I open carry when I'm riding my bike. Now I live in a county of about 18,000-20,000 people in rural North Carolina. We have Bears, Bobcats, Coyotes, and even Mountain Lions have been seen here. So you best believe that my 9mm is always loaded with 17 rounds and strapped to my hip. When I go check my trail cameras, I take my semi auto shotgun loaded with Brenneke style slugs with me because when you are unarmed, that's when trouble comes looking for you, and I ain't fixin to be some critters dinner.

Yes. That's a great point that many in other countries don't consider when thinking about our use of guns here in the US. Protection from dangerous and predatory animals is very important in many states. We have wolves, coyotes, bears, moose, bobcats, and mountain lions here in WI, especially Northern WI. So important to have a gun for protection.

That is so true. I'm around central WI and bounce between there and the UP. And it's common knowledge that you carry some type of firearm when you go out beyond the cities. I've heard stories of people just walking their dogs or collecting firewood and next thing they know they are surrounded by a pack of wolves. There's the predators but also too you can't really underestimate the moose or deers even.

2 things on the gun front that aren’t controversial. The beginning of America did not have the food supply industry that the British already had after gaining independence. Hunting and gathering is how people lived. That has continued and still exists today for many people. I’m 30 but even as recently as my great grandparents hunted for food because they could not afford to go to the store and buy meat. The second thing is just what America was founded on. It’s a free nation. That means the government is in place to maintain that exact thing. They aren’t there to tell you how to live your life. The second amendment or right to bare arms is specifically in the constitution for citizens to have the right to protect themselves from a corrupt government if it were to ever happen. That’s literally why it’s there. And with what we got going on here now days….. I just believe everyone should at least know how to use one. Just sayin. Again, not controversial. When you grow up around guns you recognize they aren’t scary and are just a tool or a hobby. Bad people are what’s scary. And we have wayyy too many today

We are not all enamored of guns. While we don’t even see them on the police since we are used to it, many of us don’t like guns and not all of us carry or keep them in our home. Certain states, there is a history of families with a tradition of carrying guns and teaching young kids about guns and at a certain age getting them familiarized with the gun. Certainly that’s foreign to many other of us. To each their own. Good to know we are friendly but as to getting right to the point, many of us do use tact in our conversations. Some of us actually like the reserved way of handling things. Again, to each their own.

Christ, the store made her sign all kinds of things, they took her driver's license. She went through, I think it was four days of background checks before she could even buy it. It's hard even for many Americans to understand, but the US was founded on ideas of Natural Law. When it comes to guns, understand that when it all boils down, you are the one that is responsible for your own safety. We create institutions like government and police to try provide some saftey, but in a moment of danger, it is on you. The job of the police is really more to deal with the aftermath of crime. In the US, you are supposed to be responsible for yourself, and it is an act of responsibility to own and carry a firearm so that you are able to protect yourself and your loved ones, perhaps even your community, if the necessity should arise. People just need to realize that Americans carry firearms because they are dutiful and responsible citizens.

The south & central Americans whine about the "America" in our name, but we are the only country with "America" in the official name. And no other people in the Americas were referred to as Americans, only us. And there's another country in the Americas with United States in It's name. But we are the ONLY ones called Americans. So the other haters in Latin & South America who don't think we should call ourselves & be referred to as "Americans" can go suck it. We find any suggestion otherwise as offensive. Great reaction again. Now to understand why Americans love guns, you must understand that although we are proud to be Americans, we do not trust any government. We were brought up studying our Constitution and the first 10 Amendments to the Constitution. We love our Constitution, we do not love our government. The first 10 Amendments are our Bill of Rights. We have the right to free speech, the right of freedom of religion, and among these rights is the right to bear arms. Our pride in our flag, our National Anthem, and in our country boils down to our pride in our Constitution. It was the first document in history that gave people the right to rule themselves (at least that is what is common knowledge). Any attempt to diminish any of these rights, we view as an attempt to overthrow our Constitution. America was built with guns, first with settlers defending their homes, then against Great Britain, Mexico, and Spain. We were a rural society where most of the population hunted for food until shortly after World War II. Although I grew up around guns, I did not own one until a few years ago. The first thing I did was to take a safety class at a local range. I think most Americans who own guns, take classes at a range, or were taught by their parents who had hunted since they were young. Gun ranges have strict safety rules and all participants are watched closely for any unsafe handling. I hope this gives you a better understanding of the American gun culture.

I am: a) from Texas (Katy, just outside Houston), b) currently living in Canada, and c) a professional historian. So as an historian, I really think that a lot of the differences between US culture and that of the UK (and many of their other former colonies, including Canada) is based around the fact that the US is one of, if not the only, former British colony to gain their independence through war, rather than diplomacy. This is often cited when people arguing for gun rights, as in "what would we have done to fight off the TYRANNY of King George III if we hadn't all had guns?" And that's often the argument still today - essentially, we need our guns in case the government gets out of control and needs to be overthrown. Also, with the fact that the US is so big, you can often find yourself 100+ miles from even the nearest small town in this country and the wildlife in such places can be vicious - ergo, a gun to protect yourself from such dangers.

At the end of the course, they brought rifles and shotguns to the school, and we shot skeets. At this time, I own a rifle. I have used it. We have a lot of venomous snakes here. As an American who lives near a Canadian border, you’ll never hear a Canadian refer to themselves as American even though they are from the North American continent. The same is true for South American, people would just say I’m from Mexico or Puerto Rico, and etc. So if you’re from Europe and you meet someone that says they’re American, it’s a safe bet that they mean they’re from the U.S.A. Also another thing about guns about going to shooting ranges is if you're not terrified of them, you'll probably walk away loving the experience. Because when you get that equalizing power in your hand to reach out and touch something that's up to a Mile away with just the pull of a trigger, you start to feel something. I called it an equalizer, because a gun in the hand of the smallest person, for females especially, suddenly makes them as strong as the biggest dude or wild animal out there. We often applaud it when a woman who's packing a gun in her purse is able to take out an aggressor without anybody else getting hurt. There's this viral video of a woman doing just that in the front of one of those covered walkways in the front of a building. The dude was assaulting somebody and the lady pulled out her gun and shot the assailant dead. And she was not charged. Video clearly showed that it was a justified self-defense case.

Don’t build up fear of guns in your head. If you get the chance to shoot at a gun range, just follow the safety rules and relax. It’s a fabulous experience.

Most of *actual* gun culture is primarily about safety and responsibility. Most of our movies tend to get made by anti-gun people in California.

I think the gun-culture here in America is different from home to home. Some families have multiple firearms in their possession while other don't and never have had. I mysef have a couple of BB guns which I never take out and shoot....but I enjoy target shooting if the opportunity comes up. Years ago my husband and I would frequently go out into the hills and target shoot with our black powdered rifle and that was fun. Every household is different no matter what state you live in. ( except maybe Alaska in the bush where every household has a weapon of some kind)

I live in a state with open carry or conceal carry without a permit. I carry all the time. The area I live in has Mountain Lions, Bears, Lynx, Bobcats, Rattlesnakes, Moose, Badgers and many other types of animals, so it's just good to have in the event you need it.

I'm glad that he made the distinction of the U.S. to other Americans, because while America is most commonly thought of as the U.S.A., technically we aren't the only ones. Canadians (North Americans) , Mexicans (Central Americans), and South Americans... (South Americans). America is four connected countries divided by their distance from the equator.

I always enjoy your videos and this one was no exception. For perspective Scotland England and Wales fit inside North Carolina alone. And it's pronounced App-uh-latch-an. The North argues with us about it, but I can prove it. I was an anthropology major at Appalachian University with a focus in archeology. The Appalachian mountains were named for the App uh latch ee Indians (spelled for phonetics, not correctly obviously)

My mom's side came over from Germany by 1726 and my dad's side in 1843, so I'm very German-American. A close friend is very proud of his Scottish ancestry and loves wear his kilt with his family tartan and a sporran. My oldest friend just recently found out that her dad's ancestors were Swabian and is so proud. I told her they'd have spoken a Franconian dialect similar to Bavarian.

Its not just state or country pride, alot of us even have pride in the city we come from. Like iv lived in San Diego my whole life, and there is a huge rivalry between southern California (so cal) and northern cali (nor cal). Also alot of us in my generation at least (im 35) would get 1904 / SD tattoos or wear clothing with 1904 / SD / so cal on it. 1904 means SD (San Diego). U also see alot of tattoos and clothing with ur area code (619 for san diego) or if u live in North county san Diego u get 760 and people from other cities in cali get their area codes. Now days u normally see this just with gang members, but like i said with my generation alot of us got these types of tattoos just cuz we were/are proud. And yes, i have a 1904 tat on my arm. But, on the other hand i don't really care im from cali (cali is a f'in hot mess) for me my only pride is national (obviously, im a very proud American) and city pride. Sry for the long essay on a video that is already 2months old. Lol. I need to really go to sleep lol

Something that I just realized while watching this video - Brits have forgotten their history. When William (the Conqueror) invaded from Normandy, his troops cut down the English easily since he had hundreds of bowmen and the English had none. After all, the only reason to own a bow in England at the time was to hunt...hunt deer...the King's deer. Therefore, bows had been outlawed. Now you've outlawed (and confiscated) your firearms. Should an enemy invade...you have no defense. We have a saying in the States - those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it. Sorry.

Whoever his host was at the firing range apparently dropped the ball. Yes, there are guns everywhere, but there are very specific rules just for picking it up and moving it safely. For instance, you never let the barrel point toward something or someone you don't intend to shoot. In other words, you always keep it aimed at the ground. To hold it flat in your hands with the barrel pointed left or right is breaking the rules. He should have called ahead and went to a gun safety course, which is necessary for a license i believe, and had someone qualified introduce him to it. No, you can't just walk into a store and buy one. St Patrick's Day is huge because of drinking. Everybody is Irish on St Patrick's Day. Its the same with Cinco de Mayo. Mecico barely acknowledges the Battle of Puebla, won by a Priest and General Jose Maria Morelos over the French (no offense). The States use it as an excuse to drink heavily. Lol

New York is about as non-typical America as you can get except for Puerto Rico, where the language is different. If you're ever interested in typical America, Missouri is your best bet. It's where fast food companies would test new recipes because success in Missouri correlated strongly with success in America.

Honestly, no politics with the gun thing, at least on my end. Rather knowledge..... You can't just "buy a gun off the shelf". At least, not anymore. You can buy them, but you do need a license to have a firearm. Also, a background check. In the case of pistols, you can conceal carry, it just depends on your state. As far as conceal carry, you got to have a license to even do that. And yes, another background check to conceal carry. See? No politics, or arguments, just facts.

It's not that easy to just go into a store and buy a gun in most states. Especially pistols. It could take a week, (I believe, could be wrong, ) for a pistol. But it is easier to get rifles or shotguns. I live in New York with some of the strictest laws on firearms. Next to California.

He was talking about heritage. Well in my city every summer we have many festivals based on the different heritage. The Greek -American festival, the Polish- American festival, the India-American Festival and the German American festival. Then there is also the celebrations for holidays of other countries like the big St Patrick's day and Cinco de Mayo celebrations. Everyone looks forward to these festivals as a time to not only celebrate the different cultures but to taste the authentic dishes. These are huge festivals lasting the entire weekend, and my city is not even that large being only about 250,000 people.
