I think it's harder for people who are not from either country to tell it apart. Eg, as a Brit I can easily tell the Aussie girl is not from here, but I find it incredibly difficult at times to distinguish American and Canadian when they swear blind they are different.

pretty big difference to me, perhaps you have to be one of those accents naturally to hear the differences. The Australian does have an educated Australian accent so it does have a lot of traits in common with an English accent.

I've heard if you have a well spoken Aussie accent and travel to England it changes pretty quickly and vice versa, but takes American accents much longer either way. So you've probably got a very mixed accent depending how long you've been there.

I've always used Blow Off to mean unwind, as in " I gotta blow off some steam" to unwind from being angry or stressed, I OCCASIONALLY use it to mean - avoid or get rid someone - but saying that can be misinterpreted as a sexual act - as in Oral Sex. So for me, to Blow Off would mostly mean to unwind from being stressed or angry - may be it's a Northern thing.

Lol, that's cute. It's good to learn each accent in the standard pronunciation or general accent, and then it'll be easier to tell them apart, as well as keep them separate when doing the accent. Accents have 4 fundamental aspects: pronunciation, phonation, resonance, and intonation. When you learn each of these aspects, you'll notice that British and Aussie accents differ a lot in resonance and intonation, but phonation and pronunciation may be similar. A lot of people have a hard time differentiating these two girls' accent because the Melbourne accent shares similarities with the London accent in all four aspects. I suggest learning a Sydney accent, which I think is a very aesthetic quintessential Aussie accent, and is the Aussie accent of my choice. For British, I prefer to go with a London accent, 'cause RP sounds like really old fashioned and formal.

alex ojideagu what gives you the right to call me an idiot? I made a fair point. Yes, the Union Flag represents the English people BUT ALSO the people of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, as a whole, as the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Your example of Andy Murray playing tennis, in my opinion, isn't the best. Andy Murray is Scottish, yes, but he plays tennis as part of the Great British team (which is badly named because it includes Northern Ireland.) Because Murray plays for the Great British team, people wave the Union Flag (ie. the Flag of Great Britain and Northern Ireland). Don't call me an idiot - or anyone else for that matter - for making a point.

Rangers FC the Scottish football team often wave British flags. It's acceptable to wave British flags when talking about one of the home nations. It's at our discretion. Even the national Anthem is not official.

When I was a child in the 1960’s in Brooklyn, NY we said, “Who cut the cheese?”. Then someone might reply, “He who smelt it, dealt it!”.

The American "fart" came here in the 80s, which outraged my parents, who banned the saying from their house. Dad still only uses "blow off."
