WHY I DID NOT STOP AND LET AIR OUT?? More guys asking the same question so I’m copy pasting some of the answer: I never know beforehand how much loose sand there is. So if there is one dry section in the beginning I don’t want to stop immediately to adjust because i will lose the group instantly. By the time you realize it maybe worth it you’re so far in the race… it may not be worth it anymore Besides that, the difficult thing is, when you do that you have no way to measure what you’re doing and you risk to let out too much. You will not find out until you are riding again and the tires roll off in the corners 🤪 Also it will cost time, so you wouldn’t want to do it on the key moments where the difference is made and the lead group is established. But, yes it’s definitely an option and could work out if you are lucky If it’s not a race with a group but an individual TT or just a casual ride you can stop straight away and will be more efficient and make up the time. But in a race with a group, the benifit from riding with the group is often so big, you don’t want to lose that by stopping… same reason we don’t stop at the feed stations or stop to piss! (Last year at Bartje200 I stopped to piss after 4 hours and I never saw the guys back!🤨)

Mostly high tyre pressure but also bike :). With MTB even with the same skinnish tyres you probably had felt much better in the soft sand and wasted less energy overall. And on the hard but pumpy surface suspension bike is so so much faster and comfier. MTB with relatively narrow handlebar and 2.2 inch tyres seems to be the best choice I guess.

brilliant Jasper great footage and commentary. my thoughts are a hard trail mtb with 29/2.35 tyres would have required less effort through the terrain. the big differences I've noticed when riding aggressive mtb vs gravel bike are handle bar leverage (ability to fully commit to cornering), braking control and rapid gear selection. front suspension means less energy used. gravel bike is a compromise. weight is key my hard tail mtb is 9.5kg, my gravel bike the same. bar leverage a big factor for handling and allows more body dynamic on bike. great race you had fun dude.
@B.Mitchell
Жыл бұрын
I am curious about the gearing ratios on the MTBs as well as the general handlebar width, which is a little personal of course but with the trend to have super wide bars does it still make sense in a race situation like this. These guys are all ripping along on MTB s and gravel bikes, so aside from really great condition, how is their gear selection and bar size different than a traditional hard tail/cross country set up?
@marcus_velo_9970
Жыл бұрын
@@B.Mitchell not gear ratios, the mtb gear selection is a trigger system up on the bars compared to drop bars which have the levers on the drops, mtbs are designed for faster terrain changes so your hands are right at the triggers, where drop bars, not as accessible under fire - long movement for gear change. Wide bars, no not downhill wide, generally xc bars 700-780 mm width, well that's basic physics as more leverage gives more control, descending and dropping into corners, also allows greater body movement with the wider bar platform results in more ability to be one with terrain.

i have a suggestion to make: You should be able to measure slip by having a sensor in the front and one in the back. slip is where you lose all that power on lose ground. so you should be able to measure try out a tire on the lowest pressure or get a wider tire. my guess is that you can improve quite a lot by going to the lowest pressure on the narrow tire.

Greetings, I just came across your video. Very nice. Which bike, I really do not know. I was in this same situation. Simply harder terrain sections MTB did better and gravel/pavement roads, gravel had the edge. In the end, result would be just about the same! I attended a MTB race on my gravel bike back in september last year in Gajary, Slovakia. It was a much smaller event and shorter track, but identical scenario. The place was on flat land, same terrain, mix of dust/gravel roads going through country side, fields, forests, SAND as well, some ups/downs and long pavement roads. I was also one of very few to choose the gravel over a MTB bike. Same question, was gravel bike a better option for this race? Few days before, I went to test that rout with my XC MTB HT and gravel bikes. From the beginning I was convinced about the gravel winning this comparison, I was totally surprised when I stopped my stopwatch after the second ride, both results were the same (few seconds difference), could not believe it. For the race I chose the gravel anyway. A great part of the rout was on bumpy terrain, even if flat, it was difficult and I must admit that a MTB would do better. Then there were the long gravel and pavement roads, but did that make up for it? I do videos as well, here is the one from this mentioned race: kzitem.info/news/bejne/xZmYuqmhi4ueemU also 2021: kzitem.info/news/bejne/uWd3samjfZGpZXo not as professional and without commentary, as your videos, just so you have an idea ;)

Nothing sucks more than bad course signs, specially when the organizers keep making the same mistakes

I think you picked the right bike but like you mentioned (quite a few times 😂😂) your setup wasn't quite right! Wider tires and 100mm suspension fork with lockout and maybe a dropper post would have been perfect! MTB I'm not so sure, I guess it's what you feel best on. Dude that race was fierce!!! 100km full throttle. You Dutch guys are crazy 😂😂 The course looked really fun. Especially the technical single track in the woods. Great film Jasper. Thanks for making it. 👍

Cheers bro. A dropper post? I really don’t know when I’d use a dropper on those trails. They are too easy for that 😜 Wider tires, for sure. But that doesn’t fit the bike… so a different bike would be the solution hehe. Glad you liked the video 🤙🏻🤙🏻
