"Eyes on the side are there to hide, eyes on the front are there to hunt." I feel dumb for not knowing that but it just seems so obvious now.

I miss getting to talk about animals, I used to work at a nature center and during camps and we would educate about reptiles like snakes, turtles, and even alligators. I really loved showing the kids the different animals and answering their questions about them. My favorite part is when their parents would come to pick them up from camp and they would start going on and on about everything they learned. Educating people about animals is really rewarding and fun :)

This video was a trip down memory lane for me there was a place very much like animal wonders near were i grew [how near i do not know] that did presentations at my elementary school and it was awesome. I got to help hold [if i remember right] a boa constrictor that was so big it took i think 5 of us kids to support it's body, and i got to touch a small alligator. there were a lot of dangerous but fun animals and learning about them was amazing.

Awesome job Jessi and Augusto, I want to see some stuff about the logistics of moving and getting the animals to and from the sanctuary. Do you guys have an Animal Wonders Mobile? How stressed does a show like this make the animals? Who else is involved behind the scenes to make something like this happen? Etc...
@animalwondersmontana
9 жыл бұрын
Jay Gfeller I'm glad you asked! There is no one behind the scenes except Augusto and I and sometimes an intern or volunteer. It takes patience, observation, understanding, and training to teach an animal to be comfortable traveling and being in front of a live audience. I think our ambassadors are pretty amazing for being able to do what they do. They impress me every day. One of the reasons it can take awhile for an animal to go from being rescued to becoming a traveling ambassador is because sometimes it takes time to get them comfortable with the traveling and presenting process. We work at the animals' pace and make the crate a calm and safe place to be. Depending on the animal and how they react to the experience, sometimes the first step toward being in a show is to travel to a show and stay in the crate. That way they can hear and smell the situation before being put on the spot. The process is different for each of them because they are all individuals. But we always use positive reinforcement so they associate traveling and shows with good happy feelings. And it's a great way to enrich their lives :)

This was wonderful, letting the kids see all the animals like that! The question I have for you is how do you guys keep the animals cool in conditions like that, especially when they aren't used to the heat? Although I guess with the amount of time they've spent at Animal Wonders, they're used to it by now. And I have another question, come to think of it. Do you have to be very selective when deciding who to bring with you for presentations as to suit the audience type? Thanks Jessie and Augusto!
@animalwondersmontana
9 жыл бұрын
kirkygirl Most of the animals are good with temperatures into the high 80s and 90s. Those that aren't don't come to outside shows when it's that hot. All the animals get cold marble tiles to cool themselves, water or apple to keep them hydrated, and a/c when we get back into the car. Cold weather is harder on the tropical species, so they are always indoors when it's below 60. And yes, the selection process for each show is geared toward animals that will be most tolerant of certain situations and audience types.
