It is true, in his prime JJ Watt was something like Reggie White, or how Aaron Donald is now with the LA Rams. One of the most dominant D linemen EVER for a few years there. He's past his prime now but given a chance with a good team I'd bet he can summon a few of those ghosts from when he was sacking guys 20 times a year. Gronkowski might be the best Tight End ever but he wasn't the same sort of dominating force as JJ Watt, in part because a tight end is in large part a contingent position, they can't take over a game like a D lineman can, though Gronk is a great blocker in his own right

To answer your question when he scored the touchdown off a pass from the QB, sometimes they would put JJ in as a tight end. He has some experience from high school and maybe college. Watt is an excellent example of the frightening athleticism in elite NFL players. He's a giant of a man, freakishly strong, and could probably run a sub 11 second 100m. He also has exceptional balance, agility, and hand-eye coordination. You are correct - defensive ends do not typically score touchdowns. When they do, it's generally a return of a recovered fumble or interception - what you might call a counter attack in association football or rugby. Some exceptional defensive players are, at times, pressed into service on the offensive side of the ball. If they are exceptionally large, they might serve as blockers, or run the ball themselves in cases where only a short gain is necessary to score or extend a drive. Watt was used, in the examples of this film, as a tight end/H back. He's quick and athletic enough to run receiving patterns and catch the ball in crowded space. Injuries have unfortunately plagued his career. If not for multiple trips to the surgeon's table, he would have certainly been an Hall of Fame player. Some believe he's done enough as it stands.
@kabirconsiders
3 жыл бұрын
Even compared to rugby, American football really seems a sport of high attrition. That's now 3 players that I've reacted to (Watt, Bo & Sanders), and Gronk to a lesser extent, whose careers have been impacted by injuries. I've noticed that a common denominator between those three is freakish athleticism. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems that it's rare for a supremely athletic football player to have a relatively (serious) injury-free career, or have their career cut short?
@kentgrady9226
3 жыл бұрын
@@kabirconsiders No, you're not mistaken. Athletes with exceptional talent do tend to suffer more injuries and have shorter careers. Part of the problem is overuse. An exceptional runner may have more carries, and/or be called upon more often in intensely competitive stages of a season or individual game. More touches of the ball make for more opportunities to get hurt. Interior players like Watt tend to suffer more injuries simply because they are effectively engaged in hand-to-hand combat on every play. Many times, it's not real contact doing the damage. Rather, it's a knee or an ankle or an elbow getting tangled in a pile of huge, violent men. The next video you watch, pay attention to the equipment worn by offensive linemen. Most of them wear braces on both knees in order to minimize twisting. They resemble the sort of mechanism a doctor might prescribe to a patient recovering from an ACL injury. Although, they're often overlooked, offensive linemen are remarkable athletes in their own right. They are *mountains* - often near 2 meters tall and approaching 150kg in weight. They operate in the most congested part of the field and the technique required to play the position is intricate. The balance, agility, and coordination required are considerable. They're also often the most intelligent players - perhaps after quarterbacks. Finally - raw athleticism has a pretty short shelf life. The harsh reality is that a 23 year old can perform at a higher pure level than a 28 year old. Even if the difference is nigh imperceptible, that fraction of a step makes a big difference. A player named Gale Sayers was a famous example of an injury shortened career. Sayers played in the 1960's and was breathtaking to watch in the open field. Balletic, is a fine description. But, he was injured fairly early in his career. I don't believe he played more than 60 or so games before his body betrayed him. He's still considered to be one of the best ever, and is enshrined in the Hall of Fame. There was a famous film, covering Sayers's relationship with his back up/best friend/roommate, Brian Piccolo. Their relationship took root at a time of great racial strife in America. Sayers was black, Piccolo was white. Piccolo died of leukemia at a young age, roughly as Sayers's career was ending. The film was called "Brian's Song". I recommend it. Be warned, you may shed a tear or two. It's that kind of film.
@kabirconsiders

@@kentgrady9226 Man, I don't know if I have it in me to watch "Brians's Song", this current situation we find ourselves in is depressing enough. Your post makes perfect sense. If you have a player that you know is special, you are going to use them as much as you can, and probably build your team around them. That's great for the prospects of the team, but not necessarily for the players' longevity. It reminds me of that quote, "the flame that burns twice as bright burns half as long."

@@kabirconsiders You're probably right. Amongst macho American sport fans, "Brian's Song" is widely considered to be one of the few films during which it is not only acceptable, but nearly mandatory to cry. Given the depressing nature of 2020, perhaps that movie can wait until the pharmaceutical companies put the vaccine in the veins of every man, woman, and child on the planet. Side note: my own personal 2020 started last November. 18 November, 2019, I survived a serious, unexpected heart attack. Less than a year previous, I had received a completely clean bill of health - then, poof - 99% blockage of the Left Anterior Descending artery. Whilst recovering, we discovered our home had a bedbug infestation. Happy f*cking holidays. And I thought 4 years of Donald Trump were bad (thoroughly humiliating, is more like it). Oh well.
