In Afghanistan and Iraq I helped maintain some of the Special operations vehicles and the thing I realized us these dudes were the most bad ass dudes doing the most badass things and they did not act like dicks. They never put up a show being a hardass or scowl and act like thugs. They were some of the most fun guys to hang around. Their courage and bravery seeped out of them and infected everyone around them. I would have died before showing cowardice around them. Every month, we had a memorial service for the ones died. It felt like the war would never end and they would tell us about the guys that died. And I would think there goes our best while our garbage humans continue breathing.

We did a bit of stagging on comms for the SAS and SBS out at “the fort” in Afghanistan. They had a little games room portacabin with an Xbox in there and call of duty. As the fort was nearly always empty, as these guys were out on ops, we had full use of their facilities whilst they were away. I was sat playing the Xbox for a bit one day, and unbeknown to me, the SBS guys had come back into the fort, and wanted a bit of down time. I’m sat there in normal Uniform in this portacabin, and suddenly the door flies open. In come about 5 SBS dudes, who you know are just absolute badasses, they’re in civilian attire, beards, shaggy hair, and sunglasses on, carrying diemaco C7s, and just sit down next to me on the sofas, chatting to each other and barely acknowledging me. Not gonna lie, even as a soldier myself I shat my pants and felt so small and insignificant next to these dudes, who just exuded confidence and professionalism from every pore. I just paused the game and sat there quietly whilst they were chatting. Then, they realised I had gone quiet. They all shuffled back in their seats and got comfortable, but sat there looking at me in total silence. I went to say something and kinda fumbled my words a bit, at which point one guy just nudged me in the arm and laughed, said “ fucking hell, relax mate, you look like a rabbit in the headlights there pal! Pass me a controller, let’s have a blast!” So I sat there playing call of duty with a bunch of SBS dudes, and honestly it was completely fucking surreal 🤣 to regular forces, the SAS and SBS are literally god teir, and I don’t care who you are, when you meet a bunch of them as a regular squaddie you cannot help being struck with a sense of awe and wonder like a little Kid looking at a superhero 🤣🤣 they were awesome guys and really chill, but just knowing what they do day to day and how hard they worked to get into the squadrons, and just how tough they are, makes them quite intimidating guys. Most civilians might sit next to these guys in a pub and have no idea who they are. But when your in a room and a bunch of them walk in, and you know who they are, it just feels pretty odd, like you’re in the presence of people that most people Don’t even know exist. It’s like sitting round a table of legends and feeling like an impostor 🤣🤣

British SAS are a bit different from American Special Forces. Also, U.S. S.F. are very different from Delta and, of course, Seal Teams (not forgetting Delta, conglomerate Black Ops, and Airborne Rangers). Hollywood has glorified (rightly so in many cases) them, but blurred the public's understanding of what roles these units play, and their unique importance in the bigger picture. Special Forces units often need to look more casual, to blend in more, so that locals are more at ease with them, etc. It can make it easier to gain trust, and intel. That's just one example of why they are unique, but it's not all about being cool. My Dad was a Forward Artillery Observer during the Nam Tet Offensive. He deservedly is a bit of a genius and got to work with one the first, and eventually more widely used, ground to ground missiles, the Lancer. Guys like him would often literally go danger close to the enemy, and use 10 digit grid points to call in artillery to rain down in positions around them. However, his role was hardly like one of the aforementioned units. So, what is cool, and who decides? Without question, every soldier who truly serves gets my respect and are cool in my eyes.

If you bring up the pecking order as you say Hollywood as glorified specifically the SEALs the reality is minus SEAL Team 6 the SEAL are considered tier 2 whilst the SAS, SBS, Delta, Polish GROM and many other are all classified as TIER 1 units again you have the stand out units within not sure what Delta would be but groups like 22 SAS, SEAL TEAM 6 Etcetera but i do firmly believe that the SAS, SBS and Delta go way above TIER 1 because both groups have a level of autonomy that other unit's just done have.

As a Brit, sadly that is a fair comment. Populist politics, ie. listening to the ordinary person is a dirty word here. As a result we have decades of inappropriate unwanted immigration that is wrecking us.

First time I saw special ops in Djibouti, they didn't even have matching utils, but you just instinctively knew not to f* with them.

Keep in mind that special forces are an umbrella term. That stuff breaks down into so many small units that it's crazy. Some have strict operating rules. So are super lax.

The Iranian embassy siege being televised was the biggest and best PR for the SAS I was only a young lad but I remember watching it and later reading that ( I'm not sure if it's hundred percent true) but when PC Lock was trying to tackle the terrorists leader on the floor in all the chaos an SAS operater told PC Lock to roll away and the SAS pretty much cut the terrorist in half with rounds I remember being s typical young lad who loves war, guns etc hearing that was the coolest story ever, even now as English man you have that pride and utter respect for them cool as fuck 💯💯💥💥

From my days in 14 Company, SAS stand out too much to do undercover work; every last one of them has a 'tache and you can feel their eyes on the back of your neck from a mile away.

SAS story - We had an old man regularly drink in our pub and I got to know him a little bit. Him and his best mate would drink from morning to the afternoon most days. One day the old mans best mate passed away and he found out whilst I was working the bar. This old man ended up crying, backed himself up against the wall, started screaming and picked up a pint glass. Turns out they were both ex SAS and were basically eachothers support network. No other close family. So when the old man had no one left that understood what he went through to talk to anymore. He went a bit nuts. He didn't hurt anybody but the manager of the pub was the only person who knew they were both ex SAS. Fair to say no one went near him and I tried to talk him down but he was having some sort of PTSD episode. My manager didn't phone the police but we exacuated people from the pub to give him space. Eventually the screaming stopped and he calmed down after my manager comforted him. Even though he was like in his 60s, he could probably still kill you with his bare hands. One of the nicest, calm, respectful but most unassuming guys I've ever come across.
