The way I saw this song when it dropped wasn't so much them going for everyone who hit the clubs and did what they wanted to. It seemed more directed at the other companies, idols, and even underground people who were trying to make it and complaining about not making. Some Idols were insulting BTS for their success they were getting and yet those same idols were caught drunk driving, or were doing other things. BTS seemed to be saying 'Hey, don't trash us. We're grinding for our success, we're doing what we need to do to get our music out there. You can't complain you're not making it when you'd rather go to some party rather than practice and get your music out there'. That's how I perceived those lines.

I definitely understand the sentiment about doing both, but I think most of the "shade" was towards the "artists" who have everything else done *for* them (except for singing and performing, of course) while said artists just chilling and going partying. If talking about outside the entertainment industry, then the message would be along the lines "you can't achieve any goals without actually working hard for them". P.S.: BigHit certainly had a lot to lose, and the pressure was big. They invested everything they could in BTS and their previous comeback (Danger) didn't deliver. So during Dope era pressure was certainly high. They had to succeed, or the question about disbandment would've been brought up.
@gloss39

i agree! like they're not shading everyone partying or clubbing but they're talking about having it tough going for their dreams. How they had to really work hard while, like you said, others got their big companies working for them. And we all know how dirty it works in their industry most of the time.

Fellas, I love the commentary and great discussion. I almost speed to the end to hear y'alls thoughts. I think the amount of pressure these boys had on them from the start is critical. But Bang PD did such a good job and stating that they need to follow your heart and their art more than trying to keep the company afloat. Yeah BTS say whatever they want they don’t hesitate to put people down if they are disrespectful but this song talk about how they got their success they say instead of having fun in the club like most people they dance non stop “even if their youth rots in dance practices thanks to that they are closer to success.” And they handle everything maturely Recently SM’s group NCT stole one of TXT same company as bts) music beats made by supreme boi and Hybe entertainment/bighit could have publicly talk about it but instead they didnt say anything but warned Sm and later SM put supreme Boi in the song credits. None of it is NCT’s fault but i am so sick of companies stealing song etc without even crediting other artists.

For legitimate reasons, the guy who says I get the message but don't like them shading people who go to clubs actually is missing the message. to his defense, many ARMY when they explain the message seem to focus on the braggadocio but do not hear what BTS really is trying to communicate. But Curtis came closest. The song's messaging actually is tied to Korean social ills, most specifically young people often being prejudicially preordained with specific lots in life based on class then being deemed a "giving up generation" who are lazy and not accepting of their responsibilities while following an arduous prescribed path. Central to Dope, most young people are not blessed to be spoons, coming from well to do families, but are forced through a rigorous educational system only to wind up with jobs inadequate to allow them to establish a life where they can enjoy what are deemed fundamental human rights. At the point of this song there were seven of these given up rights (now up to nine). When RM asks in a poorly translated verse given up on 3, given up on 6, he comes to the conclusion society is the enemy and you must have energy and not give up on the 7th fundamental right, namely hope. Keep in mind this song was at the time of a corrupt conservative government protecting the wealthy. The bragging and seeming dissing of others is two fold. Firstly it is a statement that we, BTS, a highly dissed group at the point this song came out, are busting our ass while you (those who are hating on us) are spooning a lifestyle of privilege working for large corporation. The Big 3 corporations are giving you resources you get without as much work so can live a better life style. It also is a statement that our generation has many examples of young people who have not given up (BTS is a metaphor). If you listen to Fire, you will see BTS is not dissing club going by the hard working non-spoons. There BTS says it is ok to be a loser (meaning viewed by the privileged as a loser). Go light it up.

this song was one of the first songs I heard, and it was one of the songs that turned me into an army. Jimin is passionate, and I sell another one with the "once you Jimin, you can't Jimin out" shirt is proof of that.The boys' charisma makes us understand why they are where they are. about the shade on the back folks in the song, you guys need to understand that the MV was released in 2015, 5 years ago., the kpop industry was different, the way the songs were made, what was set as the default, and what would be "hit" at the time. they've grown up, and show with each song and album their growth. It was a good reaction, thanks for reacting to dope. I would like you to react more to their live performance. I think you would see the power they have singing and dancing live.

They arent called MONSTER ROOKIES for no reason. And about the change in music.. I do know that Hitman Bang allows and encourages them to make their own music. As a matter of fact, he wants them to create music that resonates with their stories. You can hear this in The Rise of Bangtan docuseries. Just goes to prove how much musical freedom they have in bh, compared to other labels. Sure, they had in house producers. But the rapline had a huge part in their songs lyrically and production-wise, they make their own beats; the change in music was possibly their decision as artists too. In the docuseries, you'd see that even months prior, rapline would sleep at 5 or 6 in the morn to complete their songs. As rookies, it's remarkable to see how well invested they are in making music.

This song is a tribute to hustlers like doctors and people who contribute to society while it is criticising people who whine about not achieving success when it's because they slack off. E.g. Idols who go clubbing or party all night instead of practicing and making music will not go far. BTS wants to raise awareness and preserve the values of today's generation to work hard for their own future instead of giving up and wasting their youth.

More for regular life when it comes to shading people but if you know the history of BTS and how POOR they were versus groups that come from the Big 3 companies (SM, YG, JYP) who had the money privilege as well as exposure privilege and could honestly slack off…it makes sense. This is a 15 minute edited dance section from a 1 hour and 22 minute V-Live, where he answered questions, danced, and took us on a tour of HYBE to his new studio. *J Hope V-Live - Freestyle Hip Hop (7/26/2021)* - kzitem.info/news/bejne/paGYv4KZs6OBoag JIMIN initially was really good at hip hop, and then he took contemporary dance at his performing arts school. This was their 2nd comeback. The ideas expressed here about them not being 'polished' and this being amateur is the taint of someone who came to know BTS LATE and jumped on the bandwagon. Those of us who saw the talent from the start, back in 2014, know better than this and just *shake our heads* at the arrogance of such statements. Of course, the amount of money backing them in the early days was slim. They got a lot of hate for being from a small company and not having the "nice" things others have. The music industry isn't like the USA, so comparing it in these terms is just a fallacy. Go back and look at their very 1st stuff like Danger ~ kzitem.info/news/bejne/w5ed0GtugoNkn2U ~ or Boy In Luv ~ kzitem.info/news/bejne/zm6DzH6db2qgdqg in 2014, this stuff, especially their choreo wasn't even being done in South Korea, and these guys were between the ages of 17-22 at the time. Think of all your hit stars you think are "polished" and ask what they were doing at those ages, and how much of a TRENDSETTER they were. The thing about 'Dope' is that the choreo is legit difficult to do, especially while singing, and you can scour KZitem for videos around 2016 when it was released and see ALL the PROFESSIONAL DANCE GROUPS that took the choreo and reproduced, including using it for their own DANCE COMPETITIONS. It's what made BTS start having such a huge fan base out of South Korea, unlike many other acts, including EXO. NCT benefits from the path that BTS pathed for them, and also draws attention to other artists from back in the day. The fact that BTS surpassed an act like EXO, that had all the backing and money of SM Entertainment proves what I'm trying to say here... EXO was around and more "POLISHED" in 2016 when 'DOPE' came out. The album it comes from "WINGS' was Korea's best selling album at the time. Let's put it this way, EXO's album 'Ex'Act', that came out a few much early than "WINGS" was MNET Asian Music Award's 'Album of the Year' but, how many songs on that album do the AVERAGE AMERICAN Kpop listener even know ??? ~ "Monster"?, "Cloud 9"? "Lucky One"? "Lotto"??? Then compare that to "Intro: Boy Meets Evil"? 'Begin'?, "Lie"? 'Stigma" "Awake" "BTS Cyper pt. 4" 'Spring Day" etc etc??? For not being POLISHED and coming from a rich music label, these boys generated a LOT of music in the year of 2016 that NEWBIES who are just NOW learning about them are listening to and EATING UP like it's perfection... because it is... Sometimes these Newbie review comments just need to be taken for what they are ~ noobish.

I really don't understand the red hoodie guy he always looks unimpressed and gives useless opinions no offense. I get that he likes RM he's amazing everyone knows but that doesn't make the rest of the members any less and how was that dance unpolished? I've seen hundreds of dancers reacting to dope and no one has ever said anything like this, i think that dance is still one of the best choreo of Bts
