It is the HMS Thunderbolt , if you go to 2.44 and enlarge picture you can see the name on the tower

Well done! I had realised it was longer than TORBAY. Those big T-Class submarines were so vulnerable from the air, as they could be seen in the clear water.

This was the HMS thetis that sank in Liverpool bay in 1939 with the loss of all onboard, including workers from the ship yard. She was raised cleaned out and renamed Thunderbolt.

My dad, Mick Stone, did a tour on Thunderbolt. Motor room, batteries etc. also the Tiptoe. Most of his service was on S23 Sibyl.

You could try the Imperial War Museum photo collection. They had IMGs of my father on HMS Torbay in Algiers 1943.

Why didn't the British build more subs to counter the German U-boats?

Did they keep prisoners on submarines? There's German prisoners at the end.

Very limited spare space. The prisoners shown were very likely picked up by a surface ship.
