I had a very similar situation a few weeks ago. An LED display said "don't overtake", and the police car was swerving over the three lanes. There was some debris on the Autobahn, the police got out, removed it, drove to the side, and switched their lights off. Pretty efficient. Usually, there is a good reason for the police to block traffic, and ignoring it might cause danger or make you stick in a full road block for several hours. The biker will probably get a ticket based on his registration plate.

Because that's exactly why the officer approached him, to point it out to him and explain to him that it is a measure precisely to protect motorcyclists. The police car will usually have a sign in the back window telling people not to overtake. Following the police's orders also is a result of the fact that in most cases, you know that police work is actually something you want. Today in Nature, we observe a fascinating creature: the German police car. This remarkable animal holds a prestigious position in the hierarchy of German vehicles. When the German police car begins to swerve its rear, it sends a signal that all other German cars instinctively understand. Immediately, they pay close attention and fall into formation behind it. Together, they embark on their migratory journey along the A81 towards the south, where they find fuel-rich stations. There, they settle for the winter and engage in their mating rituals.

i suggest the red car is from the "Straßenmeisterei" which is some kind of company responsible for cutting grass and trees and replacing old signs or repairing smaller damages where no complete construction site is needed. And it is very likely that it's the other way around - the police may be called to secure the workplace as the Straßenmeisterei may not be allowed to stop the traffic on its own. For this they ask the Autobahnpolizei (seperate police that is not from a city but for the autobahn itself).

9:55 Its actually allowed for bike drivers to use the emergency lane to pass the traffic jam (if it completely stops) Bikers are known for having thick protective clothes on even in summer. They are allowed to pass because they dont have an air conditioner like cars do. The idea behind this is that the air flow keeps them cool. It keeps them safe from overheating and eventually passing out on the road in summer. Neither the less, if you reach the front of the traffic jam, you have to stop too (and eventually take some clothes off)

the fact that mostly everyone follows the rules (if really needed) is why on the other side motorways without speedlimits are possible. everyone knows how to react if there is some accident / some ambulance-car etc. and in germany we learn at driving school always reckon with the stupidity of others - so we have all cars around us always in view (especially on the autobahn I look every few seconds in the mirrors... I always know what cars are around me...), we have the TüV that checks every 2 years that your car is good enough to drive it safely. the drivers license is expensive and if you don't follow the rules too often you may loose it... So that mix of extreme freedom but also hard regulations works really fine. I remember a TV-commercial in the 1990s ore maybe early 2000s... but I think 90s... where a driver had really loud music in car, did not recognize that there was an ambulance the whole time behind him without a chance to overtake and when he came to his destination (maybe home?) the people he wanted to visit (or was it one of his family? I don't remember in detail...) had an accident and died because the ambulance was too late. And then the conclusion: always take care on ambulance cars, build a rescue lane, etc - because there may be a time when it is your family or friends that needs that help... I really had some situations on autobahn where I had to do emergency-breaks to not have an accident with another car that didn't see me (of course I did this after I knew there was no one close behind me that may crash into my car... but that are reactions in fractions of seconds, thanks to good training...) And I also had a situation where I came over a hilltop on autobahn, heavy traffic, but without congestion maybe 110 or 120 km/h, the sun tickled my nose, I had to sneeze, maybe one or a half second eyes not on track and when I looked back on track (directly on the hilltop) I only saw red brake lights... In this moment I had no time to look how to react... I just did know "I just overtook an truck... in front of the truck there were only faster cars... so there had to be space...", I switched on the right lane, came in front of that truck, stepped on my brake and overtook 2 standing cars on my left... so that microsecond when I thought about what HAS TO BE on my right side, because I had all cars in view before sneezing, saved my life and maybe the life of others... In Germany I know many drivers that always try to have that overview all the time and when enough people take care in this way, they can evade if anyone else made a mistake or has a real problem (I also heard about people that saw that another driver had something like a heart-attack and set their car in front of the other and took risk of getting harmed by brake down the other car with their own car...)

the sverving is, so that the vehicles on all the lines know that they can't go further and need to stay behind the police car :) also... if there is a traffic jam you're allowed to sverve slowly, so others from behind you go on there brakes and know that they need to stop or go very slow, because of the upcoming jam. but you always need to put on your emergency blinkers before doing that... and it also is okay to JUST put those on and not sverve..it's to help the other drivers behind you :) also, they opened there doors, so the drivers behind them knew that they will stop in the next few meters and could preper for stopping themself. :) looks like the vehicle blew a tire and he also filmed the medics, because they will come to help the driver with the blown tire, if he's in pain or something ('cause it looks like he ditched the vehicles and that could mean he got injured). They really did an awesome job, 'cause they went out and picked everything by hand, so nobody else got injured... I'm sure they wrote down the number plate of the motorcycle and contacted them afterwards or... and that's more likely they allowed him drive down, but to be carefull and look for any debruis, so he won't damage his vehicle or injure himself.

how this is done: police drives on leftmost fast-lane and slows down. only police is allowed to do that. anyone dumb enough to overtake that police car risks his driving license. no one is allowed to overtake on a left lane. this is a simple rule. the big red car may be directly involved with police, or road maintenance, or smart enough to assist early. police may then drive half between 2 lanes and slow down further. middle lane has the advantage of being able to see more in rear mirrors, which is done at slower speeds. we only see the end of a longer process here. when slow enough, open doors mark a serious emergency, and it indicates that police will walk on the highway.

Most of the times the police has some kind of LED sign that shows something like "folgen" (Follow) or something similar... If they don't have this they go in front of the cars and put their warning lights/blinkers on and sometimes they make some hand gestures or open their doors (but maybe they do this to find the thing they are looking for - like animals or things on the road). In my opinion motorcycles should be allowed to overtake on the emergency lane during a traffic jam. Especially during the summer. You can't compare sitting in your car with AC for 30min to sitting on your bike in full gear for 30min. Also bikers can easily get out of the way if they have to. That same guy would probably call the police if I mowed my lawn on a sunday. I am a motorbiker and I did illegally bypass traffic jams on such hot summer days, because stop and go might have cooked my air cooled engine and was cooking me in protective clothing. This idiot however did not break the rules correctly, much too fast, endangering others and not checking for emergency vehicle's lights. He will pay for this alright.

Traffic jams are not for motorcycles. When you keep standing it can get too hot sitting on the warm engine and with the motorcycle clothing and helmet, plus the warm fumes from the cars around you. You have the option to carefully pass the cars in a traffic jam with your bike because youre smaller than them, so its normal to use it and to first carefully get in the front and there find out what happend and why traffic stopped. The other option would be to stop and start sweating in your clothes and helmet, all the cardrivers chilling with the AC, meanwhile you are breathing in their exhaust fumes and getting hot, that helps nobody if motorcyclists collapse from heat and then also need an ambulance OR traffic flows again and then because you were so noble and waited with them, then youre feeling bad from the heat and then you have to drive under that condition.... compleatly unnecessary, as a biker its important to make sure that you get fresh air and you do that with driving, so that the air can get in your clothes openings and helmet. i would also carefully drive to the front of the traffic jam, there you can find out what happend and if there is a danger for you or others when you keep driving, or of its safe to drive. In this case it seems like he was informed by the police about it but probably still was told not to drive and then decided himself that he rather keeps driving. I dont know what the exact situation was, but the concept of filtering, that you as a biker carefully pass the cars in a traffic jam is compleatly normal, even my driving teacher told me that he does this, the cars are standing, thats their problem and they have AC, you need to mind your own business and make sure that you get fresh air and dont overheat, instead of overheating and then when traffic continues you are the weakest part of traffic again and have to drive while feeling bad, you cant afford that... or even worse, to collapse from heat. But of course people tend to connect bikers with danger and troublemakers... 99% percent of time cars are bigger, better protected, etc... here is the one time where its actually an advantage to be the smaller one, i think car drivers should be able to accept that.
@njordholm
3 ай бұрын
No, I am not able to accept that and it is also not completely normal because a lot of bikers do it. The right shoulder is for emergencies only not for passing others. It's forbidden. Period Your driving teacher may have the wrong job if s/he can't teach you the rules correctly and openly admits not following the rules by his-/herself. "you need to mind your own business and make sure that you get fresh air and dont overheat" Of course! If it gets too hot causing a blackout, the biker has an emergency and is allowed to stop on the right shoulder. He can get off the motorcycle, climb over the guardrail for his safety and take his biker clothes off for better ventilation. In a traffic jam, bikers can overtake on the left, if there is enough space to the other vehicles in the same lane. Driving between 2 lanes and/or in the rescue lane (even worse) is also not OK! In and of itself this is very easy to understand and should be acceptable for every road user.

Not true. Only about half of all motorbikers are idiots, slightly more than in the rest of the population, and only 10% are complete idiots like this guy. Otherwise we would have way more motorcycle accidents.

My opinion: The biker acts just as almost any other biker in Germany would act: Don't care about traffic jams and drive through any gap you can find and show the stupid car drivers how much better it is be on a bike. The police officers wouldn't have the time to punish the biker because they have much more important things to at that moment. The officer probably asked the biker: "Do you promise that you will never do this again?" And the biker would answer in his most regretting voice: "Yes, I promise that I will never EVER do this again." Then the officer said: "In that case I will let you go on with any punishment today." And then the biker will do it again next time he comes to a traffic jam.

Well, the police might let it slide that the biker used the shoulder to bypass the backed up traffic, but not the bike continuing on despite everybody else waiting patiently.

You know how hot it can be when you are wearing Winter clothing and a helmet and cloves and winter shoes aka Protection clothing - all air-cooled when standing still for some minutes in the summer heat? That's why it is mostly accepted by the police - when it is hot and sunny - (as long as you do it slow and safe as possible) that motorbikes drive on the emergency lane to avoid a heatstroke.

@@DSP16569 There is lane splitting or filtering, to which using the shoulder could be counted. And there is driving across an obviously blocked off area. I am not discounting the heat argument, but once you get to a complete standstill (and there is a shoulder), you can get off your bike and take off some of your clothing including the helmet. Sure, when it is hot enough that can still be uncomfortable without shade but the police is also outside without shade.

Police cars have LED signs telling you what to do, like when you get pulled over it says "follow please" and in this case it says "don't overtake" and to be fair the guy getting out of the vehicle is not following the rules either, it's forbidden to walk on the autobahn

If you are in a traffic jam with a complete stop for maybe 10 minutes, sometimes people do get out. But this can still be dangerous if a motorbike is cutting through traffic at a high enough speed.

@@aphextwin5712 I was stucked in a full closure at the A3 near Frankfurt (a Audi tried to kick a Lorry from the road (runs under the Lorry and the trailer felt to the side at "full speed" blocking all Lanes with his load)) for about 6 hours at a Summer day with 35-40°C. Yes we left the car because the engine was shut down (no AC) and it got terrible hot in the Cars. For hours the local voluntary fire department send cars with Water Bottles to "Patrol" the Traffic Jam.

@@DSP16569 yes it's usually not enforced in a full stop traffic blockade, but it's technically still not allowed then.

@DSP16569 I had a similar experience on the A5 near Frankfurt. 5 hours road block. Red Cross was distributing water bottles, and some local farmers sold freshly harvested strawberries. When traffic resumed, some cars had drained their starter batteries, and we had to push them to get them going. In my EV, I had full air-condition the whole time and only lost 7% of battery charge.

@@Bioshyn The risk of motorbikes filtering through should drop massively once traffic has been at a standstill for a while since that usually will mean, traffic is backed up to the nearest exit or interchange and most of not all vehicles will take a detour around the blocked section.
