Fun facts about Doctor Who in Japan you might be interested in. In the late 1980's Doctor Who was first broadcasted on NHK (The Japanese equivalent to the BBC) airing nine stories from the Tom Baker era with Japanese dubbing. The title of the nine stories where changed to be more Japanese sounding, for example Revenge of the Cybermen was changed to "Revenge of the Cyber-Humans", Genesis of the Daleks was changed to "Birth of the Daleks" and Planet of Evil was changed to "Devil's Planet". For the Japanese dubbing cast The Fourth Doctor was voiced by veteran voice actor Tesshō Genda and Sarah Jane Smith was voiced by Fumi Herano. Herano later reprise her role as Sarah Jane in Series 2's School Reunion. Also during the 80's a few Doctor Who Target Novels where translated into Japanese however due to the lack ability and no knowledge of the show Japanese artists had to be creative on what the monsters in the books where describe as so the designs of the monsters and the novel covers look completely different from the original Target novels. For the Daleks the artists created their own designs following what little information they can find. The Japanese Dalek designs where known as "Hayakawa" Daleks. In 2006, NHK bought the licence to broadcast and dub the revived series with both Series 1 and 2. However in 2008, NHK for unknown reasons stopped broadcasting Doctor Who but retain the broadcasting rights. The show will continue to air Series 3 on lesser known cable channels with Japanese subtitles but by the end of 2008 Doctor Who will stop airing altogether in Japan. However Doctor Who soon began to spawn a fan following and some even contacted NHK to have the show to comeback to Japanese TV but were ignored. Even so the Japanese fanbase slowly grew. Kadokawa a major publishing company wanted to gain the licencing rights to Doctor Who but where continuing blocked by NHK due to contractual agreement with the BBC. However Kadokawa soon found a way to get around NHK's loophole, they approached the BBC and agreed to purchase the rights to the show but they had to alter the title of the show by giving the show a subtitle. In 2012, Kadokawa released Series 5 of Doctor Who, now branded as "Doctor Who: New Generation" and aired on Hulu with subtitles. In 2016, Kadokawa and Hulu gain the dubbing rights from the BBC and the dub version aired later that year and was available on DVD. This move by Kadokawa massive boosted Doctor Who's popularity in Japan thanks to Kadokawa's clever strategy and marketing. After dubbing Series 7, the show was rebranded again with the arrival of the Twelve Doctor as "Doctor Who: Next Generation" and again with the Thirteenth Doctor as "Doctor Who: Reborn". As for Doctor Who's dubbing cast, some of the cast members are: The Fourth Doctor - Tesshō Genda Sarah Jane Smith - Fumi Herano The Ninth Doctor - Kazuhiro Yamaji Rose Tyler - Maaya Sakamoto Mickey Smith - Setsuji Sato Captain Jack Harkness - Takuma Takewaka The Tenth Doctor - Toshihiko Seki The Eleventh Doctor - Tokuyoshi Kawashima Amy Pond - Kana Uetake Rory Williams - Yoshiki Nakajima River Song & Clara Oswald - Kozue Harashima The War Doctor - Isamu Yusen The Twelfth Doctor - Naoya Uchida Bill Potts - Chiaki Mori Nardole - Soshiro Hori Missy - Satomi Kobayashi Thirteenth Doctor - Romi Park Graham O'Brien - Atsuyoshi Miyazaki Ryan Sinclair - Takuma Sasaki Yasmin Khan - Ayano Hamaguchi Interestingly both Kazuhiro Yamaji and Romi Park are actually married and Naoya Uchida and Satomi Kobayashi are huge fans of the show, Kobayashi more so since she regularly follows and buys Missy merchandise and has Missy as her profile and background image on her Twitter account. As for Uchida, he's a long time fan of the show and as stated one time that the Cybermen are his favourite Doctor Who monsters. Hope this information helps.

@@hunterharmak Yea it sucks for Japanese fans who want to watch series 3 and 4 dub because for some reason which Japanese fans have complained about is that there can never be a dub version of series 3 and 4 due to NHK stubborn refusal to hand over the dubbing and broadcasting rights of series 3 and 4 over to another company like Kadokawa.

My headcanon for the UNIT dating controversy is that the returning old companion in Mawdryn Undead actually was Ian Chesterton as planned at the scripting stage and the Black Guardian was fucking with the continuity by making Ian appear to look like the Brigadier and putting false memories into his head.
@christopherlockery9629
3 жыл бұрын
No a bad idea, sort of reminds me of my idea that the Black Guardian in fact altered the Web of Time itself in order for his master plan to work, thus the issue with UNIT dating.. In my mind the real reason why the Time Lords exiled the Doctor to 1970s-1980s Earth was due in part to the fact that the very fabric of Time was somehow damaged, resulting in it being in flux, hence the fact that some of the UNIT tales can be set down to being set in the 1970s (sort of...) while others can be set down to being set in the 1980s (sort of...) due to the Time War (at least part of which was taking place during the end of the Classic Series, albeit in the background, most likely the Doctor was unaware of what was going on, barring perhaps his Seventh Incarnation) the Web of Time was then altered yet again thus bringing the 1970s-1980s eras to be more in line with 'our' 1970s-1980s eras. Happy Times and Places
@tenacious3911

@@christopherlockery9629 If you explain away Mawdryn Undead somehow it all becomes much easier. The UNIT era stories themselves rarely mention dates. The closest we've got to a date for the start of the era is Travers claiming 1935 was "over 40 years ago", but he's been depicted as getting "30" and "40" mixed up in spinoff novels. Julius Silverstein says the Yeti has been in his museum for over 30 years, it seems a bit odd Travers would hang on to it for around a decade before selling it. I tend to work with a date of around 1969-1970 for Web of Fear and 1974-1980 for the main UNIT stories. Terror of the Zygons implies Margaret Thatcher has become Prime Minister. It was written around the time of the Conservative Leadership Election so its definitely a topical reference, setting the story after 1979 (a callback to naming the Prime Minister as "Jeremy" in The Green Death, implying Jeremy Thorpe won the upcoming 1974 election). I'd go with around 1980, since Sarah mentions she's from 1980 in Pyramids of Mars.

Honestly the idea of a Doctor who story not being finished after the Doctor leaves is strange to me. Like the fact that people are making snuff films in Fetch Priory or vandalising the abandoned global chemicals building in Llanfairfach or that surviving side characters have to live their lives afterwards is just chilling to me. Perhaps it’s just because we’re so used to just focusing on the Doctor’s perspective as they hop around time and space that we forget that life has to move on for everyone involved and the footprint the Doctor leaves on these locations will either be celebrated or forgotten. I hope we get more stories exploring this kind of angle as it was probably the most surprising and intriguing elements of the recent Witchinders novelisation.

I don't really feel like the 12th Doctor's line about, "hardly anything is evil. But most things are hungry", is really a contradiction of the series. I see it as him talking about how nature causes certain creatures to prey on others. Doesn't really make them evil. And the "hardly" makes clear he believes evil exists. It's just not as wide spread as some people might think.
