This song seems like one about leaving behind terrible traditions, “I’ll never wear your broken crown!” Is less about them giving up a crown, and more about them making their own crown. A shiny beautiful new crown that will never wear and chip like the one before it. It’s a very “I will take your throne, and _-destroy it.-_ Because I’ll be *damned* if I ever become like you. I found the lyrics very confusing to begin with, but I think I'm starting to understand. The song is about rejecting your heritage, not taking part in traditions or expectations you find wrong, and to not accept the continuation of what is sick and ruined, i.e. the broken crown. And to add to the fandom debate going on in the comment section - I personally find that it suits the relationship between Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch and their father Magneto (ignoring the recent retcon).

This song reminds me of Melkor as well, much more than it does Aragorn. To me it sounds as though it is describing Melkors emotional state, and what he was going through and his journey. It kind of shows why he made the choice to disobey Illuvitar. It says "Ill never wear your broken crown" Melkor thought that it was wrong for illuvitar to controll the others and wanted to break out and create something new. He thought that it would be more beautiful with individuality. He didn't want to be a follower and wear the token crown just for following blindly. There are more reasons but i'm too tired to explain.

I don't cry at songs often... but these guys. They're breaking me. For those who say it doesn't make sense, I don't get it. This makes more sense to me than half the music I listen to. As this obviously fits almost every chosen one story, I'd like to add about one I'm currently reading. This fits Rand in wheel of time very particularly, considering the whole illusion of choice, desire to go home at the start, feeling of mistrust and lies, and mostly a desire to leave aside his status as the chosen one and his crown until he is forced to acknowledge what he is, and then is forced to accept what he is. His mistrust still is apparent though.

Dumbledore knew where he was always, yet he never saved harry, dumbles needed him pliable, so he could make harry into the light's personal weapon. he says to harry that he had a choice yet he was never given one his whole life. his entire life was dictated from the beginning. I wouldn't be surprised if dumbles had done it to voldy because just by the way that he acts its as if he himself is under an imperious. Tom had real goals and he wanted the wizarding world to be better and not for them to lose their traditions, Tom actually wanted to teach DADA, yet Dumbledore denied him when came back after Dippet told him to travel and find experience. Dumbledore is the main enemy yet Harry didn't know it till that it was too late. This is Harry's song.

Time for some knowledge. Mumford and Sons have a fair bit of Christian undertones in their music, they happened to fall into mainstream because they did things like say fuck and didn't want to chokehold their music. Anyway, this song is the relationship between God and Lucifer from Lucifer's perspective. I imagine supernatural drew from actual Christianity with it, but for clarification I am not talking about supernatural. Anyway, this is Lucifer lamenting his place, his jealousy of Christ, and his pride to not want to seek the forgiveness of his Father because he's already damned himself in his own head. He's saying along the lines that God is just as flawed as he is for doing what he's done to him and at least he, Lucifer, acknowledges he's a flawed being while thinking God doesn't see His own flaws. Yet, he says he knew his heart was weak, and not to consign him to darkness, so though he's too proud to accept forgiveness, he's also both spiteful for being cast out but only because he seeks his Father's acceptance so much. Lucifer is angry and hurt in this song and is both crying out to God, and cursing His name while creating a kind of ownership over his own misery. Sort of like wearing his suffering like a badge. Also, the crawl on my belly till the sun goes down is in reference to Dante's Divine Comedy, where in order to enter Hell, one must crawl on their stomach. It all boils down to Lucifer talking like a teenage son who thinks his father hates him and can't understand why he's trying to hurt him and make him miserable, while the father hurts just as much but knows what he's doing is for the child's best and the teenager just doesn't understand yet. God is fathering through His tears, and Lucifer is bitter, also because "you gave a way out for him" referring to both Christ and man, so when we sinned we were forgiven and redeemed and Lucifer is angry like a child who thinks their sibling is the favorite so they lash out. Think that's everything... love this song.

Honestly, when I hear this song, all I can think of is SPN Lucifer about Michael and Heaven. ("Crawl on my belly till the sun goes down, I'll never wear your broken crown. I took the road, and I fucked it all the way." Of course, how he refuses to bow down to humans, and turns several into demons. "Now in this twilight, how dare you speak of grace." Perhaps that Michael and most of heaven is hypocritical as they did not bow to, nor love, humans. "Better not to breathe than to breathe a lie." Unlike how Michael and most of heaven also do not love or bow to humans, Lucifer outrightly disobeyed, refusing to even pretend. "So hold my hand, consign me not to darkness." Lucifer not wanting to go to be sent to hell by Michael.")

Love this band and just realized that this song fits perfectly to my D&D characters relationship with his father. Mother was an elf slave, father was a powerful vampire... he was born and his father was obsessed with his connection to a prophecy involving their vampiric ancestor who had to be stopped by a holy army. My character escaped but the presence of his ancestor haunts him at every turn. He’s a hexblade flavored the powers coming from his ancestors.

This song has many religious overtones...In my case I have refused to go the way my father wanted for me because of his treatment of me at the time...hence the words 'I'll never be your chosen one' 'you can't tempt me if I don't see the day'...Reference to the day of salvation/judgement. 'the pull on my flesh was just too strong...' Again Religious...Our choices of life style versus religious morals... Think about this song as an overpowering religious person trying to force something on a person/child but as that person grows they realise the imperfections of the person and want to hold them accountable. In the case of my father I believe he has a lot to answer for and I will not wear his broken crown. 'Better not to breathe than to breathe a lie'!!...' I will not speak of his sin...His values are all shot!! My heart was flawed and I knew its weakness!! I lived life!! So I crawl on my belly till the sun goes down...(Satan reduced to the position of serpent...Read Genesis for reference) ... meaning is taking the life of wickedness and hence shame... I took the road...(my road) and I fucked it all the way (did my own thing)... In this twilight (nearing of the end of days/judgement day) how dare you (in my case my over righteous father) speak of grace!! How can he talk of grace when he is bad and I am a good person...?? Ultimately the song is all about the consequences of the lives we lead...At some point we all need to make an accounting for our actions...Kneel before God and explain ourselves!!! Each should ask the question 'What kind of life did I live while I had the chance to live it??' In this twilight our choices seal our fate!!!

my interpretation is a failing relationship, they feel they cannot communicate, first verse, when they make love it feels like a lie, when I open my body I breathe a lie, the pull on my flesh was just too strong, he needs the companionship, untill he had enough and hit the road, and fkd it all the way, because she committed a sin, probably adultery, and that was the last straw. just my opinion. I listened to it like 10 times and that's what it made me feel. :)

@@minervamcgonagall8805 While you have a very good point, I'm going to have to go with either Draco or Harry. "I'll never be your chosen one." Could refernece Harry's reluctance to be this great hero and bear this burden everyone expects of him. How hes never lived a normal life, how hes always been under these expectations and all the scrutiny of his peers. The same could be said with Draco. He was chosen by the Dark Lord as punishment to Lucius to kill Dumbledore. He was chosen to start the takeover, to help the Death Eaters infiltrate Hogwarts, To kill Dumbledore, to do all these things he never wanted to. He never wanted to do any of it. And in the end, he failed with killing Dumbledore. He never was quite what his parents wanted him to be, what Voldy wanted him to be, and I doubt he was exactly who he wanted to be too. "Better not to breathe than to breathe a lie. Cause when I open my body, I breathe a lie." He knows blood purity is wrong. He knows what he, his father and his Lord are all doing is wrong. Just look at Golden Girl Granger, the literal walking contradiction to everything hes ever been taught to believe. In the 6th book, hes miserable. He wants out. He doesn't want to do any of the things hes currently doing. I think he'd rather be dead, than to be in the midst of all the chaos, of everything hes currently going through. "I'll never wear your broken crown." His father has all these expectations, all these desires to get back into the Dark Lords graces through Draco. He wants Draco to pick up the mantle, and the Dark Lord wants him to fulfill his set task. Its a broken, corrupted dead, and hes the one destined to carry it out, to wear the broken crown. The same could be said for Harry. He never believes he could be the savior Dumbledore's been training him to be. That society expects him to be. Its a corrupted cage hes living in in society, where the glass is foggy and you don't know who to trust. He'll never wear the broken crown as everyone so desperately wants of him, and he'll never be their savior (as he so believes.) Back to Draco, "The mirror shows not. Your values are all shot." He's saying how its sick, what they all believe. Its all rubbish, its all lies and they're convoluted and twisted into such ugly things. He can't look himself in the mirror anymore, he can't look and not see who he wants. His mirror shows not what he wants to be, but who he is. "So crawl on my belly till the sun goes down," he just wants to survive. He wants his and his family to make it out of this alive together, and he'll keep his head low until Voldemorts tyranny ends. With Harry, he'll keep crawling desperately to destroy the horcrux's, to defeat the evil and to keep fighting until Voldemorts reign ends. "I took the road, and I fucked it all away." Draco went down the road that was chosen for him, and he couldn't do it right. His choices led to death, led to torture and grief. He fucked up the killing of Dumbledore, he fucked up everything. "Now in this Twilight, how dare you speak of grace?" In this era now, after all Voldemort has done, he questions him. He asks himself how Voldemort could possibly speak of grace, of mercy, of being this savior to everyone after all he has done? I can go on and on, and I will if you want more evidence, but I really think this song much more suits Draco or Harry than Voldemort.
