A perfect storm is brewing in the United States. Inflation, bank collapse, severe drought in the agricultural belt, recession, food shortages, diesel fuel and heating oil shortages, baby formula shortages, available automobile shortages and prices, the price of living place. It's all coming together and it could lead to a real disaster towards the end of this year (or sooner). With inflation currently at about 6%, my primary concern is how to maximize my savings/retirement fund of about $300k which has been sitting duck since forever with zero to no gains.

Why is the yield curve inverted? It's because interest rates were low for so long that people gave up taking a risk and starting a business for taking on the risk of owning a highly leveraged home. Low interest rates are a direct cause of mortgage inflation. 346k mortgage@8%=600k@3%. Home prices get to go up because money is cheaper to borrow leading to a fake wealth effect causing people to spend money they don't have because the asset isn't actually worth what people are paying for it. Satoshi Nakamoto was for getting rid of the central bank, not asking it to lower interest rates to keep the ponzi going.

The answer is to encourage production. Replace all income taxes with a progressive consumption tax. At least replace the payroll tax with a national sales tax. The way to eliminate inflation is to first top printing new money. That is a requirement. Second is to encourage production. Do not punish work and production. Also loans can be indexed to a basket of goods. If the basket of goods and services goes down in value, then the loan should go down. If they go up, then the loan principle should go up. I agree of his assessment of what is wrong with the trajectory and the symptoms. The economy in most develop countries are only able to grow by increase debt both government and household and population growth, this problem started in the 1980s. We have a similar problem in Australia, our government knows this and we've kicked the bucket down the road so long now that the moment we try to fix this there will be a collapse - So the government kicks the bucket further down the road by a massive increase in migration that makes it appear as if the economy is still growing, which creates a hosing shortage, renting crisis living standards continue to slide for the majority of the society. We are stuffed no matter what we do now.

The rating agencies essentially stamp AAA on all govt bonds because the last time the S&P tried to downgrade US govt bonds, the CEO of S&P was fired the next week. That was in 2012 and since then, no rating agency dare downgrade the US. So don't expect rating agencies to be reporting the quality of bonds. Just like pre-2008, mortgage backed securities were stamped AAA by these same agencies which turned out to be sub-prime mortgage junk.

Exactly. The Bond Market is everything. The 10 year is especially important, not the 2 and not the 30. This is where the big boys and girls play. It is where money for buisness and real estate is lent out at. IMHO I think the 10 year keeps going up even if the Fed cuts. Why? There is too much risk now to lend buisness and real estate money. This is called a bull steepener. And while it sounds good (bullish) it is not a good thing. Folks talk about the yield curve reinverting but they don't talk about how it reinverts. It matters and the Bond Market is everything. Government does not control this even though they have brainwashed everyone to think they do. The implications of the 10 year staying high and or going higher (I think at least 12%) is devisating. Folks don't understand that yet, but they will.

Don't forget what happened in the 70's with Arthur Burns who lowered rates too soon and inflation returned. I don't think that Powell wants to repeat the Burns blunder. In my view lowering interest rates close to zero has been the problem for many years. This cheap money has resulted in inflation in the housing market and also juiced the financial markets. We are like junkies who need their low interest rate fix. I think lowering rates would be like giving a drug addict more of the drug they are addicted to. Rehab in the way of raising interest rates or keeping rates higher for longer is probably the best way to ween us off this this addiction. At 5% interest rates are close to average over the last 50 years.

Real stability in the economy happens when the people have faith that they control their own financial destiny. Lower taxes and people will use their own money. In inflation people do not save, they don’t pay down debt. They see their money value go down every day. They use their credit to make ordinary purchases that would normally be paid from earnings if inflation was low. Do they take financial risks? No! Because whether or not they know economics they sense that most of the money available is via government spending. That can change without notice. Remember taxes are a form of forced spending.

Canada’s financial driver is it’s energy, and the US as well. In fact the commodities and natural resources of any country give it it’s economic strength. Foolish government policies of immediate elimination of gas and oil production damages the gross domestic production in all associated industries and the viability of the population of being prosperous. Principally the very cost to the individual to even work. Travel to and from work, the cost of away from home foods and clothing needs takes a steep increase. Less government means better economic times.
