Put a tuned LC circuit before the gate to set desired frequency + add stability. And if you’re concerned about efficiency, you wouldn’t use a BJT in the first place, you’re loosing almost half the 1.5v at step 1. You can also add a careful amount of capacitance to the Top secondary to couple it back increasing stability. Infact you can add an inductor (an air core wound out of wire would suit) before the electrolytic capacitor to facilitate cold starts by allowing the output of the rectifier to hold back on drawing energy for a few time constants such that the primary and secondary can get oscillating together.

If no AC is present then how did you think the current got through the Transformer ? Circuit analysis 101 The Battery is DC (this part no doubt you understand) THE TRANSISTOR has 2 Basic jobs Job 1 - To act as an amplifier (Forward Gain) Job 2 - To act AS A SWITCH so What happens when you switch DC on and OFF ???? You get a square wave, which is... for all intensive purposes AC Now it is possible for the AC to pass through the transformer because DC would have just created a dead short so, After passing through the transformer as AC Square Wave it is now necessary to rectify that AC to DC again MAKE SENSE ? I suggest you learn about the STAGES OF A SWITCHED MODE POWER SUPPLY and then apply this principle in this video After the initial rectification stage What will follow is the SWITCHING STAGE Try to find a diagram that shows you the stages and the waveform you would get at each stage
