Chris “Mad Dog” Russo had Mike Schmidt on High Heat a few years ago. As Russo talked about how Schmidt and George Brett were number 1 and 1A in terms of all-time best third basemen, Schmidt quickly told him, “there is one guy you forgot to mention, and that is Brooks Robinson.” Schmidt went on to say “Brooks is sort of like the father of third basemen.” Mike has the offensive numbers; Brooks has the defensive numbers and one can even argue the postseason numbers. But you can tell that Mike has a tremendous amount of respect for Brooks. “He put third base on the map, Brooks Robinson.” - Mike Schmidt

There won't be many like Brooks Robinson for multiple reasons, one being there are no one team players anymore because the game has changed, there is no longer any loyalty. Teams aren't loyal to cities and players aren't loyal to teams or put another way the only bond between 3 parties are contracts. Another reason is Brooks was the peak of fielding his position and couldn't have been improved upon, just watch his footwork it is without fault.

Three things made Brooks unlike any other 3rd baseman defensively: 1) Cat-like reflexes 2) GREAT release on his throws--(fastest ever getting the ball out of the glove and making the throw IMHO) 3) Most of all--NOBODY fielded the bunt like Brooks--NOBODY!! (Earl Weaver always pointed out that every other 3rd baseman who attempted the bare-hand pickup on the bunt had to take a slight step in back of the ball and sort of "gather himself" prior to making the throw. Brooks would come in full-speed with his lead foot PARALLEL to the ball and subsequent pickup/release all in ONE motion. There's never been a 3rd baseman before or since who could field the bunt like Brooks--you couldn't lay one down on him--no chance!!)
@donr6705
2 жыл бұрын
nyterpfan, you sound as if you saw Brooks play for many years, because you are absolutely correct on all three points. You can't teach "reflexes," and advanced metrics don't take into account "time from catch to release" etc. That's one reason (of many) why they're so woefully inadequate - junk science, if you will - especially in trying to measure defense. I hope you get a chance to read and enjoy the seven-part serial I wrote about Robinson (see above). You're exactly the type of person I had in mind when writing it. Cheers, DR

As these clips show, there has perhaps never been a ballplayer with more intense focus and presence of mind than Brooks. Part of his value was in having made even fewer mental mistakes than physical errors (which were rare). He had an extremely high baseball IQ. He was never caught unawares by the developing situation and was a lock to make the correct split-second decision. His defensive plays were jaw-dropping and he was a reliable clutch hitter. Truly he was one of the greatest athletes of all time in the entire realm of professional sports.

I may have witnessed the most miraculous an unbelievable play by Brooks I believe it was 71 or 72 to it was at home memorial and Brooks actually made three errors in a row in one inning two errors on one play a Fielding play and then he threw the ball into right field trying to get the guy at second. I believe it was the very next play that he made another fielding error. The stadium went silent. Prove to me right then and there the guy was human. And when everything was said and done he still won the gold glove at the end of that year. Amazing!!!

There are so many things I could say about each play here, but I’ll limit it to one. Go to 8:40 in the video (sorry, I don’t know how to direct link it). Robinson purposefully waited for the third bounce … which was a terrible hop, right off the corner of the grass where it meets the dirt (you may need to watch this segment 5 times to really see it, but the ball came up at about a 45-degree angle). Somehow, Robinson adjusted for that, and the time interval from when the ball hit his mitt, and when the umpire called the runner out, was about 1/2 second. It went down in the books as an “Assist,” but to this day (and I saw it on TV in 1970), it’s an unbelievable play to me.
