Great. This is what brought me in as a kid….for all its craziness it ties up in the end… he didn’t know what it was about…consciously…but unconsciously obviously he did.

He wrote this when he was 22, and by his own admission, has no idea what it’s about. Brilliant!

My favourite version. An early example of the fledgling songwriting genius we were going to behold in the years to come.

This was played in Cardiff, Wales UK last night. It was great to hear live and Bruce still feels it, of course.

So amazing 50 years ago Bruce was writing songs like this that I just heard for the first time several weeks ago and thought it was brand new. His music timeless. Love you Bruce!!

Springsteen played this, along with (Hard to be a) Saint in the City and Growing Up in a 'right off the street ' audition when he got to hear the magic words: 'You get to be on Columbia Records.'. Have loved Bruce and appreciated his poetry and passion since late 1970s when introduced to his music by my older brother. (Sidenote: If you haven't listened to Bruce tell his own story in his own voice in the audiobook of 'Born to Run' -- what are you waiting for?? It's a rare gem of a memoir in so many ways.)

I was the same. I'm 49 now, introduced to the Boss by my older brother. I discovered this song on a bootleg collection I bought in a record store in New York 20 years ago. I remember when he played in Slane Castle in Ireland in 1984. My brother went, it was massive news at the time. I didn't get to see him live until 1994. What a show that was

Thanks for sharing this version! It’s wonderful. I was listening to country music back in the day. I rediscovered Bruce a couple of years ago, thanks to a friend, and I’ve been having a blast making up for lost time ever since. I love this song (along with so many). It’s terrific to hear this original!

Much better than the new one. Less upbeat. This version would fit perfectly to old westerns.

Wish they put demos like this on Spotify. Maybe on a Letter to You Deluxe Edition? Would love to have these versions closely available Also feel so blessed i got to hear this song live. Will never forget that night. They (Bruce with E Streat Band) played it while it was raining hard.

There's a light on yonder mountain And it's callin' me to shine There's a girl over by the water fountain And she's askin' to be mine And Jesus is standing in the doorway In a buckskin jacket, boots and spurs so fine Says, "We need you, son, tonight up in Dodge City 'Cause there's just too many outlaws Tryin' to work the same line" Now if Jesus was a sheriff and I were a priest If my lady was an heiress and my mama was a thief If papa rode shotgun on the Fargo line There's still too many bad boys Tryin' to work the same line Well sweet Virgin Mary runs the Holy Grail saloon With a nickel she'll give ya whiskey And a personally blessed balloon And the Holy Ghost is the host with the most He runs the burlesque show Where they'll let you in for free And they hit you when you go Mary's serving Mass on Sunday And she sells her body on Monday To the bootlegger who paid the highest price He don't know he got stuck with a loser She's a stone junkie, what's more she's a user She's only been made once or twice By some kind of magic If Jesus was a sheriff and I was the priest If my lady was an heiress and my mama was a thief And papa rode shotgun on the Fargo line There's still too many outlaws Tryin' to work the same line Well things ain't been the same in heaven Since big bad Bobby came to town He's been known to down eleven Then ask for another round Me, I got scabs on my knees From kneeling way too long It's about time I played the man Took a stand where I belong Yeah, forget about the old friends and the old times There's just too many new boys Tryin' to work the same line Well, if Jesus was a sheriff and I were the priest If my lady was an heiress and my mama was a thief And papa rode shotgun on the Fargo line There's just too many outlaws Tryin' to work the same line Well there's a light on yonder mountain And it's calling me to shine There's a girl over by the water fountain She's asking to be mine Jesus is standing in the doorway Six guns drawn and ready to fan Said, "We need you tonight son, up in Dodge City" Told him I was already overdue for Cheyenne Yeah, if Jesus was the sheriff and I was the priest If my lady was an heiress and my Mama was a thief And Papa rode shotgun on the Fargo line There's still too many bad boys Tryin' to work the same line If Jesus was the sheriff and I was the priest If my lady was an heiress and my mama was a thief And papa rode shotgun on the Fargo line There's still too many bad boys Tryin' to work the same line Yeah, if Jesus was the sheriff and I was the priest

Thank you Chris, for the lyrics. My hearing is still spot on, but I don’t see well anymore & it’s amazing how much one sense depends upon the other. GBU for making time to do this. I just read the lyrics to make sure I didn’t miss anything. Great job. ~

Love this. I just heard the new version, it's nice but this has real in it. It's not a look back with power, gained through time, its real magic with nothing but the moment and the hopes of a future. Turns out he was right. The new version has none of that. Power but not magic.

It's only a remix if you could separate the vocals and the piano and then change the levels and eq for each track. I'd call this a "new remastered edit" 😊
