The idea that the slime mold's relationship with Brachydios' skin is as a food source, along Brachydios' skin being confirmed as needing constant death and regrowth, is actually a genius reason for how the relationship between monster and slime both works now, and how it started out. If Brachydios's ancestor started as a swamp dwelling generalist, the layers upon layers of dead and regrowing skin layers make sense for protection from swamp parasites, similar to crocodilian scales. And from there, the slime mold just needed to take advantage of this animal giving it a slow, but consistent cycle of dead skin material to digest, and that's probably all that was needed for the relationship to begin.

I generally don't think Brachy is that bad of a Monster design wise, he looks a bit unique, but it serves to help him fill his role I think. His Slimemold actually makes a bit more sense to me after watching this video now. Ultimately it seems to help him unearth prey as you said, or bust open tough shells which it can them pry open further with it's hooked claws. I think all Brachydios needs to really flourish in an ecological sense is more Environmental interactions, and some new small monsters it can specialize in hunting using it's slimemold.

My personal head cannon is that Brachydios hunts like a super-sized Aye-aye/Woodpecker with it using it's fists to tap the ground trying to find things like lava tubes or buried prey by the sound of hollow spaces. Perhaps by resting their horn on the surface to "hear" the vibrations through it's skull like a reptile does since it doesn't appear to have external ears and after finding such a space applying the slime to blow it open to get to the prey inside stunning it in the process.

As UHC said, the pounders themselves seem weaker than first thought against bigger monsters. The slime mold is the real killer, and my guess is the slime mold's explosive dispersal is just far stronger than Brachy's punches against things bigger than it, like Uragaan. On top of that, the Uragaan in Iceborne was visibly weak even before the slime mold exploded, which means it was likely injured or just a weaker individual that Brachy could finish off.

@TragikDino
56 минут бұрын
@@TsulaAngenati2292 That makes sense to me, a young inexperienced Urgaan that the Brachy found to be easy food. Admittedly there’s probably a lot of hunters that “prove their mettle” by taking down young, inexperienced, or just generally weak monsters, but due to the size of most monsters even as adolescents or even juveniles most common folk think it’s an extremely impressive feat, to them things like an aggressive Kestedon or even a riled up popo are exceptionally dangerous to be around, nonetheless elemental monsters like tobi-kadchi. Only seasoned hunters and researchers (maybe blacksmiths too, depending on how age may affect monster part quality or durability) can really identify a monster’s age, and thus how dangerous it may or may not have been to kill. If you were a common farmer in monster hunter who’s only ever seen things like popo, aptonoth, maybe a veliprey here and there and then you see a hunter haul in a whole ass anjanath you’re gonna be impressed, even though it’s not even as heavy as the biggest popo you’ve seen it’s supposed to be impressive since it’s a predator. Then comes along a seasoned hunter and he says to the one you just saw “Maybe you should stop raiding nests like a kulu-ya-ku and try hunting something that knows how to fight back.”
@indomleon
4 сағат бұрын
I wonder if the specialized rootling you mentioned being less likely in the volcano actually explains the origin of the horn. Maybe the horn was originally present on the ancestor species for digging around in the rocky soil of the volcanoes. The fact that it is small on baby Brachydios does potentially take away from that idea, since they are the ones who would still need to perform this behavior, but it could be argued that the young don't need to dig up the slime anymore, since they pick it up from the territorial markings of the adults

I think an unslimed Brachy could work, as a wierd but cool boxing brute wyvern! But it's pretty fun to hear you talk about how Brachy couldn't work biologically, when I've heard so many people use him and Zinogre as "good" biological creature designs. Brachyidos has a special place in my heart because of my first time fighting him in 3U (my second game) and how cool his stuff looked. Brachydios, in my opinion, is the flagship monster with the worst and least build up to its reveal and most insignificant story presence ever. It is literally just one quest. Before it, Rathalos, Tigrex, Kushala, Zinogre and Lagiacrus all had an overarching story and presence. NPCS revered and feared them. You would also encounter them all early, usually in a gathering quest and you'd be outmatched by them. Forced to run from them at first before finally hunting them down later. With Brachydios the Moga Sweetheart will mention once the guild is finding weird slime in the volcano in dialogue text box from behind her counter. Then the next Urgent you get is to hunt it. It doesn't feel like a flagship in its own debut game. Which is probably why some people thought Azure Rathalos is the flagship of 3U. Ivory Lagiacrus had better build up to it with the Moga Chief gradually telling you more about his exploits as a hunter in his youth and about the one that got away.

I definitely agree that there should be more hand focused Brute Wyverns, and I'd argue that's the direction with the most room for variety/experimentation. Imagine, if you will, a nocturnal Brute Wyvern based on an Aye-Aye. Its signature weapon? Long, spindly arms tipped with hooked claws for hunting small prey. Could reduce the muzzle to an almost flat face, since the jaws aren't its primary hunting tool. And of course, huge creepy ass eyes to see in the dark. Would be a great nocturnal "boogeyman" role. Terrible in a fight with bigger monsters, but perfectly suited for snatching humans that wander to close to the forest's edge at night.

@@WyattStrange I am too, theri has always been so cool to me. Theri and spinosaurus are my favorite herbivore and carnivore dinosaurs by far and yet neither have really been in monster hunter, theri especially is always depicted as the stand and fight herbivore that doesn’t take shit from anyone and that can easily be translated to monster hunter with a burly herbivore brute wyvern that lives up to the class name with aggressive attacks and a high health pool. Monster hunter could also make it the long sword or dual blade monster equivalent, just like how glav is the great sword in monster form. Or the claws could absorb elements and aliments used against it. The tail could be the important part break as this monster likely needs it for balance but it’s also the difficult part break since it always tries to face you, taking priority to targets behind it or that attack the tail

Brachydios is the flagship monster of 3G/3U, but it wasn't on the cover of the game on copies released outside of Japan. The reason being it was thought Brachydios would look odd to western fans who were still small group at the time. So they used Azure Rathalos, banking on it being a familiar face to rope in the older fans, and because they thought its more classic dragon like appearance would attract more new players.

I do think Brachydios would benefit more of a design of a Ceratopsian or an Ankylosaur, still retaining the Therapod like body. If we are fortifying its sides and underbelly, the back would be a weakspot where you have to topple Brachy to have more damage.

I'd like to imagine it would plant mold near insect colonies and "farm" the area similar to the diablos mythos. When the brachi needs mould it would gather some and munch on insects nearby as their enzymes serve to function as the ignitor catalyst.

Can you make a parody video of yourself being Steve Irwin in Monster Hunters universe? I think you’d do a great job

I really like Brachy's fight and theme, but will admit it always felt out of place to me. I think Magnamalo, Brachydios, and kinda Astalos give me this feeling of "oh you feel out of place and weird" even in their home environments. Like they just clash or don't make sense.
