I remember the "Wish Book" for Sears as well. My catalogs are from the late 70's and early 80's, but I still scanned the video games, and even the toys into the late 80's. But as a kid I remember my 🔦 flashlight, hiding under my blankets looking at all the stuff. I loved Tyco racing and I really loved my Atari. Hell I even had E.T.. These catalogs are a piece of my childhood I won't ever forget. Throughout all the bummer parts, even in May, June, and July of the following year. I'd still scan them in prep for the upcoming book...lol. Just awesome times in somethimes very difficult situations. THANKS for a great memory. During this "issue", there are so many depressing things we see constantly, but this was a fun memory. Great video.

Always enjoyed the toy catalogs when I was a kid. Of course, since I'm 58 that was a while ago :) I can remember coming home from school in the late 60s-early 70s and finding them in the front room. Usually Sears and Penney's catalogs and going through them and wishing for about half the stuff in the toy section (that's why they were referred to as "wish" books :)). Those are highly sought after these days....I found a Sears toy book from Fall/Winter 1972 (would have been 10 then) at an antique flea market a couple of years back for 8 bucks...instant nostalgia trip! I've got one other toy catalog (Penney's from 1993) as well as a few Spring/Summer catalogs from the 70s. Around 1976-77, in the electronics sections you can find early video game systems from Sears and RCA. I was 32 in 1994, but it's still a fun nostalgia trip..except by then it was me working in a local department store and seeing what toys we carried back then :)

My fondest memory of that place was when I was a teen and knew someone that worked there so I was somehow able to stack three separate 15% discounts which resulted in a 38% discount on an awesome 50-disc changer with dual cassette deck, remote control, ability to program 24 track playlists, an alarm, and a couple 60-watt speakers. I'd just bought a really nice Sony VCR a couple weeks before that too. That time in your life when you're a teen and finally have your first job where you get real hours but don't yet have bills devouring 70% of your income is such an exciting time.

Thanks for the great trip down memory lane. My go-to Christmas catalogs in the 90s were Sears, Toys R Us, and two regional stores, Mill's Fleet Farm and ShopKo (rip). I'd spend most of my free time around the holidays circling practically everything in hopes that Santa would maybe get lucky with one or two. (I usually ended up with a Tiger Toys "system", of which I had many). Power Rangers was totally my jam but never had the money for the more exotic models. But I loved the Tiger Toys game, played it every morning on the way in to school! I'm surprised this catalog didn't feature Lego, though maybe '94 was still a bit early for it in the US?

@MrFarnanonical
3 жыл бұрын
That's not really what they were charging so much for. They charged those prices because a rom cart is actually a circuit board with chips. Sometimes they had co-processors. You were paying for hardware. In Japan when they released the Famicom disc system, you could buy Famicom games for like 5 dollars. That's because a disc was just a piece of plastic and some magnetic tape. kind of like a cassette tape. Remember how much better SMB3 looked compared to SMB1? well, that's because it had extra banks for more memory and it had a co-processor, it wasn't that they got so much better at making games, they had more memory and computing power, If you recall games like mario 2, the megaman games and even Metroid, none of those games could scroll horizontally and vertically at the same time. Mario 3 could though, that was because it had a special chip to do just that.

But for that time it totally blew our minds. It had some little fun games on it too that you could play with each other: like this weird fighting game where you could create faces and have them "fight" each other (it was really pushing 1 button and the faces would shoot each other). Again you had to be sitting close and you each had to have it. We would have sleepovers and stay up all night sending messages to each other and playing it!! Such good memories
