A corn dog (also spelled corndog) is a sausage (usually a hot dog) on a stick that has been coated in a thick layer of cornmeal batter and deep fried. It originated in the United States and is commonly found in American cuisine. A chili dog is a hot dog served in a bun and topped with a meat sauce, such as chili con carne. Additional toppings may include cheese, onions, and mustard. The style has multiple regional variations in the United States, many calling for specific and unique sauce ingredients, types of hot dogs, or types of buns and referred to regionally under region-specific names.

I think the most iconic chili dog is the coney dog, popularized when it was sold at Coney Island. The chili sauce on a coney dog is pretty basic, usually - onions and peppers are cooked down to where they don't really add texture at all, has finely ground beef, some tomato paste, and spices, usually simmered for several hours until it's more of a meaty sauce than a "chili." It's also topped with cheese, and usually some raw diced onions. Or caramelized onions if you don't like how pungent raw onions are. It really just takes patience, and you could probably make coney sauce using a recipe online no problem. And as long as you have the capacity to deep fry a corn dog, I could see a video about corn dogs vs chili dogs being pretty easy to do, even in the UK. Pro tip for making a corn dog - be sure to put the cornmeal batter in a tall drinking glass - that way it'll be easy to dip the hotdog on a stick into the batter without having to roll it around in a bowl to get an even coating.

A corn dog is a hot dog dipped into a pot of corn meal batter before placing gently into a pot of boiling cooking oil... When the batter is nice and golden brown, similar to a french fry/chip, remove corn dog and insert a stick before eating it... I prefer yellow mustard applied upon, but other prefer other garnishes... Simply put Chicago is in the middle of America's corn belt, just about every farm grows corn within 500 miles... Corn is a large NATIVE staple cash crop not grown in Europe, maybe in a few gardens but not as a cash crop... Americans use the entire plant, from the ears to the stalks to produce canned and frozen corn, corn meal, corn chips, corn flakes, pop corn, corn oil, and liquid sugar/high fructose corn syrup...

When you try root beer, do a root beer float! Two scoops of your best vanilla ice cream in a frosted mug or glass, then pour ice cold root beer on top. Eat the ice cream and drink the root beer... it's tradition!

I've never liked root beer, maybe because all the mass-market types are so overly sweet. But years ago, I saw a TV show about soft drinks and Virgil's was considered the best. All I can recall is that it _was_ better, but I still don't like the taste.

sarsaparilla might be the only kind of "root beer" you'd enjoy then. it is technically NOT root beer, as it's made from a completely different plant, but tastes similar enough to usually be considered the same thing while being less sugary sweet. you can find it all over america, but it's more prevalent in the deep south and midwest.

You need to try a root beer float. Its just vanilla soft ice cream in a large frozen mug the just pour your root beer over the ice cream into the mug. Beware it will foam up a lot so pour slowly. Also you will need a spoon.

You're unlikely to enjoy root beer. It seems to be one of those things that people tend not to enjoy unless they grew up with it. I love the stuff, but Europeans usually say it that tastes like children's medicine to them. I can only assume from this that your kids' medicinal syrups are flavored very differently from ours. (Ours are usually a sickly-sweet cherry with a weird aftertaste.) Your chances of liking it are much higher if you have it *very* cold and as part of a root beer float -- which is to say, topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. To be fair, I think just about everyone likes it best that way. We may have battered sausage somewhere in the US, as it's a big place, but I've never once encountered it here. It's definitely not a staple fast food, like it is in chip shops in the UK. A corn dog is basically a battered sausage, but with a very thick corn meal batter and served onna stick. I'm not a big fan, myself.

@Seth Jaffe I suspect those mouthwashes and medicines may be flavored with wintergreen. Wintergreen is high in methyl salicylate, which is also the major flavor component in sassafras root and black birch bark - so the root beer flavor.

I have never heard of, or even thought of, eating a chili dog with my hands. The idea is ludicrous. When I was stationed in the US Air Force in Germany, my landlady loved root beer, and we got her lots of it from the Base Exchange. I laughed when I realized that Lawrence was holding onto the top of his map instead of having it on the wall.

Personally, I like to combine two of them into one: 1st, get an extra-large sized roll shaped like a hotdog bun (sometimes called steak-rolls), then put the corn-dog in it (minus the stick), then pile on the chili, of whatever style you like! It will be of monstrous size, so one will be enough for most people ... unless you're someone like me, who won an eating contest by eating 4-1/2 pounds of hot-dogs -- then you you'll probably want a second (or even a *third* ... if you're looking to 'pig-out'!). Accompany it with root-beer (I like Barq's). O-o-h, *so good!* P.S.- for me, it *must* be topped with both ketchup (preferably Heinz) and mustard (preferably French's). A little BBQ sauce (preferably Masterpiece) doesn't hurt, either. Yes, it will be messy ... I definitely recommend leaning forward over your plate!

Idk about the rest of you Americans, but here in Southern California, we have bar/grills where you just wear a wristband, get a glass, and get a selection of 150 beers. You also pour your own, and pay at the end. Every beer on tap by the way. Edit: I also believe LIGHT beer is more of an American Summer thing. We drink lighter beer because of how hot it usually is (been on average 35°C everyday the last 2 months), and drinking heavy lager all day can ruin a weekend. Lol And Beesley, you ever want to come to Southern California, I have a house. More then welcome to come visit, I can show you around and give you places to go on your own. Ontario, California. Were right in the middle of all of Southern California.

Rootbeer isn't a food, but it also isn't a beer. It's a soda (pop). But you could definitely call a Rootbeer Float a food. That's Vanilla Ice-cream with Rootbeer poured over it in a glass. This results int the nucleation of the CO2 from the soda and it merging and mixing with the ice-cream to make a foamy frothy carbonized ice-cream treat. PS. he pronounced Sassafras properly the first time he said it.

Corn dogs are great. Have you ever had cornbread? It’s great. Anyway, it’s a hot dog on a stick dipped in a cornmeal batter and deep fried. Most American shopping malls have a fast food restaurant called “Hot Dog On A Stick” that features corn dogs and fresh homemade lemonade. They’re famous for their female counter persons wearing shorts and an unusually tall hat that’s red, white, blue, and yellow. I’m sure you’ve seen them in movies. Root beer is great. Europeans think it tastes like medicine. It doesn’t. They also don’t like Dr. Pepper. Root Beer is best if it’s fresh but that’s hard to find even here. I’d be hard pressed to find some in Los Angeles though it would be easy in the Midwest. You have Baskin-Robbins Ice Cream Shoppes in the UK. I’m sure you can check out American ice cream flavors there. Apparently there are nearly 100 locations in the UK so it should be easy to find. I’ve never had a pork tenderloin sandwich as I’ve never lived in Indiana and only was there for a few minutes at a time in transit. (Chicago to SW Michigan)

A chili dog is a hot dog on a bread bun, then chilli (beans & meat in spicy sauce) is poured over it. Then you can garnish it with onions & cheese or just one of them. Yes, it's messy, but one can use a knife & fork. Root beer is soda pop with a strong vanilla flavor. "Root beer float" is a scoop of vanilla ice cream in a tall glass with root beer poured over it. Use a straw and tall spoon. Yum! Never heard of "Superman" flavor ice cream. Butter pecan! NOT Pechan. Some Americans pronounce it peekan, others pronounce it peh-khan. Never "ch". A single "c" does not the sound "ch" make! Someone set him up to sound silly.

Two examples of the Chili Dog ... Cincinnati style is a finely-ground, sweet/cinnamon meat sauce with finely grated cheese, and onions on top... WV style is a a bit of mustard on the dog, with tangy meat sauce and then creamy/sweet coleslaw plopped on top... really different flavors but both delicious!

It's funny how Indiana-centric his food selections are. It's really different depending on the region of the country. Although corndogs and chili dogs are everywhere, they aren't particularly common as 'summer foods' where I live in the Pacific NW. In the 60 years that I've lived in the region, I can't remember ever serving or being served corndogs or chili dogs at any time. About the only place I've ever seen a corndog served is at the state fair. I have to agree with him, I think they're disgusting. I'm not a fan of root beer, either. I haven't had it since I was a child, and I didn't like it then. Summer food for us is primarily grilled burgers and German sausages with baked beans, cole slaw, and different melons and berries (blueberries, strawberries and local Marion berries, which are unique to Oregon.) When it comes to ice cream, most people buy locally made--Tillamook and Umpqua are probably the favorites here--or, in our circle of friends, we just go down the street to a neighborhood ice creamery and buy pints of freshly made ice cream. And his pronunciation of Pecan was way off the mark. We say 'pekahn'.

American here! I won't eat a corn dog but I will stuff my face with a chili dog. I love them! Root beer is absolutely disgusting, even if it's made into a float. Just gross! America has the best ice cream and we eat it all year. As for butter pecan ice cream, it's delicious. It's basically vanilla ice cream with pecans. I will only eat pecans in ice cream. Otherwise, I don't like them. 😁 Pecan pie is something we generally eat at Thanksgiving time. It's very sweet. I prefer sweet potato pie and apple pie over pecan pie though. And btw, no American says "pechaun". We say "pea can" or "puh cahn" depending on where we live or grew up. Not sure where he got "pechaun" from.

Laurence is so much fun to watch, he is very entertaining. The Midwest is so happy he's here. He's teasing us with his pronunciation of "butter pecan." In the Midwest region of America we say (But-ter Pee-kahn). Depending on the dialect. Root beer is wonderful but it's a complete American taste. You will love it or hate it. Many of us love it...it's best served very cold or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream in it. Root beer is a soda pop.
