Josip Pičuljan senior (father)
Josip Pičuljan senior was born in 1897 in Rab, in the district of Benkovac - Split (Dalmatia). At the end of 1922, having finished the 5th grade of primary school, he started learning the trade under the master of various kinds of woodwork, Josip Španjol, owner of the boatyard in Rab. After three years of successful apprenticeship, at the end of 1925, he was released as a trained journeyman with the master’s recommendations. It is evident from his certificate that he worked as a boatbuilding journeyman with the same master on several occasions (from 1926 to 1931 and from 1933 to 1934) and was praised every time in every aspect, especially for his boatbuilding work.
In 1934, he started his own craft business and set up a small workshop in his parents’ house (the old Pičuljan houses). In the same year, he was joined by his brother Ante, who stayed with him until he was married, when he founded his own boatyard by the sea at the site of today’s Kaštel.
Joso’s house and workshop were located high above the sea, as was usual for all the houses in the village at that time, which meant that every new boat launch was a major social event. The boat had to be carried through the vineyards and narrow passages to the shore before it could be launched into the sea. This was an all-day job requiring the help of many villagers, followed by a great celebration with food and drink.
