I'm Chinese and came from China. I grew up in San Francisco for over 30 years. A lot of the traditional Chinese people who lived in Chinatown of San Francisco are very uneducated and racist. They lack the education to see logic. Most of the schoolmates who grew up with me in Chinatown would leave the area once they went off to college and never really wanted go back to Chinatown. Why? Most of them know what it is like to live around those who are uneducated and unwilling to accept logic or change. Bruce was an educated person who did not see race as an issue. Bruce is great in so many ways!
@foreveragainOK

Bruce was not a racist that's for sure. Even though he grew up in Hong Kong during the hard Japanese times, when he lived in Seattle his best friend was Taky Kimura; he almost married a Japanese American girll; his first student was a black guy, he had students from all ethnicities. In Los Angeles his instructor was Dan Inosanto, a class act all the way. I would hope that in a real bio, they would focus on some of these good traits of Bruce. Don't make him a saint, and show the bad parts, too.
@foreveragainOK

I agree that one of Bruce's best traits is that he really accepted people no matter what their background. Even though as a kid he baited British boys, when he came to America, he had friends and students of all ethnicities. Even though growing up in Japanese occupation 1940s, when in Seattle, Bruce proposed to a Japanese American girl; his best friend there was a Japanese- American, Taky Kimura -- who became chief instructor at Bruce's school in Seattle. In Los Angeles, his good friend Dan Inosanto and chief instructor, was from Philippines.

Lol all these people saying “he was an actor, not a fighter” real martial artists don’t go around picking fights, they train for self defense. Being the rich movie star that he was, it’s not difficult to see why not too many people were able to pick a fight with him in the first place.

@@vathanaknop124 What i have in my hand to say "Bruce Lee was a fighter"? Nothing, I do not have anything that proof his ability in a real fight against a not compliant opponent. It is not written anywhere that being a Martial Artist implies being also a fighter. This is an assumption of the community that supports Bruce Lee beyond its merits. In modern age the only way to test fighting skills with Martial Arts is to participate in sports competitions. All are phenomena at home or in the backyards.

@Nic777 Any argument in favor of Bruce lee can be refuted with as many logical considerations. For every favorable testimony there is someone who claims the opposite. Memory is not reality because it changes over time and is susceptible to interpretation. This is the reason why the story writes starting from the official documents and not from opinions or interviews. If we adopt the logic with which we support Bruce Lee, then we should all admit the truthfulness of the bible, the gospels, god and jesus. There are pages, interviews and testimonies, even an organization (The Church). What does Bruce and Jesus have in common? The blind faith of their supporters. They want to believe and any logical argument contrary to their ideas, they will not consider it. Bruce Lee is not a persons, it is a myth that has become a Legend. You can't even imagine how much fake information about his life is being spread by his fans. I could list you by answering you point by point with real data. why is this happening? Why would anyone deny such an important cultural operation? Nobody would benefit. Those who tried to claim that Lee was only an actor and a good martial artist but not a fighter were attacked by the American media. Just think of the differences between Tarantino and Shannon Lee. A cultural movement revolves around Lee that nobody is going to destroy. And no one would have the utility to do so.

@Nic777 Musashi's life is often confused with the legends born about him in the centuries after his death. The documents relating to his biography are fragmented and many have been lost. For his biographers it is "relatively" simple to retrace his life until the duel with Kojiro, while it is more difficult to find reliable sources on what he did next. Sufficient information about his old age is found. Certainly it is known that he was a painter, and some of his works remain. The story is based on documents. The memory on opinions, memories and manipulations. Train again bud.

Aside from the dumb depiction of Wang Jack Man in that last Way of the Dragon movie ridiculously standing in as the discount Yoda that tells Bruce Lee he's "Not with the Way" or some bullshit like that, the motivation for the fight in real life was completely selfish on Jack Man's part. Wan Jack Man wanted Bruce Lee to stop teaching martial arts to non-Chinese. And the people that wanted to hurt Bruce Lee were in a whole slew of *Chinese* posse from both China and Taiwan. It's like we can't have anything nice, because some of us in our demographic is going to try to screw it up while they are too busy being sour grapes and jealous babies.

WJM had only recently arrived from Hong Kong. He was 5; 10" and weight about the same as Bruce. He was a northern stylist, ie, long range and kicking. He was egged into the fight because mostly by David Chin. Chin was in his corner and says that WJM lost and ran away. At the time, Bruce's conditioning was not the super fit one we all know. I've read Polly's book. He reports that Linda has 1/ a top reputation for integrity 2/ she is quiet and unassuming. He has a good explanation for the mix-up of the WJM mess. She writes that the challenge letter included 'no teach other races' clause. However, the letter was in Chinese, which she didn't read. More likely is that when she asked what was the reason for the fight, Bruce said, "Well, sweetheart, it's because they don't want me teaching white people." If you read Polly's book, it makes more sense. At the time, white people were already students of kung fu. Jesse Glover in Seattle said that he couldn't find a kung fu instructor willing to teach him (he's black); he became Bruce's first student.

James Lee, Bruce's friend and instructor in Bruce's Oakland school: when they got home that night, James' son recalls "Uncle Bruce and Dad were happy, and Dad said Uncle Bruce had won the fight." Very doubtful the son made this story up, or that his dad would lie to him. Further, Linda Lee was the other witness. It was basically WJM running around, and Bruce was not in the best of condition, and he was embarrassed at his conditioning. From then on, he began to train really hard for years, eight hours a day sometimes. Joe Lewis said at times they would train from the morning to 11 at night.

I've just completed Matthew Polly's book. A very good read. He spent five years in the writing, interviewing 100 people. He has extensive citations. For example, he clears the air on the Wong Jack Man fight: 1. Bruce appeared in a San Francisco theatre and downgraded the classical martial artists. Many took his remarks to be either a/ a challenge or b/ advertisement for his school. One of the guys in the audience was David Chin. 2. Chin was the instigator and with two of his buddies went to see WJM, who just arrived from Hong Kong and working as a waiter in San Francisco Jackson St. restaurant. WJM was not at the Lee 'challenge' but the three guys convinced him to compose a letter to Bruce with WJM signing. Chin then drove to Bruce's Oakland school and delivered the letter. "He was very cocky, putting his feet up on the desk. When he read the letter, he said OK." 3. Chin was the main instigator and arranger. Bruce's only condition was that the fight be at his school. Chin then played both sides, saying that Wong was saying this about Lee and then that Lee was saying this about Wong. When the day arrived, Bruce was very mad. Polly notes that only reading and fighting relaxed him. As Dan Inosanto has also said, "To Bruce, a fight was a great experience." "Bruce would fight or spar anyone." 4. Polly then lists the names of the people there. On Lee's side was James Lee (whose wife had recently died, so of course Bruce was also at an emotional low, since he and Linda were staying at James' home, with Linda taking care of James' two kids) and Linda. On WJM's side was Chin and his three friends. Later, WJM would say that he really didn't know these guys, and that he felt like being set up. 5. The fight lasted about three minutes. Both Linda and David Chin say that WJM literally ran, after spending some time backing up and deflecting Bruce's attacks (BL was using basic Wing Chun, which was fine when the opponent engaged; but not so good when the opponent did not). And then WJM ran into one door to an adjacent room and exited out another door to the main floor (Linda and Chin both say this), and then WJM was tripped up by some display cases (the place had been a furniture store) and couldn't extricate himself. Bruce had also been hitting WJM's back of head while chasing him. As WJM was trapped, Bruce yelled, "Do you give up?" But WJM didn't reply, and he and the others left. Chin said in the car ride back to San Francisco, nobody talked. Also, a Ben Der, a Lee friend said that he went to SF Chinatown to gauge the mood. Before the fight, it was the talk of the week, everyone thought it would be a major event. But Der said the mood in Chinatown was quiet: "I then knew that Bruce had won." 6. James' son writes that when 'Uncle Bruce and he returned home, they were in an upbeat mood, so he also knew that Uncle Bruce had won. If I remember, I think Greglon Lee said that his father told him that Bruce had won. If true, I doubt a father would like to his son. Linda said she was never worried at all and relaxed. 7/ Polly also reports on some propaganda after the fight,, which led to more confusion. In conclusion, his evidence is very strong. While others have written about the fight, there were only four witnesses on WJM's corner, and two on BL's corner: both leading witnesses concur that WJM lost, and lost embarrassingly. But as Polly points out, he can understand that WJM ran, fearing for his life. It was fight or flight response. As Mike Tyson has said, "Everyone has plans, until they're hit in the mouth." When he was hit by Bruce, his plans went out the window. I thank Matthew for finally clearing the air.

The idea that Bruce Lee was the first to begin teaching kung fu to non-Chinese is not correct. Grandmaster Wong Ark-yuey began teaching non-Chinese in the mid-to late 1950s in Los Angeles. His original studio was on Ord Street in Chinatown. Sifu Wong was threatened by some in the Chinese community for teaching kung fu but totally disregarded them. He would always say, "I'm not going to live forever so I want to pass on what I know to students who want to learn." As long as the student was willing to learn he would teach him/her. Sifu Wong knew Bruce and Linda Lee. In fact, he had a photo of the family in his studio. He would always smile when he talked of the children.

Bruce Lee was such an amazing guy, exceptional human being, he looked so effing cool in those movies, he just had this unique look. I loved his body shape, that slim, sleek figure with those impressive lats of his, and his hair in Enter the Dragon and Game of Death are is best ever look i think. Its great to see Jackie talk about his friend and to see the admiration he had for him. If he had lived longer theres no doubt they would have made some great movies together. I just love Bruce Lee practically as much as i love my own family, my own brothers and its weird cause i never even met him, he died a while before i was even born. He was a truly great man, he was spiritual, he had no ego, and to do what he did, sharing martial arts with the western world was a truly great and compassionate thing he did. Especially at a time when there was much racism, he helped bring western and Asian people together.

I'd take that with a grain of salt. The so-called fight with Wong Jack Man. For several reasons...punch that landed near or on WJM's eye?? A punch to near the forehead region could end up fracturing one's fingers or hand. Mike Tyson broke a finger punching some one in some confrontation on the street. And, if the Chinese Kung Fu master truly wanted Bruce to stop teaching non-Chinese they could have made it definite. (e.g. have a few guys jump him, Could have handicapped Bruce or even killed him). Sending one man would be a waste of time. Could have even paid some homeless person $10 and given him a Happy Meal and a gun. So easy. How badly did they REALLY want Bruce to stop?? Not very. Why give up in making him stop after 1 alleged try with WJM?? Never happened.

Growing up as a kid I used to watch Bruce Lee films over and over again practised his moves from all his films from his first film big boss to enter the dragon, never had any fights because I was too scared when it really came to it this one time I got brave this older kid whacked me at juniors school I threw a punch with a bruce Lee stance after and hit him in the throat by accident the teachers told.me off and called both our parents in I was made out to be the bully and they asked where did you learn to fight like that I said Bruce Lee films that day my dad beat me with a stick at the time it killed I remember crying for an hour. Thanks Bruce you got me beaten with a stick!! 😂😂😂

Yeah, if Bruce had lived, maybe they would've been the first Expendables. They could've brought in Dan Inosanto, Steve McQueen, James Coburn, Bob Wall and of course Mr Williams and Roper (if he wasn't busy with the girls).

My how things can turned around . Yea linda said the fight between them was 5 minutes or something like that . Another spectator said it last like 25 minutes and neither one wanted to land that fatal blow . I’m chalking it up as a stalemate

@@lacampbellmd1 My money is on Linda than some anonymous “random spectator”. Knowing the Chinese community mindset. They would have demanded a rematch rather than giving in to Bruce Lee teaching non Chinese students.

@GazGuitarz

Yes, I believe Linda too, however there are still some puzzling aspects to the story of the fight between Wong Jack Man and Bruce Lee. This is the first time I've heard Linda speak on the matter. Another article that I discovered awhile ago states that Bruce hit WJM when he bowed to Bruce before the fighting was to have begun. (possibly why Linda mentions that there were no formalities before the fight...to disprove such a story) It also states Bruce was disappointed by how long it took him to win the fight using his Wing Chun and that he was impressed by parts of WJM's style. Witnesses saw WJM the next day and the only apparent damage to him was a small cut from where Bruce is alleged to have initially hit him. In both of the stories that I have heard, Bruce did not lose the fight. Linda's story has Bruce chasing WJM all over the place, whereas the other story has Bruce frustrated with how long it took him to win the fight using Wing Chun style. According to the article, Bruce wrote a letter to WJM's Grand Master in Hong Kong Ma Kim Fung who turned him away, however Bruce Lee found and convinced GM Shui Hon Sang to teach him. GM Shui Hon Sang was an older classmate of GM Ma. GM Shui Hon Sang taught Bruce Lee at least two sets, Kung Lick Chuan and Jie Chuan (Jeet Kuan). Here's a link to the article: kungfulosophy.wordpress.com/2013/03/21/bruce-lee-martial-arts-pioneer-or-arrogant-street-fighter/ In 1974 I was privileged to be instructed by GM Shui Hon Sang when he visited our associated Shoalin Kung Fu Academy in Brisbane Australia. He spoke no English except for the word "good" however he was accompanied on his visit by his daughter Josephine who could speak enough English to get by. Through Josephine GM Shui Hon Sang told us that Bruce Lee had only had two Kung Fu teachers in Hong Kong, with GM Hon Sang being his second. He mentioned nothing about the WJM fight nor indeed anything about how Bruce Lee came to be his student. I still have the newspaper clippings and Academy photos of his visit and of him instructing us. It was big news at the time. Cheers!

@@koleroputakoss8660 Bruce Won, Jack Man Won in a way, a draw, the fight was called, neither one could best each other. Bruce trained his whole body so hard, he was muscled everywhere. He did some extreme( too much weight) Good Mornings compound lift w/o warming up, on his 8th rep..... pop!! Burst fractured his L4 vertebrae and Sacrum nerves were damaged Bruce was trying to manage the pain, but had to go to the hospital, was told he would need assistance walking, could not high kick anymore or do flips. Bruce was forced to rest for 6 months, students stopped coming for training because Bruce was not there, no income...that is why Bruce closed the school.. Bruce had already learned Kung Fu from his uncle, but was interested in Wing Chun, western boxing. And later Philipino boxing, Karate, Taekwondo and Thai boxing, and leaning Nunchaku was his passion, to incorporate other arts together. After not being able to finish off WJM quick enough, Bruce decided Wing Chun alone was not efficient for him. W/o the fight between BL and WJM, we would not have JKD and MMA!!
