I see that many learners are asking how to practice notes other than Sa (c in western notation). I believe one can pick the note of his/her choice to practice...like I have my android app "tuner-pitched" where they have sine wave mode in chromatic tuning...which allows me to choose a scale first (I choose E because I have E natural base flute) , and then it gives me a full circle showing all 12 notes (even the octaves selection ). Then I put on an earphone, play note of my choice in a low volume...and then I practice the same note on my flute. It really works like miracle. I'd like to thank Ashwin ji for making this BT series videos...💕

One of the best explanation! I have been to many gurus (and this is not to say that they are not good but may be just that they did not understand my problem), but no one explained this clearly and this easily. It required about 10 years or so for me to realize this fact as I am not form a family with musical background. I wished someone had told me earlier. I would have performed in front of people more confidently, without worrying about the correctness of my first note. Anyways, better late than never. Thanks for the video.

Hello sir. You are absolutely right about swar peti. I am one of those whose ears were not ready with the tanpura. So when i started practicing with shruti box(swar peti), i could actually start feeling the Sa. This helped me alot in finding the scales immediately while playing live. But my question now is not about,its about pitch of other swaras. When we play randomly while accompanying or during the times when we keep changing flutes for different songs,we match Sa n start but during the course kai sur besure lagte ae. I don't have my ears made so much that they can exactly judge shrutis while playing fast or randomly. Can there be any exercises for it. I try to make its sense by keeping tuner in front of me n shruti box being played in background. After some time the notes i am hitting never gets off pitch but during random playing they do get off pitch. What could be the exercise for it. Second question is about Volume control. During the taar saptak Sa or the above taar saptak swaras,the volume gets higher. But if i try to lower volume then the swar gets flat. But i have seen you n many others maintaining pitch at proper place n variating volume. Variating volume with resonance is also associated with it what we call jwari of bansuri. Pour some light on this issue also. Because of this volume i think the feel of the instrument is profoundly dependant. Sorry for taking too much time here sir. What I think you can address these topics really well because you are amongst the pioneers of light music. And I am abit tensed about these issues. Practicing n striving daily for it but i think there should not be any lacuna about technique. Kindly guide me over it please. Sandeep Narang In case issues need to be discussed personally or with any fee. No issues. My watsapp n call no. 9463616405 Shall be really thankful sir

In Acoustics, those vibrato sounds are called beat frequencies. They emanate when there are two constant tones that are within a close range but are not exactly matched. Thank you for this video! It may be the reason why Komal re in most raags is usually andolit, especially ati komal re which is very close to Sa - if it’s stationary instead, it might get close enough to Sa on the tanpura to give rise to beat frequencies - which are not considered musical. When one of the two tones is oscillating there is no beat frequency even if it’s very close to the other tone.
@vayuflute3717
I have to disagree with you here. The komal RE is sufficiently far from SA (20 to 30 hz, depending on your starting point) for you to hear beat frequencies clearly. The andolit in komal RE and indeed in any swaras is just part of the raag characteristic, to give you a particular flavour. There many raags where the komal RE is rendered flat.
@theblaseone
@@vayuflute3717 Let's say one uses the standard Hindustani concert flute of the key 'E' at 164.8 Hz. Then in a raag like Shree, the (andolit) ati komal re undulates within the ballpark of 169-172 Hz. 169Hz is close enough to 164.8 to trigger beat frequencies - I tried it out by playing the lower octave ati-komal-re of around 169 Hz against the backdrop of only the shruti peti by ensuring that the volume of the re and the shruti peti are closely matched and guess what? I got these fast-fluttering beat frequencies!! You can try this too. But I didn't get them for the same combination of Sa and re in the immediately upper octave. I don't know if this is because the pitch distance widens as you play higher frequency tones or on higher pitched flutes like those used in Carnatic music, but I could be wrong. You are right in that the standard komal re (such as say in the raag Puriya Dhanashree) is far enough from Sa (although certainly not upto 20 to 30 Hz in the lower octave of a Hindustani concert flute in 'E') to not trigger beat frequencies. Thank you for your views, would love to hear more from you on this.
@vayuflute3717
You sent me a private note but I am replying to it here because I don't know how to send a private message (perhaps you can teach me?). Basically, what I was trying to say is that the frequency of the first SA in a standard E bass bansuri that most professionals seem to prefer is 329.6hz, not 164.8hz. Check it yourself with any tuner. A 164.8 hz E bansuri would be impossibly long to play!
