The word mammal comes from mammary (milk producing glands). Whales, seals and dolphins are nursed by their mothers. Horses, donkeys, mules and zebras are equines. The term for different types of horses is breed, just as breeds of dogs.

Absolutely right, and most of the state is rural. When I was in elementary school we lived in Poughkeepsie. We lived miles out of the city and I rode the bus to school everyday. I can't tell you how many apple orchards and cattle farms we passed on our route to school. As an adult I worked for a year in Endicott, in western NY nearer to the Grea Lakes. Beautiful area, super nice people.

The reason why we, in Connecticut, adopted the sperm whale as our State mammal was that, throughout the 19th-century, the Northeast States of Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and, to a lesser extent, Maine and even New Jersey were major whaling centers, and whale oil was highly valued as a fuel source, primarily for both interior and exterior lanterns, as well as for many other purposes. That practice was, of course, eventually ceased, and the thousands of sperm whales who live(d) all along the Connecticut shoreline through Long Island Sound were allowed to live and thrive, and their numbers rebounded. You will see the 'whale tail' used as part of many logos across Connecticut, both private and municipal, as well as the official mascot of the West Hartford Children's Science Center, as an example. And much more. At one time, the capital of Connecticut, Hartford, hosted a professional hockey team named The Whalers. Adopting the sperm whale as our official mammal was an act of redemption, to turn-around a rather not-so-glorious piece of our history.

Having a “state mammal”, it needs to be officially voted upon by the state legislature. A lot of them were voted upon during simpler times where they were looking for things to do. Nowadays, it’s not much a priority. They’re usually chosen, as you can imagine, because of some significance to the state- largest predator, high population, commercial significance (Connecticut used to have a massive whaling industry, which has changed to education and conservation), etc. One I’m surprised about is Minnesota, known as “The Gopher State”, doesn’t have a state mammal, like… the gopher…?

To get something adopted as an official state anything, it usually takes a lobbying campaign by some group. Judging by the mammals selected, there seem to be a variety of criteria. 1) It occurs only in that state, or is associated with that state. 2) It is endangered and some conservation group gets it adopted to encourage state funding. 3) Some group thinks the mammal is really badass or cute. 4) The common adoption of white-tailed deer makes me think a hunters lobby is encouraging adoption and thus more funding for deer population management.

The Bison vs Moose collision question... The Bison wins and deletes or seriously hurts the moose. Buffalo are big, and they're like semi-trucks (lorries?) when they charge. Moose are strong and tough, but that bisons head is a massive battering ram with a giganticly thick muscular neck powering it

I was born and raised in Pennsylvania, spent my first 30 years there and visit very often over the last 30 years and i do believe they under estimate the number of white-tailed deer there are in the state....1,500,000. I swear it feels like that is just the road kill count. I have personally seen herds as large as a few hundred at a time feeding in the alfalfa and corn fields. I spent many nights with friends riding around at night spotlighting deer and the visual of that many glowing eyes staring back at you is pretty crazy. The only thing ive seen wilder is a hundred or so alligators in a lake at night, their eyes appear red when hit with a light. Imagine seeing hundreds of red eyes staring at you in the dark.

Luka, moose are also known to have a short temper. CO's contribution--Rocky Mtn. Bighorn--is 1 of 4 cousins--this one all across the US Rockies; Stone Sheep in the Canadian Rockies, Desert Bighorn in the SW, and in Alaska it's the Dall sheep. You may recognize them as being the males which bang heads together during the rut (mating) season. The Florida is really being threatened by the invasive species, the Burmese python, as are lots of other animals. Just like whales, dolphins aren't fish, since they breathe air through their blowhole on top of their heads. Mules are the product of a mixed marriage 😀 between a horse and a donkey. Remember, re. NY's beaver, that only 1% of NY State is NY City. Thus, there's plenty of room for rural areas. Back in 1980, for example, the Winter Olympics was held in the tiny town of Lake Placid (think Miracle on Ice), and there's also Niagara Falls in the state. WA's marmot is only found in high altitudes in the mtns.

City of New York? About what are you talking? New York is the STATE in which New York CITY is located. New York State is so large, it could fit Switzerland, Belgium, The Netherlands and Luxembourg inside of it with room to spare. In fact, you could fit half of the U.K. into New York State. New York State also has a powerhouse economy larger than that of South Korea, at $2.189 TRILLION dollars, by GDP. If New York State were a separate country, it would be the 10th largest economy in the world. The capital of New York is Albany. New York State is a beautiful, green, spacious State, with natural beauty abound. As far as the rodents in New York City, remember that much of Manhattan is below sea level, as well as the subway system (built below the water-level....) It is a constant battle of City versus pests. Sometimes, the pests run afoul . . . Below is a link to an introductory video on New York State. The video is only two minutes, but it will take your breath away. (We vacation in Lake George, Upstate New York frequently.)
