Watching Deebo since he came out, this is how Deebo runs routes even when he thinks he's getting the ball. I don't think it's necessarily lazy route running, like JT suggests. It's moreso that Deebo has such great short area quickness that he likes to lull defenders to sleep then accelerate out of a break to get separation. He does this CONSTANTLY. And it cooks defenders regularly. It's also effective against zone coverage because Deebo is top tier at settling into vacated zones. That route running style just allows for him to sit down in empty spaces easily.

I think aiyuk and Purdy are just on the same page with the mind reading, they did it last week too with the adjustment at the end of the route where he threw it to space and he cut up under the DB. Purdy just trusts and knows his WR and Aiyuk trust and knows his QB. They know each other. To me right now, they are the best combo in the NFL. Reminds me sort of when Romo and Dez bryant were doing it, or at least of a video Is saw...Dez was caught on camera once telling Tony "come on Tony! we the best in the NFL at this! We the Best in the NFL! Aint no body better!"...he wanted Romo to throw it to him when he had one on one coverage because he knew Romo would put it in the right place for him to go get it. Right now Purdy and Aiyuk or on that same wavelength, they just know and trust each other. Its Awesome to watch. You are right though, purdy threw it to the open space, and he knew Ayuik would go get it..Brock is a gun slinger who knows how to take chances w/ the appropriate risk. Its exactly what you want. There’s two thoughts I can toss out there on the purpose of that shuffle motion you hate (kinda just throwing some ideas). First, there’s some ambiguity to that motion, in that the defense doesn’t know how far CMC is going to go, and they can snap the ball at any point during the motion (whereas if he was moving toward the line for part of it they couldn’t snap it then). So it potentially create some confusion on when, or even whether, they should adjust in response. Also, in the example of the play starting at 26:27, I think they deliberately want CMC a few yards behind the line to create more vertical separation between him and the receiver in front of him (Aiyuk in this case). On that play, if CMC had started closer to the line, and to Aiyuk, and run his route deeper, that would have just made it easier for the safety to drive on his route like he did. I think the goal of CMC’s route there was to get him the ball in space to get those last few yards, whereas running him deeper would have likely drawn closer coverage.

The last play per Kyle’s presser is usually to the under man 89 woerner for an easy 10-13 yards. He reads the LBs if they go high he goes low and vice versa. He said Brock just went high anyways knowing he could make the play. He said it wasn’t the way it was supposed to be say pre snap, but that “Brock proved what was the right throw there” or something to that effect.

On the Aiyuk TD-Shanahan said that the drop back drift to the left was designed into the play, and that the routes were supposed to be a high/low. Anyway, Shanahan said that, live, he thought it should go to whatever the low route was since the defense dropped so far, but that Purdy “proved” that there was space behind them for the high route as he released the ball. -From the postgame interview

I think Shanahan is setting up something we have not seen yet with that motion. Right now I think he is just trying to move the linebacker. Or keep in mind he is drawing the defense's attention to a guy that accounts for a large chunk of the offense as aa decoy. If it does not become clear in the next few weeks what the purpose is then I will join you in scratching my head on the side shuffle.
@TheKylehernandez

I think the objective with the spacing from the LOS might be to try to pull the LB down towards the LOS and create a true 3 level read all to one side with Aiyuk, Jennings, and CMC. Read the LB, if he sits back too far, just hit CMC since he's so great after the catch. If he comes up field to play that choice, there should be a lot of space for Jennings and Aiyuk to have between them so one defender can't disrupt two routes. I am not sure it works, but that might be the idea in the RZ where vertical spacing is at a premium.

The shuffle motion might make sense in short yardage where you are giving a running play look and then you put pressure on the defense to adjust the pass coverage when you need a short gain. But in one case here they do it on 3rd and forever, yeah, it makes no sense there.

This is the point, IMO. The idea is to stretch the defense vertically immediately. I think the CMC shuffle initially presents like he could get handed the ball so they see how the defense lines up against the run. After the shift, he is a receiver but starts 5ft back to keep him more shallow so the check down timing and spacing lines up with the other reads. If he is at the line he will be further downfield in coverage and will be too deep for a check down.
@marcusmason8325

I think Shanahan prefers the timing and route spacing from that lil side shuffle motion. It's also like a free starter read cause it's freezes that defender and gives the QB/WR an advantage to dictate. It's just moving a defender.

25:16 Kyle said the pick (in essence) was on an unscouted disguise. I'd bet it's by design. Kyle doesn't let receivers make up their own routes. And BA has the foot talent to run that route precisely.

My guess is the reason for that sideways motion that you don’t like is Kyle likes to have “useless” or even sacrificial motion to set up a big play or TD later - just seeing CMC move can also act as a subtle PA effect

It can also decoy for CMC running to the flat which can bring up defenders as well

Love the vids. I've learned to dread any play that begins with the CMC shuffle motion 😅

At 29:05 Kyle came out and said that wasn’t the play called. It was supposed to be a check down but Brock decided to throw it deep during the play. So I think he did throw it to space. Kyle was shocked when Brock threw it but knew it was the right call when the ball was in the air. Love the break down and love Brock getting his.

He didn't say that wasn't the play that was called. He said he thought he would take the check down on the play because it was the easier, safer throw in that situation. But Aiyuk's route was still an option on the play. He just didn't think he would risk it with the depth that the linebackers had.

It's obvious what the point of the shuffle motion is: To create vertical spacing while the receivers are moving at full speed, without extending the window beyond what Purdy's arm allows, and allowing for screens, pitches and reverses. If McCaffrey or Samuel aren't starting six yards behind Aiyuk, how much separation is there going to be? You could have McCaffrey running at half speed or dress it up with a whip route or something to buy time...but that's changing the timing, his state of motion, and puts less stress on the defense. And that extra route makes McCaffrey run the extra yards anyway, and limits his route choice while we're at it.

Dear JT: I get your annoyance with Shanahan using motion in the gun. It's perplexing. I agree, that as a general principle, motion should be executed closer to the LOS. After watching a bunch of games the following are the reasons I have come up with as to why Kyle is doing this - and I'm not saying I'm right or that it makes good sense, just explanation: 1) Using the motion in the backfield w CMC/Deebo etc as a pure decoy or as way of getting the defense to adjust and giving the OL better blocking angles; 2) Threatening or executing the quick screen; 3) See starting at 11:38. CMC takes 4 hitches of motion to the left, Seattle's deep safety mirrors. At the snap CMC goes down and comes across at about the 15. Seattle 56 steps up to cover that CMC cross. CMC then leaks *behind* 56. I think this is an option route of some kind. Obviously KS is putting this on tape for a reason. As you note, there is the CMC "2 hitch" motion to the left where he cuts back across the formation and comes WAO for a TD. That's all I got.

Regarding the CMC shuffle motion... Does it make sense that (1) they can threaten bubble screen and (2) forces defenses to change defensive rules really late? You've made some good points about why you don't like it, so hopefully we can figure out the merit of the motion.

My theory for the shuffle motion: that 5 yard "delay" works in favor of the timing of the play and where the defenders are expected to be based on defending the other routes.

25:34 I think CMC was the read on that play, which explains why Shanahan said he put Purdy in a difficult situation You're backed up to your endzone, you want to get the ball out quick. Especially while playing behind the 22 or 26 ranked pass blocking line

Also that weird motion. I think it is just there to F with the assignments. I think they may be looking at their swing screens with it. Then once they hit that maybe a deep crossing route coming from the backside.

Sometimes when I see that shuffle, it allows CMC to read the field for a split second and be in an area for the check down.
