Wes, I am happy no one was hurt. That being said, I used to manage a mechanic shop and worked as a boilermaker/welder too. We always had to think in terms of "how stupid can we be" when looking to make something for use by other people. It saved a lot of injuries and in the long run it was much less expensive . I know you are going the right thing in installing the new hitch system and I am sure it will work for many trouble free years.

Wes, like your dad, I'm a product of the past generation that simply accepted the risk of injury or death as part of life on the farm. As a young teen, I had the same experience as Cody, only the tractor was an old Ford 9N and there was enough space behind the axle that I avoided being crushed. Back then some tractors didn't even have draw bars some hitches were attached above the centerline of the axle. If you pull d hard enough the tractor would flip over backward. A lot of farmers died like that. Some parts of the good old days weren't that good!

I dont know who manufactures it. I used a hitch style for wagons that you back into. A guide that is shaped like a V on the tractor guides the single post on the wagon into alignment. Pintle hook design lifts the wagon tongue and the snaps it in to a locked position. A safety pin keeps it from opening. I have an old video showing it in use.

Luckily we never had many issues, but we have 3 silage wagons with these style hitches. We never run safety clips on them unless running them on the road, the clip always seems to get lost. Our wagons don't have any spring assist on them either which probably is what makes the difference. I did like that hitch pin with the bit that hinges around it though, I will have to look for some.

OLF : Get yourself a foot and half of chain and weld the pin to the wagon. It will keep the hitch pins legs in check. The farmers I once worked with said it pissed the neighbors off when they borrowed a wagon and tried swapping the pin to their wagons when halting hay. Now they bought the pin clips by the gross but you can't have it all.

I've had the same problems with pins over the years... total PITA... We've lost fertilizer applicators in the field a few times over the years, they literally hammer the living h3ll out of the pins and will bend/warp/destroy those little hair pins designed to hold the pin in the clevis... Plus, cotton wagons are very similar to your hay wagons and they required pins to hitch up and haul, and I never felt comfortable with the hair pins in them-- I always RELIGIOUSLY put the hairpin through the trailer hitch pin, but there were more than a few times I'd get to the cotton gin and find the pin gone-- rattled out, or pulling the trailer out of the field, grass or weeds or something would catch on the hair pin and rip it out, etc. I tried some of those fancier pins like you showed, with mediocre results... they're fragile, they don't hold up, and if they get in a bind or something they bend and then they're useless. I finally started experimenting with some older pins I had laying around-- usually no shortage of damaged pins around the shop-- the bails (handles) broken off of them, locking pin holes wallowed out, etc... What I found was that I can MAKE a better pin than you can BUY... What I do is, first, if the bottom of the pin head is wallered out from riding in rough or oversize holes, I slide a big flat washer over the pin up against the pin's head and weld it in place. I torch off the handle, if it still has one or part of one, and then weld on a long bolt sticking straight up from the head of the pin, this bolt (or other round steel stock) needs to be at least 6 inches long... Then I grab the torch and heat this bolt about 2 inches above the pin's head, and then bend it 90 degrees to the side. This makes a nice, strong handle for pulling the pin, wiggling it to get it in or out, etc. Then I weld a "quick link" to the side of the bolt opposite the handle just above the pin bolt head. I'm talking about one of those "chain repair links" that have the threaded part you unscrew to open them up to connect chain links together... weld the opposite side from the threaded part to the side of the bolt. Then I put a piece of regular welded link 1/4 inch or 3/8 inch chain, usually old chain I have laying around, on this quick link, along with a chain snap connector (either D-ring style or the horse halter style or dog leash style) and screw the link closed and snug it with pliers... I make the chain long enough to go COMPLETELY AROUND the hitch clevis BEHIND the pin and come back up to the top, where it clips to the chain snap connector, plus an extra few links or so to allow for various thicknesses of hitch clevises. I've been using these pins for decades and NEVER had one come loose or fall out. Sometimes I feed the chain between the upper and lower clevis plate behind the drawbar in the drawbar opening of the tongue, and clip it to the chain snap connector, and that works well too and keeps the chain up out of the way in hay and stuff, like on the baler or rake connections where the pin rides down low above the windrow. Works like a champ and cheap and easy to do. Yeah, gotta be careful hitching/unhitching wagons on inclines or hills... when working on the hills at Shiner, I always park the tractor/wagon with the front wheels turned to the high side... if the wagon rolls, it won't roll far, and it will turn uphill and keep it from taking off in a straight line downhill and ending up in the creek... same thing when getting off tractors sitting on a hillside. Chase one down a time or two to keep it out of the creek and you start remembering to do that real quick! LOL:) Later! OL J R :)

Sometimes the not so obvious things will get you pulling a trailer. I had a motorcycle popup camper on a bike. I did a springtime adjustment and shakedown cruise on the interstate doing about 70.( I don't like clunking sounds ,so I had adjusted everything, even the coupler.) On my return trip, the trailer suddenly uncoupled as I was in the leftmost of three lanes and the damn factory chain also broke. I pulled over the side and watched as my trailer went straight down the highway for about a half mile. The totally bizarre thing was watching the cars steer around the trailer and pass it on both sides as the ball stem made sparks and all kind of noise (what idiots ! ) Eventually the trailer found its way to the right breakdown lane ,the tongue hit an asphalt bump and the trailer did a perfect forward summersault and landed perfectly on its two wheels. What happened? I adjusted the coupler with no play whatsoever . Then the coupler warmed up, it seized on the ball and loosend the nut....like a big wrench. The nut then fell off . I was actually able to lash the trailer onto the hitch and take it home...slowly . The repair was a minor epoxy job on the spring mounts underneath. I now use cotter pins with the ball shaft. I still remember 25 years later watching people pass that trailer at 70mph like there was somebody still driving it and laugh . :-)

Count me in with the folks who would spring the money for some type of brakes on those trailers. 40,000-50,000 pounds is a lot of weight to be depending on the tractor brakes and the weight of the tractor to stop it. A 7410 with loader weighs perhaps 15,000 lbs? You were lucky with the two examples of close calls in this video. A fully loaded trailer going on a joy ride taking the tractor with it could have disastrous results.

Hi Wes. i would like to ask you something. Here in germany we have airbrakes on our wagons, trailers and big balers. most times on the roundbalers, too. When you take of the hoses of the airbrake, the brakes on the trailer or wagons locks automatically. Ok, to be save you have to turn a handle to lock it tight, because the airbrakes are only locking thru air pressure. When the pressure in the tank is dropping, the brakes will onlock. But for short time this is ok. What is it like on your baler? It has a hydraulic brake, as you have shown. Does it also lock automatically the brakes? I dont know this kind of brake here. And, for future safety, isnt it whise to put some kind of brakes on your trailers? If it is only a overrun brake? This kind of brake we use on our "smaler" trailers.

Hey Wes.... I constantly wonder why US tractors do not use the norm hitch systems used since 50 plus years in EU...Germany, UK...And then why do you not use the newer systems like Piton-Fix or the K80 ??? so much better then the fiddly stuff on those trailers in the US...

I did this one time on a cotton mote trailer working one Fall at a cotton Gin. It didn't break the tongue but it dug into the middle of the dirt road I was on.

I can't believe you don't have to have brakes on the trailer. in the UK it is law for any trailer over I think 2 or 3 tonnes, correct me if I'm wrong here, to have breaks. Not only is it soooo much safer but your are also going to be significantly reducing the wear on your tractors brakes.

Next time you visit the Philippines take notice of everytime a driver exits his vehicle they will look for a large rock to shove under the front or back of the tires. They do not trust the brakes on any type vehicle except motorcycles.
