I listened to this album one night, lost between twelve and thirteen years of age. It came in my Mom's boyfriend's monthly tape selections and she opened it up and it didn't get sent back. I remember the depression and melancholy of my pre-teen angst and how I could feel that there was so much in that music... but I was just too young to know. Twenty-five years later and I still find myself listening to it late into the evening, especially on long, lonely drives. I remember everyone thought this album was wasted effort but as I travel my own journey through this Tunnel of Love I know more with each year that it is one of the most honest and brilliant depictions of real love. Novelty is one of the defining characteristics of greatness. Bruce has always been able to write his music from his own heart and to share that unflinchingly with the world is simply amazing. Thanks, Bruce for sharing your heart so that others might not feel so alone in theirs.

Nice, Christian, I get your connection with the song and that's the magic gift of music, it takes us places with little regard for time. You're there in the instant. Nice share, travel safe............

Given so many great albums on Bruce's resume, I feel the Tunnel of Love LP is very underrated. Music like this seems to impact on so many, including me, in great ways. Whether you are with someone, or 'when you're alone', Bruce-muse is the best.

I listen to so much stuff I wouldnt know where to start. This album is truly underrated..perhaps its that production level that is on one hand minimal and in another way to polished ? so why then is it so damn good? I think it comes down to song writing and execution. These songs are just simply great compositions. Springsteen is without doubt a the great American song writer

Tunnel of Love ..... one of the greatest albums in the Springsteen library. No fan should be wothout this one. My personal favorite is One Step Up, the lyrics are haunting if you happen to be married about one year.

"Thats got me out here on this spooky old highway tonight Is it the cry of the river With the moonlight shining through That aint what scares me baby What scares me is loosin you" And "I woke up in the darkness scared and breathin and born anew It wasnt the cold river bottom I felt rushing over me It wasnt the bitterness of a dream that didnt come true It wasnt the wind in the grey fields I felt rushing through my arms No no baby it was you " Those lyrics give a guy in love chills.

It's hard to believe that I listened to this knowing I was loosing the love of my life. Then after trial and tribulation she is now my wife but long distance. I am a man that has been bittered by the past but now I can say that love lasts. Do not give up and stay strong out there. We will all emerge victorious from that cold river bottom. We will then find love.

Great song from a Great album, saw Bruce in DC during his Tunnel of Love Tour in "88"? I could tell this tour was something personal especially with his on stage interaction with Patti, Bruce married Patti later on! He played Valentines Day and after listing to his lyrics I realized I had none of those feelings in my marriage! I moved back to Texas and after a few years we got divorced! I hear this song and think of that concert and wonder why my wife even bought those tickets? She wasn't a Springsteen fan and only heard of his music after I bought The Tunnel of Love album? Hell maybe she felt the same way? Been listening to Bruce since 73-74 before the "75" Born to Run Album! But this Album and song is still my favorite!

i actually really like the tempo of this live version and its just so amazing with only piano so that the lyrics can truely come alive. I just heard it today sort of by accident.. i have all of his songs on playlist and playlist set on random and most songs i know but today it was valentines day turn i guess and it really cought my attention. This song is really special. Amazing!

I love orchestrated albums and I think Bruce did a fantastic job of arranging the songs. The first song seems to be in the first person and reflects his attitude at the beginning. Then with each song we see the journey of a young man's heart. I love how this song ends the album. It seems that through all of the emotion and fear, he finally finds absolution in his release of everything: doubt, suspicion, worry, regret, guilt, etc... In the end he realizes that there is someone waiting for him and you can feel the anxious desire to rush home to it and grab hold of it tightly with both arms. They say if you love something set it free but that's so foolish. Love has nothing to do with possession in a physical sense. If you love something you grab ahold of it's heart and you never let go. You keep that heart safe and warm, satisfying it's every need. And whether you get that kind of love back is inconsequential. Love is not quid pro quo.

Full Lyrics: I'm driving a big lazy car rushin' up the highway in the dark I got one hand steady on the wheel and one hand's tremblin' over my heart It's pounding baby like it's gonna bust right on through And it ain't gonna stop till I'm alone again with you A friend of mine became a father last night When we spoke in his voice I could hear the light Of the skies and the rivers the timberwolf in the pines And that great jukebox out on Route 39 They say he travels fastest who travels alone But tonight I miss my girl mister tonight I miss my home Is it the sound of the leaves Left blown by the wayside That's got me out here on this spooky old highway tonight Is it the cry of the river With the moonlight shining through That ain't what scares me baby What scares me is losing you They say if you die in your dreams you really die in your bed But honey last night I dreamed my eyes rolled straight back in my head And God's light came shinin' on through I woke up in the darkness scared and breathin' and born anew It wasn't the cold river bottom I felt rushing over me It wasn't the bitterness of a dream that didn't come true It wasn't the wind in the grey fields I felt rushing through my arms No no baby it was you So hold me close honey say you're forever mine And tell me you'll be my lonely valentine
