Bubbleworks was a dark ride at Chessington World of Adventures. Unfortunately, and very sadly to many, Bubbleworks shut down on September 6th 2016, and will be replaced by a Gruffalo River ride.
Bubbleworks was designed by John Wardley and Sparks Creative, under the name of Professor Burp's Bubbleworks, themed as a fizzy pop factory. The legendary soundtrack was created by Graham Smart, who was also responsible for creating the theme to Vampire.
When Bubbleworks originally opened, it was completely overshadowed by Vampire, and had to be re-introduced in 1991. It was one of the first rides to feature merchandise, which has now become a core part of theme parks today.
In 2006, Bubbleworks (after fifteen years) was redesigned by Tussauds Studios, because of a sponsorship from Imperial Leather. It took on the name of Bubbleworks, but in 2014 the Imperial Leather sponsorship ended, and the logos were removed.
Unfortunately, in 2013, a fire broke out from the Creaky Café, which spread to the finale scene of Bubbleworks, which caused to some of the exterior being rebuilt and repainted in a blue colour.
Over the years, Bubbleworks was time and time again voted to be the third best dark ride in the world (by the National Amusement Park Historical Association), and had been the start of an era of many dark rides with similar themes all across Europe. The iconic fountains in the finale scene were unique to Bubbleworks at the time, and were designed by Seton Engineering.
