Hello friends! Welcome to our KZitem channel, Buddha Vibes. Today, we bring you an exciting and educational story that mirrors the situations many people face even today. Through this fascinating tale, you'll understand that using unjust means to achieve anything or to succeed is never beneficial, but rather leads to one's downfall.
While residing in Jetavana Monastery, Lord Buddha once told a monk, “It is not only in this life that you refuse to follow good advice. In a past life as well, you had the same disposition, which caused you to lose your life and led to the deaths of a thousand others.” Upon the monk's curiosity, Buddha narrated the story of his past life.
In ancient times, there lived a Brahmin in Kashi who had mastered a special incantation that could cause a shower of jewels from the sky at an auspicious planetary conjunction. At that time, Bodhisattva was his disciple. One day, the Brahmin and his disciple were traveling through a dense forest when they were surrounded by five hundred robbers. These robbers did not kill but captured people and released them upon receiving a ransom. They captured the Brahmin and sent the disciple to fetch money. The disciple reassured his master, “Do not worry, Gurudev! I will return quickly with the ransom and free you.”
After the disciple left, the Brahmin realized that the planetary conjunction for the jewel shower was that very day. He thought, “Why not satisfy these robbers with a shower of jewels and free myself?” He asked the robbers to untie him and promised them a vast treasure. The robbers, following his orders, bathed him, anointed him with fragrant substances, and adorned him with flower garlands. As the Brahmin recited the incantation, a golden cloud appeared, and jewels began to rain down. The robbers collected the wealth and, after apologizing, honored the Brahmin greatly. Then they moved on.
However, they soon encountered another group of robbers who captured them. When asked why they were captured, the robbers explained that they wanted wealth. The first group of robbers revealed that the Brahmin with them could make jewels rain from the sky, and he had given them the wealth. When the second group demanded the same, the Brahmin explained that the shower of jewels could only occur at a specific conjunction, requiring them to wait a year. Enraged, the robbers accused him of deceit and killed him. Subsequently, a fierce battle ensued between the two groups of robbers, leading to the death of the first group. The remaining robbers took the treasure and went deeper into the forest. Eventually, they fought over the division of the wealth, resulting in a bloody conflict where only two survived.
These two robbers buried the treasure by a pond. One guarded it with a sword while the other cooked rice, both plotting to kill each other to keep all the wealth. The one cooking poisoned the rice, and upon returning, the other killed him with a sword. The remaining robber, hungry, ate the poisoned rice and died.
When the Bodhisattva disciple returned with the ransom, he found only heaps of corpses in the forest. Through this tale, Buddha conveyed that seeking wealth through unjust means leads to destruction, as demonstrated by the greedy robbers' story.
The moral of the story is that when we are driven by greed and use unjust means to acquire wealth, we ultimately harm ourselves.
