I'd advise you to spec out some tech goals when you work on features. You seem to refactor a lot :P Doesn't need to be anything massive just things you absolutely need it to do, things it would be nice if it could do and things you might want to consider doing with it in the future. e.g. With something like disk serialization I'd focus on creating a simple way to serialize basic types, then onto containers like arrays or maps then onto generic structures. With that you should be able to serialize anything in game easily without having edge cases about formats changing. You can put the role onto the specific system doing the format checking/validation but the underlying API remains the same. I'd also try to leave some space for you to reuse the same read/write code when serializing with raw binary as that's typically the next evolution for these systems
@randyprime
5 жыл бұрын
Yeah I've really only been doing programming since the start of the year. So a lot of the refactoring is just due to me learning new and more practical ways of doing things (like what you mentioned with abstracting the serialisation system out so the underlying format handles the specifics) that I wouldn't have thought of before because I had no idea how to approach the topic or have the sort of foresight that you mentioned. Thanks for the advice though - I'll put it to good use in future!
@Pokabbie
5 жыл бұрын
@@randyprime That's completely fair. In which case another recomendation I'd is to try and build an entity-component system for managing gameplay systems. Definately the popular way to build engines nowadays with good reason too. With the serialization example you'd just have to serialize every entity In a level/scene/world (These get used interchanagbly for EC :P) eg. To serialize entity A you may first add some common meta data (guid, debug name) then you'd have a list of all the components ids (Most likely just class name) and data specific to the component implementation-wise components could just have a virtual method "Serialize" that they could override to add any data they need. In order to do EC you'll most likely have to look into auto generating class factories as C++ doesn't have good runtime reflected type info unfortunately; this is so in could you could do something like: in my class factory table find class "InputComponent" and then on the returned factory you could create a new instance programatically
@randyprime
5 жыл бұрын
Yeah that sounds very interesting, I'll have to look into it one day. Not sure if I want to rework the whole structure of what I've got going on now but it seems like a pretty great concept for future projects.
