Very well executed solo. He was in the pocket, punchy and he was restrained. You don't have to have a million strokes to have a great drum solo. He was playing at a very prestigious event, so I'm sure he had to have a rehearsed solo. He had fun, he showed finesse, he didn't overdo it. It was great.

When I was much younger, my bass teacher showed me this full performance. His goal was to help me understand the “performance” side of music and how it takes more than just playing the song correctly to perform something that people want to listen to. This is the perfect performance to showcase this concept. Bruno plays in the pocket with fantastic feel and approaches his solo appropriately without overloading us with technically complex fills. But equally importantly; he does this with swagger. The way he beats the hell out of his snare and looks into the audience to connect with them. The faces he pulls and the exaggerated crashes of his cymbals. These are all apart of what makes this an effective opening to a fantastic performance. Perfectly executed. I’m so glad I was taught this lesson as a young musician because it sets pros apart from mediocrity. Thanks Bruno and thanks to my og bass teacher.

The haters on this video complaining that anybody could play this are so foolish. First of all, while its not an incredibly technical drum solo, Bruno does display some chops at 0:30 that are definitely beyond what most beginners could do. I also wouldn't be surprised if he has more chops he's not displaying. Secondly, his timing and feel are great. Its these kinda "small details" that seperate the amateurs from the pros. There's an art to playing "simple stuff" but making it sound great. Thats why guys like Steve Gadd are legends. Finally, keep in mind the context. He's a pop artist playing to a superbowl audience. The average listener doesn't care if music is "technical" or not. They care if it sounds musical. Were The Beatles technical? No. Were they musical? The majority of the world seems to think so. Bruno gets it. These haters are blinded by their own egos.

Bruno is a legitimate musician. He actually plays piano, guitar, he sings, not hard to believe he would play drums. Musical instruments are like train stations, you might be going to Penn station but decide one day you'll just take a different train for the hell of it and end up at Times Square station. The thing about drumming is that drumming consistently in time, playing effectively, finding a rhythm that feels natural and soloing even for a minute feels like an hour. Go play drums to a 3 minute track, trying to get through it really does feel longer than it should.

I remember watching this live and I was shocked that he was even able to keep time. I personally loved the solo and it completely changed my perception on the guy. He played it with great energy, enthusiasm, and he was fucking HITTING those drums instead of tapping them like so many “drummers” I’ve seen. I used to be filled with hatred against pop musicians when I first started playing (big punk/metal/jazz enthusiast) but later came to realize you need to have a mass amount of talent and musical understanding if you TRULY want to be a star and not just a one-hit wonder.

Superbowl Performances are not played live. They use a prerecorded track for the performance. Apparently, there are too many technical aspects to a live performance to have to worry about during such a immense production. The red hot chili peppers almost passed up their opportunity to perform for the superbowl because they couldn't play live. They opted to perform with their instruments unplugged so there was no confusion as to whether it was an actual live performance.

Why are you all acting like seeing a musician able to play an instrument is an unbelievable thing it should be expected
@sethb1059

Those “drummers” that hit lightly are called musicians. If you ever teach kids and teenagers drums you’ll know that it’s a very basic human instinct to hit them hard, and it’s easy to play loud. It’s art to play lightly.

The guy can roll drums, shred on guitar and pianos too.. And high pitch great voice too.. He can even dance.. He might not be world's best in any of the instruments, but combining all his talents together, he is a great showman.. In fact he is one of the best in the world in his generation today, because they don't come as talented as this anymore..

I’ve been drumming a long time and if anyone wants to talk smack the only one I saw playing drums on the 50 yd line was Bruno Mars. He’s there because he know what to play and when not because he’s the most technically proficient.

As a drummer I think we all see some kind of fill, chop, tweak of a change that could be thrown in. No matter how good you are. That’s the beautiful thing about drumming. We all learn from each other and throw some new shit in as well.

@Metal Monkey failed English but you're clearly not an A-rated vocalist who can dance and sing at the same time and is also able to play 6 other instruments besides the drums. Now what? 🤷 And if you're a drummer, you better make sure you're better than Bruno who's an artist, musician, singer, before he is a drummer. Drumming is like the 10th skill in his arsenal, so if you're comparing your main talent to his secondary one, what does that tell about yourself lmao 💀
