Hi there. Another way to dip is to use a second container filled just to the depth you want the reservoir to fill. When the nib touches the bottom you'll never have too much ink. You have to add a few drops every so often as it goes down. You can also fill the nib with a small brush instead of dipping. You wipe the brush on the container rim after dipping it so you don't load too much. You stroke the brush on the side of the nib and see how much has gone in. The angle on the right-hand Brause help with Insular hands and regular Uncials as it allows the hand to be held at a natural angle while still producing a flatter stroke. Left-hand nibs are useful for learning Hebrew and Arabic because again the hand doesn't have to be held at an un-natural angle. The stiffness of Brause can help if the calligrapher is heavy handed and William Mitchell being softer and more flexible might help for a light handed person. Tape nibs are said to be between these two and are cheaper. I find Speedball nibs produce excellent strokes but are longer than the others so they feel far from the paper to me. Also as they don't have detachable reservoirs there's a trick to cleaning and drying them. A toothbrush for cleaning and to dry, slide a cloth or strip of blotting paper underneath (between the nib and reservoir) and not lift the reservoir up too much or it won't spring back down and make contact again. I always dry under the tab on the bottom to. They're too expensive and almost impossible to get in New Zealand (harder than they used to be - I got my first Speedball set back around 1977) for me to let them corrode.
