On a recent ride, I heard a loud bang from the rear wheel after I got on the pedals after swinging out around a parking vehicle. It felt just like when you run over a pebble and that gets spit out to the side by the tire. But this time, I looked back and saw the rear wheel had a wobble in it. Closer examination found a spoke nipple had broken off inside the wheel.
As the Schwalbe Marathon Mondial tire was worn out after 3850 mi. (6200 km), I decided this was a good time to replace it. The tire had no flats in all this time on the rear of the bike.
I had to steal a spoke nipple off my touring bike wheel to repair this wheel as I couldn't find my stash of old spoke nipples. I still need to re-build the touring bike wheel due to a broken spoke.
The wheel trued up nicely, mainly just re-tensioned the spoke location and some minor adjustments to the surrounding spokes and it was as good as new.
More to come, installing and sealing a new tire...
