Some people say that Van Wilder is the movie loosely based on his life, and some people say that it isn't. I don't know for sure. But, I tend to think that it wasn't, because the funnest part of the story was left out of the movie. Ryan Reynolds never went to Russia in the movie

If you want the best version of this story possible, look up the one where he has a sign language interpreter on stage with him. Also, he’s said he goes shirtless because he got tired of sweating through shirts.

Just saw it, it's fucking hilarious, a great combination of (mostly) true tales from the past, with a framing device set in a fictional present where he and his dad get kidnapped to Russia to find a watch he stole on that train.

I attended Florida State AND took Russian but it was about 14 years before Bert. My Russian class was immersive and I was lost from day 1. The teacher's wife was also a Russian teacher (she was actually Ukrainian) I lost a lot of confidence in how well he actually spoke Russian when I would see him outside class talking with his wife....in English.

@@BloodKills I felt that given their somewhat unique shared language (unique at FSU) they would have opted for Russian if the fluency was there. However by his accent in English I think that either he was British by birth or learned Oxford English rather than American English (not uncommon). Her accent was thick Eastern European but as I would learn later she was Ukrainian and not Russian although she was the another FSU Russian instructor. Maybe she viewed the Russian language as a symbol of Soviet oppression since it was 1979 and opted to never use it when not teaching it. It is all together possible that English was just the language in which they felt better able to converse given different backgrounds. Then again, maybe my immersive Russian teacher wasn't actually fluent in Russian. I suspect she probably was at least.

For the record, he doesn’t wear the shirt because being sweaty and uncomfortable on stage makes him more self conscious than not wearing the shirt. If he’s doing an interview or whatever and it’s not under hot theatre lights he does wear a shirt!

The head of the whole trip asked him before they when back with the train, to party with the gangsters. It was the calmest trip so far, and they wanted it to stay that way. Paying off the mobsters didnt garanti that you would not be robbed or worse

Last time I visited my friends in colorado, we were walking around the Red Rocks Amphitheater and we walked right past Bert! He was there doing promos for his upcoming tour. Took tons of pictures with fans!
