Back in the 1990s MILITARY HISTORY magazine offered a series of exciting prints of historical battles around the world of different times and places. One of the fine color prints being advertised was that of a bird's eye view of a British infantry square against a horde of Zulu warriors. The color print focused on one corner of the British square where it shows Zulu warriors just starting to break through the corner. Ostensibly an infantry defensive square was most vulnerable at its corners. The message of the color print is clear. The doom of that British expeditionary force is at hand.

This is not accurate because the Zulu used cattle stampeding at the beginning of their attack. Following the stampede spears where launched followed by asegai (Short spear with a long head made for stabing at close quarters). Also, note that Zulu warriors were drilled hard and normally attacked at sprinting speeds. Another problem is that they would almost never attack from low ground.

The British Square as it’s called, is an ingenious formation because it has no exposed flanks to attack . So I would say that the only hope you have of defeating such a formation, is instead of attacking all sides of it at once. Concentrate your attack against one side of the square while you hold what’s left of your army in reserve on the other side of the square. Once your concentrated attack punches a hole through the side of the square they are attacking they will force other sides of the square to try and fill in the hole. Thus weakening other sides of the square and at that time you send in your reserve forces to take advantage of the weakened sides of the square… maybe it works maybe it doesn’t …I’m just saying!!!

I'm not sure what battle this is trying to depict. The single major success the Zulus at Isandlwana did not involve a defensive square formation, but rather a poorly established line with a weak supply of ammunition. When the ammunition ran out the Zulus overpowered the redcoats. In contrast, Ulundi was a much better defensive formation and the Zulus were wiped out with minimal losses to the British. People mention the use of the Gatling Gun at Ulundi, and it was certainly a feature, but the rapid fire of the Martini Henry with sufficient ammunition would have sufficed, as shown at Rorke's Drift.

This is nothing like the square. They were much, much tighter formations with little space inside and multiple lines of infantry. THe Zulu would not be able to get inside the square and could only try to wear it away. They would have to bunch up as they approached and would face a wall of bayonets. The Zulu were typically afraid of calvary and considered the bayonet a very serious weapon. In this case the cavalry should have acted independently or got off the horses and acted as additional infantry.
@kenvalentine5341

The typical British infantry square was six ranks deep, not two ranks as shown here. Also, the British force would have had at least one battery of artillery with guns positioned at the corners of the square, firing solid shot and/or shell beyond 409 yards and cannister at closer ranges. Finally, the British rate of fore was too slow--typical rates of fire for trained troops equipped with single-shot breechloading Martini-Henry rifles were on the order of 14 shots per minute.
