These should have all been recalled by Briggs and Stratton.

There are a couple ways to defeat this compression release failure without tearing into things.On my 18.5 Briggs’ starter would not push thru the compression stroke,so I flip the hood,fill the gas,then hand roll the fan guard backwards till it hits the other side of the compression stroke.The momentum built in that 3/4 turn is able to overcome the compression,and start.You can also pop the air filter off,cover the intake tube with a rubber pad.Crank till it starts,replace filter and cover.

I’ve gotta order one and there’s a huge price difference between the OEM part and all the aftermarket kits (w/gaskets included). I called a shop today for a quote for the whole job and the guy said he uses aftermarket camshafts. After hearing his price quote I decided I’m doing it myself and I’m guessing OEM camshaft over aftermarket is the right way to go, but the OEM compression release busted off so… wondering if aftermarket vs OEM matters?

Problem with the aftermarket cams is not the compression relief mechanism,the cam lobes themselves are pressed onto the shaft,and can fail.Expert mechanics recommend spot tacking the lobes with a TIG welder so they are secure.

So one, why was this never a class action lawsuit or a recall? And two, why cant they make a better camshaft after all these years to fix the problem? Its STILL in high demand and on back order.. what a joke. Briggs use to be a great company but now Id rather buy a chinese honda clone engine.

@@Wrenchesandrods Should I avoid buying a new mower with the single cylinder Briggs?
@Wrenchesandrods

@thomasward00 Not necessarily. It all depends on what will fit your needs. Just about every engine and mower model has its weak points. You now know the weak point of this engine, and it doesn't happen to all of them. But if it does. You have an educated guess of what it might be. It's not that expensive to fix it.

@kregalis check for spark. If you have spark, check for compression. Pull your valve cover off on the dead side and make sure you didn't drop a pushrod.

Does it have a single cylinder briggs intek engine? If it does, it doesnt matter what year it is, this is a potential problem in all of them.
