I think it's especially baffling, that nobody talks about the fact, that Disney promotes Wish as their "celebration of 100 years with a blend of 2D and 3D", while the style is like 90% 3D and the backgrounds may be 2D in some scenes (when ooking at the trailer), while Disneys history consists of around 90% of 2D animation and only 10% of 3D animation. it just feels off in a way you don't want to see the movie because of this claim and the style it ended up with :/

There should be more actual full 2D animation, not 2D-3D hybrids like Spider-Verse. It's not creative, it's stupid. Sure, it might be easier for the animators, but the Spider-Verse style makes the characters to move inconsistently : one second they either move like real life realistic people or like classic cartoons, and the next, they turn to ridiculous, incoherent lines, blurs and zigzags that cease to move with any weight, and back again. It may be "artistic" but you know what else is artistic? Awful sloshes of color and paintings of abstract nude women that hang in art galleries for billions of dollars. I personally don't like the Spider-Verse style, because now, most companies only do it because its popular, not because of artistic integrity. Seeing 2D in 3D movies makes me more annoyed more than anything. They show they can do 2D animation but decide not to because they're afraid of it "not being popular". It's like teasing a horse with a carrot and taking it away at the last second... Over and over again.

Fun fact: originally Disney was going to have it where they would make a pattern of different styles of animated films where one year they would release a 2d film, and a 3D film in the following year. This was changed when The Princess and Frog and Winnie the Pooh didn’t do so well financially. Note: I would like to note that The Princess and the Frog isn’t the last 2D animated film Disney made, it was Winnie the Pooh back in 2011. But I would like to note that the reason why both movies didn’t do well financially was because Disney didn’t do a good job marketing them, and they were both competing with other films that came out around the same time. The Princess and the Frog was competing against Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakeul and Avatar, Winnie the Pooh was competing against Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2.

I just rewatch Lilo and Stitch this morning, had fun looking at the movements and buildings; the Surf scene was adorable and entertaining, when nani sing Aloha oe to comfort her sister it was adorable. Somehow, I feel as if every single female-led Disney film has the same storyline or a variation thereof. Girl is something/wants something that goes against her family's conventions/expectations. Girl tries and fails to conform to family's standards. Girl goes on a journey of self-discovery and realises how amazing she is. Girl reconciles with her family, who realise the error of their ways and support her life choices. And while that is a great and valuable story in itself, I feel as if it has been done to death. Although i love 3D animation so much, i really miss 2D hand drawn traditional animation in movie theaters. It can do certain things, it has a magic that you can’t replicate in 3D CGI and live-action. It’s so fluid and expressive. More big budget studios should invest this to have more variety in the animation art styles. I don’t want full 3D, but I don’t full 2D neither. I want both to co-exist. I heard that Walt Disney Animation Studios will come back to traditional animation soon with Bluebeard. If that’s true, then we should really support this movie for them to know that we really miss this.

Traditional animation possesses an extremely artistic, lively quality that I’ve absolutely appreciated in my childhood. From Disney Classics between the 1920s-1990s, to Popeye, Looney Toons, and tons of other remarkable films and shows. Indeed, some modern computer generation animated films are brilliant. However, I feel as though that we should continue a Renaissance of both experimenting but also revive traditional animation. Nevertheless, this video explains many good points in regards to animation. Thanks very much, sir 🎉😊

I think there’s two main factors of this: 2D animation requires lots of time, but more importantly, in America 2D animators are unionized and thus actually paid reasonably. that’s why most if not all American 2D animated shows have maybe the storyboards and rough animation done in America, but then the rest of the production is shipped overseas and outsourced to MUCH cheaper studios in Europe or Asia- essentially, *it would be more expensive to make a 2D film than 3D with all American animators now because they would actually have to pay their workers a living wage…* if you look at recent 2D western films from smaller studios like Wolfwalkers, Klaus, and My Father’s Dragon, none of them are made by American studios for this very reason (I believe they’re all European- the UK, France, and Spain/Portugal in particular are 2D animator hotspots there). also, because American productions aren’t looking for American cleanup artists and etc because those could just be outsourced to cheaper labor, people have suggested that it might be hard finding people to do the job at all since most artists would be much more experienced in rough animation and etc instead, but not so much in the later stages though I take this possibility with a huge grain of salt- I have seen MANY extremely skilled American 2D animators all over the internet and there are undoubtedly many more to come. (3D and VFX workers don’t have a union afaik although they desperately need one, and 3D is indeed less time consuming so they spend less money for less time. although 3D animation is often outsourced to Europe and Asia too…) edit: also just look at how much of a multimillion dollar industry 2D animation is in Japan, but then also look at how horribly the workers are treated, they’re paid literal poverty wages and have overworked to the point of suicide at times. (although recently China is also becoming an animation powerhouse and actually pays their employees sufficiently, and it’s gotten so bad that Japanese animators are moving to China for work, so this isn’t any sort of excuse at all.) *TL;DR the biggest obstacle here is capitalist greed.*

The answer is simple: M O N E Y ! ! ! Chicken Little, for as horrible as it was, made more money than all of the 2D movies in the 2000s, even more than Lilo and Stitch (which WAS marketed well). Say what you will on Princess and The Frog, but Tangled made about double the amount of money. Do 1+1 and you'll realize that the casual audience prefers 3D over 2D. The same goes for DreamWorks. Their 2D movies weren't nearly as profitable as their 3D movies (regardless of quality). Unless you can guarantee to Disney making a 2D movie will bring them more money than a 3D movie you won't see another 2D movie from them. Could you imagine how disappointed Walt Disney would be in the current state of Disney? I just watched a documentary about his history and that dude was so gifted at collaboration, creating amazing creation's, finding the right people for the right things. They were TRULY DIVERSE, genuinely talented like we rarely see. Dedicated and Passionate towards creating imagination bending works of art and they Really did understand all the aspects and processes that mattered. For what it took to create those works of art. *(I just saw that Ukraine just started creating 2d animation for their military videos and it really reminded me of what I saw Walt do during WW2) I love seeing cartoon styled animated video's being used again. Just how Walt Disney did (out of his own pocket) he believed it was the least he could do for his country and his countrymen who were giving so much to the war to protect our nation and the greater good in the world. (If you think about it. Walt Disney did a lot for pushing advancements in science/creativity. He made understandable information that taught so many people of all ages, and from all sorts of different walks of life, to inform on very important matters and subjects of the time. Things that might seem out of place or difficult now, were completely relative to the current situations everyone was dealing with at that point in time. (The passion Walt gained for science and technology is what sparked his passion for Epcot and learning how to build all these cutting edge devices, city planning concepts, animatronics puppets of Abe Lincoln or the talking/signing birds in the tiki lounge. Plus all the other puppets on all the other interactions around his theme park. I just watched a documentary covering the career of Walt Disney and he really was a amazingly uniquely talented person. Where he himself had a insane drive towards innovation and new ideas BUT what I think his best trait was: That Walt was SO GOOD at interacting with everyone around him and he just had this amazing ability to find the PERFECT person for different jobs, things, roles. To really bring out the best in OTHER people around him. I truly believe that's one of the most important traits in a great leader. If anyone is in a group of people who are set on creating anything. (It's rare when someone comes across with the unique style and approach like Walt Disney had and really all it takes is to watch the coverage documentary that covers all of this uniquely awesome stuff that positively impacted SO MANY PEOPLE in so many ways and places. It didn't matter who you were, the chance that something from the Walt Disney era impacting you in a positive way is nearly 100% a possibility. There really was some of the best attributes of humanity, teamwork, and motivated passionate creativity that occured thru this group of Walt Disney era team members and we all could learn something from them. In some way or another.)

I think you're conflating story with medium. A movie isn't good because it used a certain type of animation. As long as a narrative is perfect, the movie will be good regardless of the type of animation used. For example Puss in Boots 2 or Spiderverse aren't critically praised movies because they use a different visual style, they're good movies because the stories are enthralling. I think what you're mad at is mostly the story department.

No, what I'm referring to is traditional western style animation. People want to see movies that look like Atlantis, Anastasia, The Iron Giant, or The Prince of Egypt again. But companies like Disney don't seem to get that. And, in all honesty, I don't think they will. Also, if it sounds like I'm hating on anime, trust me that's not my intention. I myeslf have been a huge fan of anime for almost two decades. But, I don't want to see just more stuff that looks like anime. Hey Aldone, this comment is not for this video but for your review of Peter Pan & Wendy! Since the comments are disabled on that video, I'm going to put my comment here, if that's OK :) So this comment is not going to be related to 2D-animation or Wish, just so you know. The film looks awful! But I noticed something else that's awfully ironic about their treatment of Hook. It's not the problem that they made Hook sympathetic. The problem is that Hook is ALREADY sympathetic in the book! He feels alone and isolated amid his crew, who are far less cultured than he is. He's musical and sensitive, but has nobody to share it with. He's secretly very self-conscious and rooted against his will in the stiff, prescriptive 19th century world he escaped from. There is a moment where he feels so sympathetic towards Peter Pan that he almost spares his life. And his last battle with Peter takes place from Hook's perspective and thereby becomes a tragic, or tragicomic, finale. So the choice to invent a new tragic backstory for him where he used to be a Lost Boy or something is just straight-up unnecessary and ridiculous and shows that they were completely apathetic towards the source material.

You had that on tv. 3D was new and exciting and so detailed you had to watch that insted. Now we see a trend of this 3D/2D hybrids come and get tons of praise and showing 3D movies now entering the dated line. The hunt for most realistic looking 3D movie ain´t that intresting to people anymore. What is the point of animation if it is gonna look live action? Now it seems like Disney will have a section working on 2D movies. But it won´t be papper, it will be computer but that is fine becuse I belive you can make 2D movies with computers so much easier now. It all depends on us, what movies to we go and watch, how are the animators getting paid and treated. We hear about 3D animation suffering for the race when both used by live action movies and animated. It seems the movie industry will just implode sooner or later. The Pandemic sadly did´t help give the animators some rest as I had hoped. The problem today is patience.

But Maleficent was 100% Disney's answer to the success of Wicked on Broadway, and nothing you say will convince me otherwise. (In fact, I think there's a good case to be made that Wicked started, or at least popularized, the pattern of redoing the plots of existing works from the villain's point of view.)

I think that's why comic books/graphic novels are so successful these days, or at least that's my perception. Because it's the old classic 2D animation, and people are becoming sick of all these 3D animation features/TV shows. Most of them look soulless and uninspired. Ironically, the more "real" (or close to reality) the animation looks thanks to 3D, the more lifeless and barren it looks to me. 3D just lacks the magic of 2D, and I don't think I'll ever change my mind about that. My favourite animated movies, those I can rewatch dozens of times without getting tired, are all 2D. Except for the Toy Story movies, I've never rewatched a 3D movie. They're just too forgettable.

Disney has been mocking 90 years of amazing traditional animated movies for over 10 years with these awful "live action" remakes, just to make a quick buck, 90 years worth of fans just spat on and constantly told get over it. great job Disney great job, dought your make 200 years heck I dought your make the next 10 years if you keep going down the path you are.

Lately it seems only individual artists are making 2D animation these days; "Lackadaisy" & "Helluva Boss" for example are incredible! And just made by small teams for youtube. Do these huge studios not see how much folks love seeing that kind of art? (Speaking of Helluva Boss- WHY are all the mainstream adult shows not in unique & pretty styles like this?! I'm so tired of the same ugly styles that adult shows have lol. when they could make it cool looking instead 🥲) Occasionally 2D movies are released (like Song of the Sea, and Wolfwalkers); which are both such gorgeously drawn movies. It's not like those big studios have to just to one medium or the other. And 3D could be done in more stylized/ unique ways like the new Puss in Boots. Hopefully with other studios getting more creative will push Disney to do the same.

I feel like they mocked and spat in the face of 2s animation with the chip n dale rescue rangers movie. A sketch and toon filter is the lazy way to make 2d. IT STILL LOOKS 3D!

Excellent video! I think we will absolutely see a renaissance of 2d animation in film... but it will take Millennials and younger generations to do it. The reason eluding you, is simply because older generations tend to believe that 2d animation is exclusively for kids. There are certainly exceptions, but for American audiences at least, 2d is "for kids" exclusively. 3d animation is like a weird grey area, where it just barely looks real enough to amuse these adults (see the outcry against Sausage Party... parents literally took their toddlers to it, because "how could an animated movie about talking food, be reserved for adults?" ). My parents cannot for the life of them, appreciate a 2d animated film in the same manner as they would the exact same film, as live-action... while they will begrudgingly tolerate 3d... but even then, it's a "kid's movie... not like a little kid... but like teenager kind of kid. In short, to answer your question... Boomer and "Me Generation" adults believe 2d animation is exclusively for kids, and won't even try to enjoy it, regardless of how mature the themes are because gasp!... what if they did?!?! that would just be childish, and I'm an Uh-dult who watches adult stuff! Yes, there are plenty of exceptions 9Simpsons, Family Guy, South Park, etc.), and I have met many older adults who love 2d film like Anime... but the reason those Disney Rennaissance 2d films did so well are because they took their kids (you and me) to see them, and our generation does not yet have kids old enough to take to the theater in mass groups.
