One of the things that I respect Steve for is his respect for safety and I think he sets a great example. I watch a channel called "Matt's off road recovery" and it is a great channel but they are always using grinders without safety glasses. As I am nearing 60 years old I know that no one is so lucky to use grinders without safety glasses and have it be a good long term practice. I've learned my lessons. I think people are better off following Steve's example FOR SURE!!

Hey Steve I’ve been a body man for 25 years and I have used every brand of panel bond adhesive on the planet, that being said, WELD THE SEAM ON TOP OF THAT SKIN!!! If you don’t you will have a read line where the seam is. Been there done that and have the scars to prove it. If you do try to bond it make sure there is NO adhesive on the outside of the panel seam before you do your bodywork over the seam. The adhesive reacts differently in the sun during heating and expansion and it WILL cause bubbles in the paint in the sun, once it cools they go away. Had that happen and now all seams get welded and I only bond door skins on the bottom and sides where the panel gets rolled over. Panel bonding a large seem like that in theory is a great idea but it doesn’t hold up to the normal flexing, expansion and contraction while driving the vehicle, and again as I said it will cause a read line. Just my two cents and personal experience. Eddie wheels 😬🧑🏻🦽👍 NJ.

Hiya Steve. The side by side shifter locations are for the K10 with the NewProcess/Mopar 833 overdrive transmission and a NP 208 transfer case. My 86 K10 stepside has this setup. 3 speeds + overdrive. It came with a Hurst OEM shifter bolted to the side of the transmission, with the side cover linkage, just like an old Charger. I think somebody swapped in the older heavy duty top loader transmission on your truck. That transmission is way bigger than the original box, prolly stonger too. My transmission bearings groan and howl quite a bit, and I really need to pull it and redo it, before I grenade it. Someday, lol.
@davesgarage3099
2 жыл бұрын
i have the same setup :).....noisy too...lol\was a special facttory order option
@WilliamTMusil
2 жыл бұрын
@@davesgarage3099 yup. Did not realize that it was a special option. I have seen a few with the same setup. There is a plan to re-bearing mine ... some day. Hopefully before it fails. Those parts are easy to come by. Gears, not so much, as they are not the same ratios as the four speeds found in mopars, but they can be found as well. The road noise from the swampers tends to drown out the transmission noise. 😀 My shifter was junk too. I was able to get the shifter rebuilt direct by Hurst. I was trying to find parts and any other information on it, and ended up contacting Hurst directly, as everybody else said there is no such Hurst shifter. Hurst looked it up, and said yes, it was an OEM shifter, and told me I could send the whole thing in to be rebuilt, at what sounded like a ridiculously low price. The cost quoted was very reasonable, so I did. They sent back essentially a new shifter. If your shifter needs service, give Hurst a call, I was very happy with that result.

An acquaintance of mine who is a body man told me he uses "cow" or ruminal magnets that he buys from a livestock store to hold parts in place before welding or during epoxy cure. They are about 2" long and look like small box beam sections and they can be laid down end to end (you have to align the polarity of course), are very powerful, and relatively inexpensive.
@johnlennon335
2 жыл бұрын
I thought they were about 3" long and look like a big pill or a bit like a CO2 cartridge. I wonder who gets the job of recovering them once they've gone through the cow?! I guess one farming job is the same as the others. I asked a farmer once "how do you handle the smell?" He said "Son, that smells like money!"
@davidcashin9194

Hi Steve Not to rain on your parade but as I am a Panel Beater or in your lingo a bumper and fender guy what you were saying about the door skin is almost right but honestly if you just turn the door over on a soft cover and work the edge from the top you would save your neck. The tape is good but hold the dolly with the larger flat part toward the edge that will help with rolling the edge. With the door gaps once you have the skin on use your TIG to tack the corners so the skin wont move and you can then use the TIG to run a bead where the gap is to big and the file it to shape easy peasy !!!. I am old school and I would have replaced the whole skin "I HATE GLUE " . The rust repairs were good but you really need to use a stack of rust sealer. One of the products we use in coastal areas on old junk is FISH OIL once you have painted the truck and it's finished you spray all the under side, inside the doors and inside the sill panels ( Rocker panel your speak) just drill a hole under the sill spray it in a use a rubber bung to seal it up and Bob's your uncle. Keep up the good work love the videos.

might as well add a leaf or two to those rear springs. Make it worth the time, and allows you to haul wood from the timber like you were kin to Ivan Swope. And it makes it more stable while pulling the trailer. Biggest drawback is it won't ride smooth without 1,000 lb of something in the back all the time. Just carry more sand tubes for winter driving! It allows you to spare some when you come across someone who just found out there fancy new vehicle is practically helpless when it's slick. Shock mounts to the frame seems to be a long standing problem (front and back) on these trucks. I had one get loose on the front of a 73 GMC. I welded it in place, as I planned to put that engine in a different truck. I hit a pothole, the part that went through the frame broke off, and was left somewhere on the Alaska Highway. Drove the remaining 500 mile with a rolling shimmy in the front end. It shows in the video I took.

14:15 Thanks Elizabeth, I nearly choke on my Pepsi when you made that _welding_ noise. Polyester and nylon are *not* to be used as a head/hair protection material.

Your opinion, , , I like your opinions my friend. You have never led us astray Steve. Sure missed you last Saturday. Sizzling hair you say ? I hate that one that gets right into an ear and over and above the discomfort and pain is the snap-crackle-pop the slag or the tiny ball of molten steel cooling in ear wax. There are benefits to wearing ear plugs eh, LOL. Elizabeth's weld is far better than many licensed welders I have had the displeasure of letting them go after a basic weld test. If she continues to like it I am sure the appearance will smooth right out. All she needs now is to keep on caring and it will come. Well my friend, this 1/2 hour slipped by in a moment or two. Thanks eh.
