I planted mine outside for the summer in soil that has some clay in it. I watered the "cups"...kept water in them all the time. I have four in the ground and they are all blooming like crazy. I wintered them over in my garage. I put them in regular potting soil and they did great all winter that way. I didn't put water in the cups over the winter because I read that if you do and they are inside, it could rot the plants. I only put water in the cups when they were planted outside. While they were wintering over in my garage I watered the soil only occasionally. They did fine without being in the sphagnum/orchid bark/peatmoss medium in the pots. I guess I am just lucky since I don't do anything particularly in the way of caring for them. I just brought them in for the winter today and planted them in potting soil like last year since they did so well for me last year. I got them in Florida about 5 years ago and they are still doing fine.

I'm so glad I watched this. I've been trying my hand at bromeliads with no luck. been planting them deep into lots of soil and watering them everyday with no luck. had no idea that they needed lots of drainage with very little soil. will remedy this problem when I get home. thanks for the video.

Thank you, very helpful, got several bromiliads in my flat, one is in hallway, no direct sunlight only shade, well, i am getting loads of light from skylight in summer and from kitchen and the living room when i leave doors wide open, so far so good. No idea if how they react to shade as i had this bromiliad here only for a month or so.

Great video! I got some pups off of my Guzmania last year and they grow really slow lol. Glad to see you using the same potting mix as I do. Thanks for sharing Brad! Love the new work bench. I can't wait to get my workspace setup at the new house.

did you re pot them just because the old pot didn't have any drainage? are you going to re pot them again/ divide them when the baby plants are growing bigger?
@BradsGreenhouse
10 жыл бұрын
Yes, I felt better drainage and better media was going to make the pups do better. I do t think I'll separate them, is rather just keep one pot full.

Thanks for another helpful video; I'm just about to re-pot my 'Marbled Rainbow' Bromeliad for the first time, and you've helped confirm a couple of things for me. Like you, I'll also be going with a clay pot... albeit one specialized for orchids with holes in the sides. I'll also be going with a similar potting mix, sans styrofoam; although, I have used styrofoam in semi-hydroponic mixes in the past without any of the problems described in someone else's response (I've never known styrofoam to "hold onto" water). One question: it seems to me that between bloom cycles would be a more optimal time to re-pot... do you think it really matters at all?

Krohvanni, Forgive me for my comment, but I LOVE Billbergias. Is your bromeliad a true billbergia? It's been 3 months. Has it bloomed? If not, this may be helpful. I know from personal experience that they prefer very, very bright light and extreme humidity. More than most bromeliads. Also, it needs to be cramped in the pot. Here are 2 cultivation tips I found in a bromeliad book I gave to my mother, "This is an easy plant to cultivate but needs a bright position if it is to flower." "Allow Billbergias to for a clump; the will flower much better." Anyway......

mainefrenchie Hi, no blooms or pups yet. I think it may be acclimatising to living south as it was bought in tropics. Thanks for the tip about a cramped pot.. It is nearly I metre tall and wide.

Krohvanni That large and no flowers yet? Oh. :( How much time would you say it has been acclimating? Your plant is most impressive in size! Congratulations on growth! Have you ever fed her with food specific for flowering plants? If you have not had flowers, it is safe to feed for flowers, not foliage. Just be VERY careful to not touch the straps. Flower food can often burn leaves.

i have a question that i havent been able to find the answer to anywhere... ive had my bromeliad for about 6 to 7 months now... its an aechmea about a month or 2 after buying it, the pretty pink flower stalk began to bloom with really pretty little bluish puple petals and all seemed good, sadly it didnt take long before the pink stalk started to dry out and die and upon investigation i found that my daughter had ripped the flower out of the center and placed it back so i wouldnt notice. its been a while now and no pups... the mother plant looks really healthy and seems to be thriving but i figured id have even just some tiny pups by now and nothing... will my plant produce pups or is it confused cine the flower was destroyed?

Not really. They have small root systems mainly used to hold on to trees or terrain. They take in water through their leaves too.

I use orchid food on anything epiphytic. From staghorn ferns to bromeliads to cigoniums I use orchid fertilizer on all of them and theory since it's for epiphytes it should help those plants as well

I have become interested in bromeliads due to a bromeliad in my front yard. bought my home 5 years ago and this very large plant was there, it wasn't until 3 months ago when we removed very large bird of paradise. Then all of a sudden a very large stalk grew from the bromeliad, many little red ( I called finger) I guess flowers then out of these came white strings. I look for baby pups but do not see any. this plant is at lease 5ft tall and very wide. I ask landscape places and showed the pictures and some didn't even know what it was. How can I find out what I can if I can do anything for this plant as I don't want it to die. I enjoyed your video as I have two small bromeliads which I have on the patio and wanted to make sure I'm watering it correctly. As you can tell I'm not very good with plants.

Hey Brad, just to let you know, the styrofoam holds onto water and rotten material and bacteria. If they stay in the pot too long, they can have the same effect as charcoal, being toxic when soaked up full with water and rot (from the bark). I have experience with this, as I helped take care of a local botanical garden's orchid greenhouse (volunteer). Their plants all had styrofoam and every last one of them had virus, bacterial infection, crown rot, black rot, all the scales, and pretty much every other pest imaginable on the whole collection. The styrofoam was always mushy and dark and stinky upon repotting. I would hate to see your plants suffer the same as this insane collection I looked after for a year.

You are absolutely right. He doesn't know about bromeliads very well. Also, the mother plants never dies. Sometimes they reflower. But Brad doesn't like people who know more than he does on a types of plants. I made that mistake on his first bromeliad video.

Thanks for the defence Happy! Like I say first thing in the video " I'm no expert on these" and happily take in everyone's opinions. I don't care in someone knows more than me about anything, I take it as an opportunity to learn something extra. These plants seem, so easy and care free and and doing great in my care. Now Frenchie, you gave me your direct opinions on another Bromeliad post last month. I thanked you for your info and options then and you even apologized for the way you posted it and worded it after. Now I see you have gone back to that thread and stirred it up again! My channel is a place where everyone's options are valued, my, yours and everyone's. Words like, "it's not opinion, it's fact" .... Really is your opinion and there are many opinions. This www.bromeliads.info/beginners-guide-bromeliad-pups/ is this websites opinion, that sadly bromeliad pups die.

***** I sent that site to my mother, with the notation that mothers do not die. However, that site was where I learned the term pup instead of off-shoot or off-set as is sometimes used when doing husbandry. (I work with hybridization of trees for disease prevention) I am so vey confused by all these people and places claiming mothers die. Could it be that no one has the patience to wait a year or so? Mothers may also continue to produce pups during a dormant period. I didn't stir anything up. You thanked me for an opinion. I didn't give you an opinion. That's why I felt so very discounted and as if you are not willing to accept any conversation about anything you are not an expert on. It seems that any place someone shares their knowledge with you, you either ignore them or blow it off as opinion. Did you ever think that someone is just trying to start a discussion with you and exchange information? Yes, I did apologize. I live in woods. With trees and bears bugs. Not people. I forget how to interact with others who aren't in my world. That is also why it has taken me this long to get back online. Cava? :)
