The British Music Hall Society honoured ‘The Boy From Bermondsey’ with a Celebratory Lunch, at Mayfair’s Lansdowne Club, on 7 November 2019. Amongst the guests were British Music Hall Society co-founder Gerald Glover & founder-treasurer Johnny Cliff. One year on, edited highlights of the footage shot on the day have now been uploaded to KZitem - so fans, of the recently-knighted Sir Tommy Steele, can see and hear what was said by a raft of speakers. Paying tribute (in alphabetical order) are:- *-ADAM BORZONE - who compered the function and read a fan letter from a member of the Royal Family -*- DR. HARRY BRÜNJES - talking about his next-door neighbour and working in show business, during the 70’s in Llandudno and Great Yarmouth, as well his current role as Chairman of English National Opera -*- WYN CALVIN - in his 75th. year in show business, who recalled playing Liverpool in pantomime with Tommy - during which run, Tommy shared updates on how the songs from ‘Half A Sixpence’ were coming along -*- BILL KENWRIGHT CBE - whose production of ‘The Glenn Miller Story’ provided a vehicle for Tommy’s latest live stage appearance - hot on the heels of another BKP success: ‘Scrooge’ -*- RICHARD M MILLS - Tommy’s agent for many years, with Lord Bernard Delfont, who told a never-before-heard story about Peter Sellers and Tommy’s record-breaking number of appearances at the London Palladium -*- SIR TIM RICE - recalling his teenage years as an avid fan, buying Tommy’s records, right up to a delightful anecdote about an unexpected recent moment in Tommy’s dressing room at the London Coliseum -*- As a bonus - Tommy, himself, took to the floor for 17 minutes: sharing key moments - in a career spanning more than 64 years - during which he referred to Arthur Askey, Charlie Chaplin, Chiswick Empire, Crazy Gang, Gracie Fields, Harold Fielding, Finsbury Park Empire, Bud Flanagan, George Formby, Darbo Hicks, Fred Karno, Stan Laurel, London Palladium, Max Miller, Star Music Hall, Tommy Trinder amongst many others. Also mentioned, by other speakers, were Fred Astaire, Wyn Calvin, David Carter, Johnnie Cliff, Lord Bernard Delfont, Walt Disney, Harry Fowler, Benny Hill, HRH Prince Edward: Earl of Wessex, Gerald Glover, Debbie Hudd, Roy Hudd, Gene Kelly, Ray Mackender, Glenn Miller, Guy Mitchell, Andrew Ray, Rock & Roll, Danny La Rue, Peter Sellers & Shakin’ Stevens. Officers and committee members of The British Music Hall Society played pivotal roles in the planning, organisation and post-production of this event - at which Tommy was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award.
