Wilhelm Boger was born on 19 December 1906 in Zuffenhausen, then part of the German Empire. In 1929, Wilhelm Boger joined the Nazi Party and, in the same year, also became a member of the SA, or Sturmabteilung, which was the Nazi paramilitary force also known as the Storm Troopers or 'Brownshirts' due to the color of their uniforms. In 1930, he transferred from the SA to the SS, and in the following years, after holding several jobs, he became unemployed. On 30 January 1933, Adolf Hitler was appointed Chancellor of Germany by President Paul von Hindenburg.
In July 1933, Boger joined the political police in Stuttgart and then attended the police training school from 1936 to 1937. After passing the police force examination in 1937, he was appointed Police Commissioner, even though he had been taken into custody in 1936 for mistreating a prisoner during an interrogation. The Second World War began on 1 September 1939 when Germany invaded Poland. Wilhelm Boger was a sadist feared by the inmates in the camp, not only because of the atrocities he committed but also because of his physical appearance. He was 1.7 meters of 5 foot 6 inches tall and disproportionately built, with shoulders that were too narrow. He had sunken cheeks, a cold stare, and a very protruding lower jaw which made him look like he was constantly sticking his chin out. Moreover, he had ugly, uneven, and dark teeth, and a very prominent Adam’s apple. The Second World War in Europe ended on 8 May 1945. After the war, Wilhelm Boger went into hiding, but after several weeks he was arrested by the American military police and sent to an internment camp in Dachau. However, in November 1946, he escaped during transport for extradition to Poland. For the rest of the 1940s, Boger lived unnoticed, working as an agricultural laborer. In September 1950, he found a job as a warehouse manager, in his birthplace of Zuffenhausen. He then led a quiet, small-town life, and when acquaintances or neighbors asked about his activities at Auschwitz, he would say he had done nothing he regretted.
In March 1958, the Stuttgart public prosecutor's office received a letter from Adolf Rögner, a former Auschwitz prisoner, accusing Wilhelm Boger and other former SS members of atrocities committed at Auschwitz. In October of the same year, Boger was arrested at his workplace and questioned at the Stuttgart police headquarters.
There were no tears shed for Wilhelm Boger.
