I think you're reading it all wrong. I think Keith Carradine (father of actress Martha Plimpton, who started to make a name for herself as an actress as a child/in her early teens, and who appeared in a film with River Phoenix as a teen, leading to them becoming couple offscreen) was just trying to make young Brooke feel better about the scene, and more comfortable: you know "this is just pretent/ work not your real life first kiss" kind of thing. Actors and directors say these kinds of things to child actors when they're feeling self-conscious or awkward about a scene, and time is very precious on a short and expensive film shoot, so it's important to try to get child actors comfortable and able to perform their scenes well in as few takes as possible. They haven't got forever to do take after take. He was just trying to help, for the sake of everyone. Don't forget that lots of people are employed on a film set, from hairdressers to camera grips to caterers to director's assistants etc. Trying to get the job done and done well, on time, on budget, and not run over schedule etc. is on everyone's minds on a film set.

@@SY-ok2dq it’s not about ‘reading it wrong’ those are very choice words. If he lacked the capacity to explain to a child WHY she probably felt highly uncomfortable and awkward kissing an adult male then I don’t think he should have been in a position to ‘act it out’. Actors are also human beings who can choose to have professional ethics, morals, and standards - I personally would have had to opt out of kissing a child, and if that meant losing the role then so be it. There was no reason to actually show or ‘act out’ the kiss - it could have been alluded to, or a different angle/shot could have been utilised. It’s also a known fact that abusers who groom and sexually assault children will use tropes like ‘this doesn’t count’ or ‘anything I do to you doesn’t count’ etc…

I wonder how much money her mother made. They got a nice lifestyle thanks to her 'work' but was it worth it? I met a lady who had been prostituted by her parents from the age of 15 to her mid 30s (she was the worst case of codependency I've ever seen, and her parents had been physically and emotionnally abusive to her throughout her childhood, and they were churchgoers, Roman Catholics), they had become millionnaires, but she was making several suicide attempts a year and was unable to find a man who would be willing to marry her and have children with her. Only this month, a French woman was charged with pimping her 11-12 year daughter to a 70-year old man. She received 90K€ from the guy over 1 year. The guy didn't see anything wrong, he described the relationship as 'helping' that mother and her daughter, and 'treating' them. The mother didn't see anything wrong in what she was doing either, she was hoping the guy would marry her daughter once she turned 16 (by which time the guy would have been 75 - that's a 60 year age difference). The press haven't given any details about the ethnical origin of these people, but I wouldn't be surprised if the mother was of Northern African (Moroccan, Algerian etc.) origin.

You must not know what the 70s and early 80s were like! Remember that the 70s were a time of "anything goes" really, in the West, and a time that saw the rise of porn films into the mainstream (think of the film "Boogie Nights") - Times Square in NYC was I think really notorious at that time for theaters showing lots of porn films, and that's something referenced in the film "Taxi Driver", a film which also created lots of controversy for the violence and also, for Jodie Foster's portrayal of a young runaway street prostitute when she was just 12 or 13. Foster didn't have any nude scenes or any scenes where she kissed men etc. in that film, nor is it romanticized that she is a prostitute. However, a couple of years later, Foster starred in the creepy film "The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane" , in which a body double (i.e. not Foster) shot brief nude scenes as Foster's character. And her character is the target of a pedophile played by Martin Sheen, and is seen in bed with a boy her age and it's made clear some kind of sexual relationship is going on. Brooke Shields also starred in the film "Wanda Nevada" after "Pretty Baby" in which she is the kind of love interest for none other than Peter Fonda! It's a period Western I think, and Brooke appears in full make-up. Brooke was maybe 13? It was before "Blue Lagoon."

I think children should know the scientific names for all body parts and know where babies come from. Sex Ed helps prevent teen pregnancy (many Studies have proven this). You're right. It is disassociation. But, I get how she can compartmentalize how she had to behave on the job, at home, with her mother, out with her friend Michael Jackson. Different Brookes for whatever the situation called for. But that rape was disassociation. And she said she was used to it even though she used the word compartmentalize. Which means she's been abused before if she knows how to disassociate, disappear to somewhere else in her mind to not be there in that moment. That's making me feel so sad for her. I'm 4 years older than Brooke and I know how that single mother brainwashing can do damage to a daughter. I think over time with therapy she will become a new woman and a great defender of exploited children, once she breaks out of denial, goes through all of those dormant emotions. It'll be tough. She can retrain her brain.

She's not a victim & won't pretend to be, even for these types here, most under 18 or 20 who seem determined to do so constantly. & it wouldn't help to do so - & tbh it's a bit silly - they seem to think they "know" bc they've read about things on "the Internet" - tbh am amazed most of them don't spend their days hiding in the bedroom! I am only a couple years older her and I remember thinking how beautiful this girl is. She truly was a beautiful girl. I do not remember ever watching her child movies, just the Calvin Klien jean ads. I guess at my young age and innocence, I didn't realize what these people were doing to her. It's very sad. I am glad she is still here to tell her story.

This woman has been through so much. My heart breaks thinking of how isolated she must be with the pain of it all. I hope that she finds healing. Her mother also seems like a deeply damaged person also in need of healing.

I am sure her mother doesn't think she did anything wrong. She needs her eyes opened.

Thank you Karine. While watching the section about her mother I had a revelation about my own mother. You helped me answer a question I had about my mom's bizarre behavior. I had been struggling with it for 20 years, now I have the last piece of the puzzle that completed the picture. Thank you!

How in the hell do these adults/parents get away with this? There is absolutely no doubt this is child pornography! She was groomed by her mother from 5 days old to be sold for her “beauty” and at 10 for her “body!” You gotta know it started before 10. I can understand that because Brooke has never known anything different, she doesn’t see it the way we do. She seems to have Stockholm syndrome! It’s just heartbreaking knowing there are all these agencies in the world/Hollywood that do this and get away with calling it art!! Absolutely disgusting!!

I do feel for Brooke, I grew up during her modeling and acting years. She is a year older than me. I remember the Calvin Klein vividly. I always thought that her mom was weird and crazy. What I don’t get is how Brooke is glossing over everything. I heard and interview with her talking about pretty baby, and that she said the “we have to remember the time that this took place”…I was floored, because I remember the 70’s a little differently, there were laws to protect kids back then. The industry is still the same, just a little more covert.

The reason she’s glossing over everything is because she’s in denial of how terrible it was for her mother to do this to her. She has simply tried to justify what happened so she can continue to see her mother in a favorable light

It’s not easy to make peace with your past, especially publicly. As a 70s baby, yes there were laws, but it was still much more acceptable. Molesters were creepy strangers in trench coats not family or friends known to your parents. And if you don’t have a responsible adult in your life, you’re screwed

@@thefirm4606 Totally agree. I still remember all the “flashers” in L.A. During the 70’s

@@thefirm4606 I had bro's older than me that I found out later in life ran interference for their baby sis. They weren't gonna have me violated as our dad hd passed. I didn't know at the time, but am grateful. I was naïve and didn't know why they kept certain family and friends AWAY from me.

Thank you so much for posting this- no one wants to talk about this subject and it’s only getting worse- we need to expose those who exploit children

A bit like Elizabeth Taylor, who was also a strikingly pretty baby (as was her brother), and simply got more beautiful as she grew up, at every stage of her life.

My heart breaks for poor Brooke 😢those people were soulless , her mother being the flag bearer of all the evil things done to her . Being disassociated from her body was another way to cope with the trauma. 💔
