Well, dang it! I was totally DONE with my Brussels planning (will be there next week) and decided to watch this anyway, and now I have to fit even more into my trip. Hahahahaha. (Seriously, thanks for the tips!)

We eat mussels with empty shells. Btw: we don't say the King and Queen of Belgium, but the King and Queen of the Belgians. Because they are not ruling over us, we are not their subjects, they represent us, that's why we say "of the Belgians ".

Great video. Nice to see unusual places of Brussels. Precision: The Royal Palace you visited is where the king works and where they have all official events of the kingdom of Belgium. The Royal Family resides in another palace in Laeken, a Brussels area near the Atomium .

Great vide, guys!! Love all your videos. Just a quick fact. The most famous Belgian comics are the Tintin comics which are extremely popular in our country.

We did finally manage to watch one with English subtitles and it was fun! I can see why it would be popular. 😊 (but for some reason only the smurfs made it to the USA!)

Nice video. Well done for getting off the beaten track. As a Brussels resident there were a couple of things here that were new to me. Better (IMHO) than the comic museum is to download from the tourist office the walking tour of the comic murals across the city. PS the game you saw was pelota, a very local, unusual game - you were lucky to see it.

6:53 NOT Fritland ! Every tourist ends up there. Apparently fries are good but prices are high for what you get. 8:01 Manneken Pis is a symbol for the authority defiant (and humorous) "Brusseleirs" (citizens of Brussels). There are 2 more peeing statues, a girls and a dog, to discover in Brussels.

Muscles tip: you use the shell of the first muscle you eat as tweezers to pluck the rest out of their shells unless the first one came apart a little which they often do when you pluck them out with a fork, because they you've got bits of muscle dangling out. in that case you use the first shell to obtain the 2nd shell and then the 2nd to obtain subsequent muscles

22:17 "Game Over" referring to video games is a rather brutal 1-page comics series. 23:22 This mural depicts Nero (on top) and other main characters of the comics series with the same name. He and his author Marc Sleen (RIP) have their own comics museum in Brussels. There are 3 comics "schools" in Belgium. 2 are Franco-Belgian, one known as "Marcinelle", more offbeat with head figure Spirou, one more uptight, "Brussels", head figure Tintin. The 3rd one is Flemish, rather disconnected from the other 2. Head figures are Suske en Wiske (aka Bob & Bobette or Wanda & Willy). This is very general information, check the internet for way more details.

Belgian weather is ALWAYS confusing. Temperature can raise or go down with over 10° in 1 day. But don't let that stop you.

Mossels with ...cherry beer? And you survived it? 😅. It combines best (for me) with white beer like Hoegaarden or Brugs Tarwebier, or a Sauvignon Blanc wine (not that "world wine" Chardonnay). The mossels we like to eat with an empty shell instead of a fork.
@TalesFromOurPocket

I'm (Heather) allergic to Chardonnay! Sauv Blanc is the way. Bill really enjoyed the cherry beer - it's more unusual than what's usually available in the US. We should have eaten mussels with an empty shell! I feel like we missed out on that now. 😂 🥂

11:49 "we ordered just one portion" The waiter must have thought you were Dutch. Yes, they'll allow less plates to be ordered than there are people seated (not counting children) but it gets you a cheapskate reputation. Take the small portion or order something else. It doesn't matter how long it takes to eat all that, this isn't the USA, they won't rush you out of the door. The Hallepoort / Porte de Hal is not a castle but merely a city gate. Sometimes we see it big too. "Kriek" (cherry) is a traditional beer brewed by local breweries spreading from south to west of Brussels.

Okay rule 1 for Brussels: don't drink or eat at or just around grand place. Everything is like 5 times more expensive and only tourists go there, go a little away from the centre for more affordable and more genuine vibes and meals.

Belgians are used to eat fries with mayonaise. Real mayonaise I mean, not that disgusting orange stuff they called mayo in Chicago. But Americans don't seem to like it. Always ketchup. Or something else. But: NO mayo.

The Brussels waffle is supposed to be rectangular while the Liège waffle is supposed to be more rounded. The dough of the Brussels waffle is soft, the Liège waffle less so.
