The Toleman turbo cars were bloody quick, but annoyingly unreliable. I was at the British Grand Prix that same year, when Derek Warwick was charging his Toleman round Brands Hatch, carving up the field and overtaking Didier Pironi to run in second place before a two-bob part broke and he had to retire. Before he had to drop out he was reducing the gap to Lauda who was out in front. I will never forget the cheer that went up from the British crowd when Warwick passed Pironi to take second place, on the main straight. Great days.

Problem with Renault engine was fuel economy reliability 85,86 87 it received Honda power plant, 1 spec behind Honda that powered Williams. When senna came to lotus 85 No one had won for years until senna came along, and no-one won after he left. 3 time world champion Nelson piquet became lotus driver 88 when senna went to McLaren. and best he could achieve was 3 3rd places, senna did better then that first year with toleman two 3rd places and one 2nd. 88 piquet had same Honda V6 that powered McLaren, but piquet, nakijima struggled to beat naturally aspirated cars With a lot less horsepower then their own

Senna was always dancing around in that car. For Brundle to feel confident and comfortable just means he was far from doing what Senna was doing in that car and was just driving under the limit.
@Jimaybob
2 жыл бұрын
Or that they have different driving styles? You can always put a car over the limit at any time depending on you who drive it. You can make a routine corner look like it’s on the ragged edge if you’ve made a mistake
@hristoitchov
2 жыл бұрын
@@Jimaybob No, a car only has one absolute limit under specific circumstances (car specs, setup, tyres, track conditions, track layout etc.), so all you can do is get as close to that limit as possible. Since we can't ever see Brundle go as quick as Senna in the same car while driving it differently, it's impossible to tell, but Senna's track record speaks for itself. It would be rather odd to somehow imagine Brundle actually being the better driver, with almost nothing to back such a claim. And it's ridiculous to suggest Senna was making mistakes while amassing those poles in a lesser machinery... Senna pushed the car as far as he could to extract the maximum speed out of it and if it meant putting the car sideways here and there, then a different driving style wouldn't have worked. That doesn't mean Senna was not being smooth or making mistakes. He just put the car at the right angle at the right speed. Especially back then with those cars and tyres, the cars were rarely going on rails at the limit. Of course nobody in their right mind would expect Brundle to push the car in such a test, risking his own life or at the very least, to potentially destroy the machine.
@Jimaybob
2 жыл бұрын
@@hristoitchov if it’s not possible to put the car past the limit in routine circumstances how is it possible to fishtail into the wall on a straight? Or understeer into a gravel trap at low speed? You don’t understand driving.
@hristoitchov
2 жыл бұрын
@@Jimaybob LOL, I've been racing for 20+ years, but sure, I don't understand driving. What are you even asking? What routine circumstances are there exactly while driving a race car on the limit? I was never talking about pushing the car beyond the limit and making a mistake, but getting as close to the limit as possible. For that to happen it often requires that you put the car at an angle, to reach the tyres peak slip angle and maximum downforce (which is always at a cross angle within a few degrees). Even in modern F1 it happens, but it's almost negligible and difficult to notice. With those cars back then, it was mandatory if they were ever to drive them on the absolute limit, thus Senna dancing around. Just go and watch his pole at Adelaide in 1985. Brundle never does that in this case, and he's only boasting to cater to clueless fans like yourself.
@Jimaybob
2 жыл бұрын
@@hristoitchov how is *he* the one boasting? He’s speaking of the cars qualities. He’s complimenting the car. Also, I’m sure you’ll find Prost had a far smoother driving style than Senna despite driving the same exact car as him for their respective championship seasons in 88 and 89. Do you truly believe that’s entirely a function of “driving to the limit” vs different driving styles, given their comparable results?

Second, yes.. but it should have been first because Porsche employee Jacky Ickx ( who was the circuit steward ) controversially stopped the race prematurely just as Senna in his inferior Tolman had overtook Prost in his Porsche-engined McLaren.
