One of my close college friends was going home for Christmas break. She was originally booked on a United flight to New York the next day, but decided to move her flight up a day to surprise her parents. Sadly, she was killed in the crash. All her friends and professors had a difficult dealing with the death of such a kind and gentle classmate, but especially her parents who could not accept that she was on this ill fated flight, a day earlier then they expected her arrival home. She was a beautiful human being. I will never forget this beautiful soul.

I'm from Chicago and was the same age as Steven. That night his name came over the news. For whatever reason I've been disturbed by the entire event the remainder of my life.

I lived on sixth street between 8th Ave & PPW. Methodist Hospital went from 8th Ave to 7th Ave along sixth Street. It has now expanded encompassing Sixth & Seventh Streets, as well as all of Sixth & Fifth Streets from 8th Ave to Seventh Avenue. I was attending St. Saviors Elementary School. I can still recall the noise of that plane crash. We were all dismissed and told to go immediately home. My oldest brother was a freshman at St. Augustine HS. The class that he was in faced up Sterling Place. His instructor, a Christian Brother, had the class dive under their desks fearing that the plane might hit the school! What a frightening day that was! I remember it was theorized that the pilot was “hoping” to bring the plane down in the Prospect Park sheep meadow but I think that was just journalistic ideation. I have seen the memorial plaque of Stephen on the wall to the left of the entrance to the chapel in the lobby of Methodist Hospital many many times. I was born in that hospital in 01/25/1950! Before the massive expansion, every spring I remember watching the new graduating class of nurses emerging from the nursing school/dormitory on the corner of Sixth Street & 8th Ave. wearing their white uniforms & blue woolen capes! Later they returned with their heads now wearing their new nurses caps! Oh nowhere better than the real Park Slope back then. Going sledding in the park, riding the carousel at the zoo, roller skating at the Ninth Street playground or having an ice cream soda at Pat Kenny’s at the corner of 5th Street & 7th Ave.

This was considered the worst air crash in history, until what happened at Tenerife March 27, 1977.

The day of the crash, I was in third grade at Our Lady of Good Counsel school in Tottenville, Staten Island, about 4 miles from Miller's field. My Mother and many of the other students' Mothers deluged with phone calls the school principal, Sister Mary Ellen.

I remember it so very well. It was on the first day of me becoming an Auxiliary fireman. I had graduated the day before the accident. I was assigned to Engine Company 280. I was later transferred to Engine Company 216 and then to Engine Company 229. I was promoted to Auxiliary Lieutenant and transferred to The Community RELATIONS Bureau at Pier A and North River at the quarters of Marine Company 1. A few years later my biggest fire was at THE MORGAN LUMBER YARD in Brooklyn New York. FDNY had to ask for permission to use the SUPER PUMPER SYSTEM since it was a demonstration unit for the fire department to purchase. Back steps and roofless cabs on the fire apparatuses.

We lived in New Dorp. Heard a loud noise. I was 4 at the time. My mom put me and my brother in the car and drove to what was Miller Field. She did not expect to see the carnage. Because we didn't know what happened at the time. She told us not to look. But being kids we did. I'll never forget that day and those who were lost. It shaped me early to appreciate life and to pray for those who lost theirs way too soon

I’m so glad I found your channel. I live in Long Island, but I rarely get a chance to go into the city I was born in Brooklyn and lived on 17th street. It’s so sad that the governor destroyed NY. It will never be the same again. Blessed to have been born there. So sorry to hear about your loss, their are no words anyone can come up with to make that better. I lost mine 8yrs ago, he was in the Marine Corp. Big hug from me to you. ❤️

I wasn’t even born when this happened. Both planes collide and it crashed in both Staten Island and in the Park Slope section of Brooklyn. That was long before 9/11 came along which was 41 years later. I still remember 9/11 when both planes hit the twin towers of the old World Trade Center and came crashing down one by one, and I still missed the twin towers so bad. I still remember the twin towers since I was a kid right up until I was 23. The last time I saw the Twin Towers was on my birthday, September 5th where I went back north and remained here a week before tragedy struck.

I remember this crash vividly as a 12 year old. I was going to see a tutor that was near the crash site... saw the wing of the airplane leaning up against the building when I was on the bus... I remember a boy about my age, Stephen, who survived the impact but died later. What an awful day. The plane narrowly missed St. Augustine's school.
