Another outstanding video presentation Mr. Randy. I reckon even the most wayward millenials can't resist the culture and tradition of the great Buck sporting company with these amazing knife innovations. I'm reminded of when I got my first Buck 110. I had to go to Morganville which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So, I tied an onion to my belt which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel. And in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on ‘em. ‘Give me five bees for a quarter,’ you’d say. Now, where were we?

I ordered this knife w/ the micarta handle when it first came out and I couldn't get it centered. The blade was touching the side of the liner and I returned it. Again, its a great sized knife for my medium sized female hand. The Buck 112 has one big thing going for it: it is very practical as an every day pocket knife. The length lays in the bottom a a bluejeans pocket so it isn’t clipped, the clip rips up the upholstery and is visible. The blade takes a shaving sharp edge because unlike so many pocket knives, it has good steel. The double thumb studs means you one hand open it either hand. The short blade make it legal carry most everywhere, a 110 is not. The daily use does not involve gutting deer, killing bears, or street fights, it is usually peeling fruit, opening plastic, slicing deli meats, cutting string, or whittling. This is the Goldilocks pocket knife.

True story: I USED TO BE an Uncle Randy. I grew up backwards like Benjamin Button. The older I got the less I liked the Buck 110-esque knives. Probably the biggest part of it was I just got so darned tired of reshaepening the 400-seriese steel. I skipped the D2 craze, but was an early adopter of S30V. By the time Buck had S30V I was far from their heavy design style. The Benchmade Bugout and later the Hidden Canyon Hunter became my in-pocket EDC. Thanks for another great video.

While I can understand most of your concerns with the "Sport", I personally love the 112's dimensions. For hunting I like a shorter blade, but generally a shorter blade means a smaller handle, which I dont like. With the 112 both the handle and the blade are pretty much perfect for turning a deer into meat, IMO. With the clip and stud removed, carried either in on your belt or in a pack, I think the sport would make quite a good hunting knife.

The 110 version is a few "Bucks" cheaper. Only $130 on Amazon. This version is $134. Not my cup of tea but I think it's a great move for Buck. Now all the 420HC haters have to find something else to complain about. I have a 112 my dad bought for me 20 years ago. I haven't babied it and it's held up fine and the brass has a cool patina. I'm not really into the hollow grind and the heavy handle. I have other knives but that will still always be the one my dad gave me.

AS an older knife collector who owns and does occasionally carry buck folders, I've come to the conclusion over the years that people who buy/carry/use the older design buck folders are either 1. Very old, and just don't care about modern features. The 110/112 has always worked, why change it. Also, older people tend to have much stronger brand loyalties than younger people (I would even argue that brand loyalty just isn't a thing anymore). Or... 2. They just happen to really like Buck knives (and honestly, there's a lot to like about the company, especially if you care about American Made) and carry them despite (but are aware of), the flaws.
@thaknobodi

I would carry one if it was mid lock. As they are, its a bit of a stretch to disengage it way at the end of the handle, and makes it MORE obvious you have a knife around others when it takes an extra second to close it.

I find the buck 112s blade to be perfect to skin large game with. I don’t consider it a fighting knife. You can very well use it for fighting but there are much better options. You are 100 percent right. The thumb studs are in the way. That’s why I went all the way with my last 112 purchase and bought an automatic. They are legal in my state they feature every thing I like in the old school 112 with the convenience of automatic opening. Yes I have helped skin over a dozen different types of critters from deer and elk to squirrels with a switch blade.
@bushleague3472
10 ай бұрын
I agree, between the short blade and big handle, the 112 is a near perfect hunting knife. If I found a good deal on a "Sport" I'd probably buy it for the lighter weight and upgraded steel, get rid of the clip/ stud, and carry it on my belt like a regular hunting knife. I think trying to dress it up as anything else is a mistake, a 112 only becomes beautiful when it gets bloody.

I was about to buy that Buck 110 Slim Pro TRX in Titanium and S45VN. But when I saw that Buck didn't even bother to mill a spot for the pocket clip I was out. If I'm gonna pay almost $500, they need to show that they care just a little bit. Maybe I pick one up on a sale if they don't all sell out, or second hand.
@Im_With_Stupid

It has a reversible clip. If they milled it then you'd have a big scooped out spot on one side of your knife, just sitting there useless and looking like crap.
@Cid_1
Жыл бұрын
@@Im_With_Stupid For that price they could have made a filler tab. A much better solution than having a lazy clip slapped on the scale like they don't even care. And for $500 that's the very least they could do. It looks more like crap with a cheap clip just slapped on the scale. Considering they are in the price territory of an Arno Bernard, a small Sebenza, and a lot of other super nice choices.

Personally I like stubby blades for EDC but the way you use your knives its understandable why you don't like the 112. I low key hate my 112 slim. It's not a bad knife but it does all the things I want just good enough. Handle and blade size are both good. Lock mechanism is super tough. Cleaning and maintenance takes some getting use to but it's possible. And the steel well it's buck 420. If someone makes a Buck like knife with slightly better steel and a flat ground blade I would be happy. I know I kind of described an opinel but I want something more modern and durable.
