@@alexx_windycitychi558 Mr. Alex, I believe this will work on any SS gun. But you still need to take a cautious approach regardless of what gun you're working on until you have some experience with a particular brand. All guns are not manufactured equally, and all gun materials are not made equally. Some manufacturers SS is harder that others. Cast SS polishes differently than forged SS. So you really need to test what grit works best on each gun. My general rule is use the least aggressive paper as possible to achieve your goals.

I actually do like mirror finishes on old S&W's and man, it is work! I average 12-16 hours on a single pistol to achieve that mirrored look. Refinishing grips is also a lot of work, and patience, as it takes several days in-between steps. People see my pistols and always ask "how much to do mine like that?" To which my response is usually that I only do it for myself:)

Big Swoll, first and foremost, god bless you for sharing your knowledge and experience with us about polishing Stainless Steel Revolvers. I learned ALOT of information I never knew. My question is when your sanding thru all the grits, is the sanding paper always wet thru the whole sanding process like you were saying when you first start? I have 3 S&W SS revolvers I’m wanting to get to a high polish/mirror finish. The model 66 I bought very cheap has alot of surface scratches and when I removed the grips it has a significant pitting line where the top of the grips meet the frame. I apologize for the long comment but this is the first video I’ve seen in days where I learned so much and am excited and MUCH more confident about scratch removal and finish.
@mr2275cur
6 ай бұрын
Thank you and no need to apologize. I' have couple of revolvers that are the same way as your 66. You not not be able to sand / polish out all of the pitting. But you will be able to make it less noticeable. Your sanding paper should be thoroughly wet before sanding, and kept wet all during the sanding process. Cut your papers into the usable sizes and write the grit on back with a marker. I soak mine for about 20-30 minutes or until the paper no longer floats before starting. That insures that the paper is thoroughly wetted. just dip it the water regularly while using it. The water keeps the surface cool nad lubricated; and flushes away loosened grit and sanding debris from the paper-to-surface interface area. It also forms a "slurry" that maximizes your polishing effort.

Last question if I may. When cleaning the brite work on my boats like T Tops, hand rails etc. We always used brass wool or scouring pads along with a cleaning fluid then a wax. It removed oxidation but left everything shinney. I liked it because it held up well. Have you ever tried that instead of sand paper? Just curious. Thanks!
@mr2275cur
6 ай бұрын
No Sir, I have not tried that. My reason for using sandpaper is to remove scratches and even out the SS finish. Brass wool is good on materials softer than brass, and for removing oxidation and embedded dirt. It will not polish SS, but will leave visible surface scratches on polished surfaces.

I have no idea, but I'd guess not much. Most of time a good polishing job doesn't detract from a guns value unless the gun was a vintage collectable gun in collector quality condition. Besides, if you're considering polishing them, you're probably not planning on selling them any time soon. Market demand and societal conditions affect gun prices more than anything else.

Great video! So with a brand new revolver (no scratches) would you use any sandpaper to achieve a bright shine or just go to the polish? I also have burn marks on the trigger also. What do you recommend for that? Thank you! 🙏
@mr2275cur
3 жыл бұрын
I've never used sandpaper on a new gun. I typically reserve that for guns with scratches that I want to remove and polish up. A new gun won't have scratches, just finishing marks. So I'd probably just polish first to see if the results will be satisfactory without wet sanding. However, I have used sandpaper on a couple that had very little scratches. In each of those cases, I started with very fine paper in the 1200 - 1500 grit range and worked up to 2500 - 3000 grit before polishing. . So if I opted to wet sand, I'd probably do the same or similar. I hope that helps.
