Always place the chicks under the hen in the dark. It works, I just did it a couple days ago with some I hatched in an incubator.

Try doing it after the estimated hatching time, and then do it during the night

I add dried, fluffed chick only a few hours old WITH its shell under mine during the day. The mom pecks the shell, then accepts the chick... my moms are very young - 8 months old and they had been sitting for 3 weeks.

Not many people post their fails. I appreciate this because I failed my first attempt at doing this too. It's nice to know I'm not the only one.

My orpington adopted 5 day old chick very easily. She was sitting on eggs for 14 days before i introduced 5 babies under her during day light...she was ready and orpington are a very easygoing breed. She raised them to independance

Why did you try to integrate week old chicks instead of 1-2 day old?

Thank you for posting!! I am trying to get a broody hen to take some chicks so it’s nice to see what to do and what not to do. Very helpful.

I heard that it is best to place the babies under the hen when she is sleeping on the nest. Then when she wakes up, she is a new 'mom'. It is the same concept as introducing a new chicken to the coop. In the morning it is just 'there'. Chickens almost go in to a stupor when they are sleeping. I've never done it myself, so.....

You put them in to soon, they set on a nest for 21 days before hatching and you should have put the chicks in the dark. I did the same epic fail. I would put fertile eggs under her and let her hatch them. Easier than baby chicks.

I think It really just depends on the hen. I recently hatched 2 chicks but unfortunately one passed away. I have two broody hens at the moment, both Marans. The single chick was 5 days old today and I introduced her to both hens , one immediately pecked her and the other seemed to accept her right away. They have been happily sitting together for around 2 hours now And I check on them regularly but all is good it seems

Please do some research before you do something like this. There are plenty of KZitem videos out there that show how to do it without putting the lives of the babies in such peril. Do it at night. Late. So the chicken is sleepy and thinking in the morning that her eggs have hatched. Also, remove 1 egg for each chick you put in. Chickens have object permanence. So if the eggs are gone but a similar number of chicks are there, she can safely assume that the eggs hatched. But a chicken sitting on only 2 eggs, and the eggs are still there, but there’s also some chicks it can easily be assumed that they are wandering from their own mother.
