I played baseball in Alaska the summer of 1997. Driving back one night, I saw a car in the middle of a dirt road. I thought it had just been in an accident but there was only one car. It was an old truck, like from 1979. The man said it had just hit a moose. I looked around thinking the moose was dead somewhere. The man said, the moose crossed the road and he hit it. The moose got up and ran towards the woods. The car looked like it had been in a head on collision. That's when I knew how big a moose is and the damage it can cause.

It doesn’t make sense. There’s a video of hunters way up on a ridge with long range scopes watching this grizzly bear track this antelope for literally miles, running the entire time. I'm 74 years old and have backpacked in western Montana all my adult life without ever carrying a weapon. I have encountered many bears, and sometimes driven them off my food caches by shouting and throwing rocks. While it's obvious that an adult bear can easily kill a human, what cheechakos like you do not understand is that bears are highly intelligent creatures who regard humans as dangerous animals to be avoided. In some areas they become habituated to looking for opportunities to steal food from us, but it is a very rare bear that will push the engagement beyond that. There are exceptions of course, but they are much rarer than human on human violence. I'd be embarrassed to admit that I was afraid to camp in the forest without a firearm.
