The donut shop is also an iconic pop culture reference. It is modelled after 'Randy's Donuts' in LA. The shop has such a large donut on top that you can see it from airplanes as they land in LAX and it has been the backdrop of many music videos, TV shows, & movies.

oooo thanks for adding this info too! I keep racking my brain on where I saw this Donut Shop because I swear it was so familiar (I thought maybe it was the donut shop in The Simpsons). And now that you mention Randy's Donuts I finally remembered that I saw this shop in movies like Iron Man 2 and Dope (I love this movie, it was also youth retro-themed).

Some things I noticed in the song itself: 1.) the 'I, I, I'm in the stars tonight"...is a reference to the "I, I, I, I'm stayin' alive, stayin' alive" by the BeeGees, a song featured in John Travolta's movie "Saturday Night Fever." 2.) the funky picking of the guitar is very much like most funk songs from the 60's/70's. 3.) The final 4 notes played at the very end of the song are the same 4 notes and rhythm from the Jackson 5's "I want you back!" Go look it up, it's so cool how the song writer and/or producer paid homage to MJ one last time at the very end of Dynamite. This song is genius!

As a big Fan of Michael Jackson for almost 2 decades now, I was so happy that BTS and the crew behind the production of the song and MV paid homage to his discographies. I'm a huge fan of MJ and when he died, something inside of me became dull, but when I became a fan of BTS on October of 2018, the light of being a fan girl and supporting an artist came back just as equal as I support Michael Jackson. Its very different now because I became a fan of MJ at a very young age and MJ was not really on his prime years He's already on Hiatus, I was born 1992 and all I have was his past music and MVs. As for BTS I get to witness all of it because they are very active now. I know they are very different Artists but the messages and the advocacy they convey through their music really got me to support them equally as MJ and love them as a whole even more. Again Bookish Theories, thanks for making this video

That edit and gif of Yoongi throwing confetti is adorable and funny lol I may have mentioned this before, BTS are true musicians. Every time we are thinking about similar things and earlier I was watching the mv again, made me feel better today. I have to mention I studied Motown music years ago as well as other music and musicians. The King Kong story and movie I've studied a few years ago. Oh wow, I said all of this in a comment I was making online earlier. Everything you've just mentioned, I've mentioned too. What Taehyung said, "I can confidently say that I love music and I have a passion for music and dancing more than anything else but I realized once again that it's more important than that, we have people who listen to and love our music." I mentioned something very similar to this. This is all of what I said in that comment online: "They do this because they love what they do; they love music. All of the members have talked about this many times, you have to take the time to listen to what they're saying. BTS like taking risks and challenging themselves. Dynamite is also about putting a smile on your face because things are really rough right now. “Life is Dynamite.” They want to make people happy and give them the courage to live their life even through such difficult times. Dynamite was meant to be seen as something positive in a world full of negative shadows. BTS are experimenting with their music as an artist does with their paint on a blank canvas. We get to see many colors of them as individuals and musicians. When people say things like BTS changed or they sound different. Because it doesn't fit people's likes or perspectives. It's like putting BTS in a cage or glass box with no freedom to express themselves. We have to see things in BTS's perspective as well, not just our own. And art is an expression of oneself. BTS has given many people the courage to try new things and to be better (having a positive mentality, health-wise, or otherwise). They have given other musicians/artists the courage to start making and to keep making music. They have given artists (painters, sculptors, digital artists, traditional artists) the courage to not give up and express themselves as well. Not just artists either, but writers and people in general too. BTS brings out the confidence in us. They’ve shown us that in "Dynamite" as well. We know BTS will do what they want even if people say it sounds different or if people say it's terrible. They will always be true to themselves. And there is a broader cross-section of people that still love all of their music. I can now confidently say that I genuinely like all of their songs because the songs mean so much to BTS. I see their music as parts of them :) Also, Jimin said this in an interview, “I went into the recording thinking and hoping that the song will be able to give ARMY some joy, and it made me really happy.” Jungkook also said they thought about the lyrics a lot." I did also, talk about Boy with Luv too: "Boy With Luv, and especially Dynamite still sounds like something they would write." I agree both songs represent the little things, the simple things in life. Which reminded me of Gandalf or Olorin saying this in Lord of the Rings. This also refers to Carl Jung as well; the wise old man or guide. Every hero archetype needs a guide.

I wanted to add something else I remembered reading, it's what Yoongi (Suga) said about their music. I wanted to say this on one of your other analysis videos but I'll say it now. I'm not sure if I mentioned this before. “For a lot of our songs, there are story arcs, rather than each individual song having its own meaning, there’s a story. So it may be difficult to gauge what a song means without listening to the whole album, without listening to the entire story arc.” Yoongi (Suga) said this in the Grammy Museum interview. Knowing this BTS really does have a story to their music. A story of their journey. Oh, so they really did possibly sang this song for the "Space Jam" sequel. I wrote this in a comment earlier on Amber Dockery's reply to another comment. Are any of them wearing vans in the mv, it kind of looks like it but maybe not lol So that's what the medicine is, that Namjoon was talking about. And I was right about their older songs being mentioned in the mv or shown in the mv. Wow, that ending was a reference to "We are Bulletproof: the Eternal." I didn't notice that, thank you for talking about it too.

I really love Bookish Theories videos! It's amazing how they give details to lyrics and images of the MVs and try many theories that fit perfectly well. Many people were surprised to see a break through video of Dynamite, but in fact there is a lot to pack; it gives overall a '90 retro vibe and this was not done for over 2 decades but a very influential Korean boy group like BTS "put life" in it! I would really really really love from Bookish Theories to do a theory video of BTS comeback this autumn.... because why not? The comeback is extremely soon and I predict it to be in earl October. Love ❤❤❤❤

I wasn't sure if you were going to. I was hoping you would do the analysis and breakdown of BTS's "Dynamite" mv. Thank you for doing a breakdown on this, people really need to see this. You have described just how the music video was really meant to be seen as; to give happiness, joy, and confidence. It is also about spreading light and positivity :) I agree with everything you've mentioned too. The music video and all of their videos about "Dynamite" made me smile and laugh. I was talking about this earlier today. I don't think BTS has changed because they have matured musically. There is clearly more going on with BTS and their music. They like taking risks and experimenting with different genres of music. The clothes they were wearing near the end of the mv reminded me of the book and film "The Great Gatsby." (It's your edit at 0:21 in this analysis video.) "The Great Gatsby" is a 1925 novel written by American author F. Scott Fitzgerald. I really like the book which I read years ago, one scene that I remember really well is when the characters are in a room with the doors or windows open with the summer breeze gently blowing through the curtains, it's a calm scene compared to the rest of the book. I don't know why, but this song reminded me of that too; the good vibes. BTS mentioned "Great Gatsby" when they were talking about the scene with Jungkook and the donut in his hand. Everything else was easy to find references to; like Micheal Jackson or Jackson Five, and Space Jam movies with Yoongi's shirt/jersey. And all of this reminded me of my childhood. I see an airplane and the shadow of birds flying; doesn't that remind you of "Airplane Pt. 2" and the "ON" mv with the doves flying away or out of the cage. Airplane Pt. 2 was about traveling and spreading their music, right. Now, we can't travel well either. At the beginning of the mv, the room Jungkook was standing in reminded of the movie "Ready Player One." It's a room at the ending scene of the "Ready Player One" movie. So this room really stood out to me in the "Dynamite" mv. Also, the word "Dynamite" reminded me of Reck-It-Ralph; yes the retro game vibe but also when Fix-it Felix says the line "You are one Dynamite gal" to the character he likes. I haven't been feeling like myself lately. And that's all I wanted to say about the mv for now.

@@AwakeningWings - Thinking a lot about the lyrics is not the same as writing them. From what I've heard, they have clearly said they got the demo and decided not to change the music or lyrics and did it as is, learning the english and releasing the track with their voices but no other major changes. I could be mistaken, but from my understanding, they liked how it was, studied the lyrics, and chose to release it in english because they agreed with the message.

@@AwakeningWings - Of course, many of their songs have a good deal of English. But for this one they have mentioned several times how they did not expect to release this song, but received the demo and loved it so much they kept it as is and thought it would fit their message and what their fans need right now very well, so recorded it with only the English words and released it as a single separate from their upcoming album release. I would not be surprised to hear they changed minor things, either to stay authentic to themselves or to help with pronunciation, but all I've heard at this point is that it is one song they VERY UNUSUALLY did not participate in the lyrics on. 💜

Simply brilliant. I also thought about the use of Disco because the genre was all about joy, hedonism and also rebellion - so much so that the genre got killed off by U.S. radio in the early 1980s. Hobie is a huge Madonna fan and it made me wonder if him watching her Disco-inspired video God Control (about the lack of gun control in the U.S.) decided to use the duality of Disco to also bring joy. I mean even listening to the duality of Abba's music, uptempo melodies and genius songwriting - sometimes very dark. When I first saw the font used for Dynamite before the single dropped I instantly knew it was Disco-Pop and the way I knew BTS - this song was going to be the flip side of the Disco coin - bringing joy and happiness. I find it highly ironic that this joyful song has been competing with Cardi B's sex positive song WAP on the Billboard Hot 100, but we're living in a time where we need hope, joy and optimism. I wasn't quite sure if seeing that much flesh was appropriate in the times that we are living in. Quite frankly shocking that Dynamite is BTS's first ever #1 single on the Hot 100 - they're made songs that were so much deeper and this was a song that was shopped to them, they liked it, listened to its message and knew immediately that the song came at the right time to help many people cope with their fears, stress, sadness, sorrow or depression in the time of Rona. This song ties in very much with the BTS Universe, almost like the song was serendipitously sent their way.

Normally I wouldn't question my bias, but I'm not sure that's the reality. The references to milk and honey, and his line "Ladies and gentlemen, I've got the medicine, so you should keep your eyes on the ball" is really nagging at me (NOT in a bad way). I know the song was presented to them, but I also read that they changed some of the lyrics, so they certainly put their own spin/messaging on it. I think at this point, we ALL expect their songs/MV's to mean something profound, even if that's not the case (but I still think it is). This may be a long shot, but has anyone seen that Outer Limits episode (the "new" version from the 90s...dating myself!), starring Kirsten Dunst and Joshua Jackson, about that song everyone becomes obsessed with? I think if it every time I hear Dynamite.☀️

Namjoon also said all of this too: “We never expected this song would come, you know, like even in fully English, like you, said, but many things have changed and, you know during the process of making our album, which we’re going to release later this year, we just met this song like destiny and when we first listened to the demo, the lyrics and the vibes and you know, everything was so perfect." “It’s just about positive energy and the stars at night, the beautiful things. So we wanted to give a message of hope to all of the ARMYs all over the world.” “While recording, we danced along to it a lot … We thought we wanted to share this energy with our fans as quickly as possible and decided to release it early, something we‘ve never done before. But we just couldn’t wait.” They were so excited to show us this and really had fun recording and making the mv.

Agree with everything, except I don’t think BTS actually promotes “equality”, does it? At least it is not necessarily a value they emphasise. Rather, they emphasise authenticity and respect in diversity, empathy, healing and acceptance where there is hurt, the honouring of dreams and selfhood, or self empowerment. I can’t think of a song which promotes equality.

By the way, RM said in an interview the airplane actually did fly overhead during filming and just happened to be caught on tape; it was an accident.

I thought this vid is all about the supernatural events in the world because of the narrator's accent. 😅
