My Great Uncle was a Beaufighter Pilot ( Rank Sgt P/O A ) for both RAAF 463 Sqd and RAF 108 Sqd in the North African campaign - one of 4 Australians in a Unit ... 108 flew Night Fighter patrols over Egypt, Libya, Malta, Greece and the Aegean generally. His personal file shows the destruction of Ships, Trains, motor vehicles and a Heinkel HE. 111 among other victims. Through 1943-44, flying out of an airfield in Athens - after the HE. 111 was intercepted and destroyed - records state his Beau harassed a German retreat by strafing Railway and Motor Transport following this up with nightly 'Intruder Missions' over the wider Aegean ( Salonika, Crete, Rhodes, Melos, Leros and Cos ). Must have been one hell of a show. He lived well into his 90's and only recently passed away. Gods bless them all!

As a kid I loved hearing stories from my Grandad, who was a navigator with RAF 29 squadron operating Beaufighter's and later Mosquito's as night fighters. One night with his pilot (Dambuster legend Guy Gibson) while trying to shoot down a German bomber his guns jammed so he climbed out of the seat and manually cleared the jam so they could continue to fire, eventually shooting down the bomber. My Grandad, Sgt. R. H. James was awarded the DFM. He went deaf though (from the guns) and also suffered from stomach ulcers in later life. He was quite strict with me so when he showed me a picture of a beautiful chandelier light fixture at the country house where they were billeted at West Malling in Kent, I was quite surprised when he said, 'We used to swing on that!' He passed away in 2005 aged 92 and whenever I visit England I always run my fingers across his name and mine at The Battle of Britain Monument in London.

Sir Patrick Pictures thanks for sharing. My uncle was a ball turret gunner. He got lucky as they shipped him to Europe in late 44. I once ask him what he remembers most about it. He replied the lack of targets. Not much German air power on the west front in 44-45. He was really a great guy always the black sheep of the family. Before he died he passed that title on to me. We are losing our WWII vets quickly when we need them most to remind us what the war was all about. Never forget or we will have to fight it all over again. I fear that the meaning of that simple statement is lost on our commander in chief.

Please (if you're serious and not sarcastic). The battles in the air were nowhere near a hell compared to those on the ground. Pilots had a good chance of survival and could always parachute. If they were captured they were treated well. Soldiers on the ground slept in cold trenches, froze, had to eat whatever they found and had to endure months of shelling with nowhere to hide. On top of that they had to look whoever they killed in the eye at close combat and saw their friends be wounded and killed right in front of their eyes.

I painted the interior areas, that would be visible through the windows....I had the wings attached, and the interior pieces glued into one side of the airframe.....everything ready for final assembly.... The Florida heat....had actually warped the airframe...nothing I could do would get the tabs to fit in their respective homes....lol

One of the island residents who had been there during the War, Gerry Blitner - now gone - told me of watching Beaufighters taking off from that strip and what a hair-raising performance it could be at times. I love the way that the writer, whom I presume is also the anonimous "voice over" for this propaganda film, effectively uses comedy and humor as a weapon against the Nazis and by the time 1:03 scores a "direct hit" right at the center-point "bullseye" of enemy-target that is Herman Goering's big fat b......luftwaffe! ... From "One Voice" speaking for "my generation" standing in awe of One from " The Greatest": ...I Thank you for your service, Sir... whoever you are ... where ever you are

+Halabira Lapu-Lapu. Your misspelling of anon"y"mous was an abomination ... apart from that, I haven't a clue as to the meaning of your comment. A very bad post, ergo, you lose five points ... watch out.

I believe Beaufighters got the sad duty of destroying the liner Rex before the Germans could use it as a blockship.

Quite surprised they're giving out the specs in a newsreel. Assuming they're accurate, I'd have thought that was classified.

Noticed that. It was probably an exaggeration. These things had to pass the censors before release.
