I think it looks a lot worse because of the primitive technology compared to modern stuff, a base model Camry could probably go through this course without breaking a sweat lol
@05gtdriver

@@exxusdrugstore300 It wasn't primitive technology at the time... I'm sure in 50 years time, everything we do and have today will be considered totally ancient! As to the OP's question, take ABS out of a modern vehicle and you'll see the tires smoke badly on a hard, full-on braking stop, also a dusty track surface adds to the drama!
@exxusdrugstore300

@@05gtdriver No doubt about the progress we have made and will make, I guess I should have said it looks like this car is being pushed to it's limits because it IS at it's absolute limits. You can only do so much with leaf springs and bias plys. That being said, I think Lindemann and his drivers really liked to put on a show for his viewers lol.

2 barrel 351 Clevelands were good runners especially in 1970 when even the stock cams were decent. The problem is they ran out of carburetor above 4000 rpm. You could kick a few asses with them in stoplight racing though.
@scottcarlson6246
7 жыл бұрын
Motorcraft 2150 2 barrel carburetors weren't the worst performing 2 barrel carburetors out there. They were pretty damn good actually under 3500 to 4000 rpm. The "1.08" and the "1.14" ones were usually on the 302 2V engines (287/300 CFM) and the car in this video would have had either the 1.21 (351 CFM) or the 1.23 (356 CFM) 2 barrel on that 351 Cleveland. It's all about port velocity and 2 barrel engines dig in really well in the low end even if they fall flat on their face in the top end.

Funny; I had a 1971 Ford Torino 351-2V and it was a runner up to about 65-70 mph. The only mod to the car were dual exhausts.

I had a 351 Cleveland 2V in a '73 Mach 1. It was pretty swift on the street - good acceleration. Fuel economy wasn't a problem when gas was around 43 cents/gallon (13 highway - about 9 in town).

0-60 in 9.2 for a 351 2bbl not bad at all. Must have had 3.50 axle for good power off the line. Perhaps most 'phallic' grille in supercar history.

Not too shabby considering this car would have had single exhaust and the same lousy cast iron exhaust manifolds as Grandmom's station wagon. I thought the 0-30 time of 2.9 seconds was even more impressive. "Phallic" grill. LOL. I think you could easily mistake this car for a late 60's Oldsmobile or other midsize GM car from the Late 1960s. This is the most GM looking Ford I've ever seen.

Pretty good screamer for a 2 barrel small block, powering a 3500+ lb car. The 4 barrel 429 SCJ version would kick some serious @$$ on the track back in the day. This one is a 1971, as revealed by by the "GT" letter in the center gun-sight grill. The 1970 did not have the letter in the gun-sight. The Cyclone had beautiful styling.

Actually, tires were more expensive then, when you consider inflation and how much better they are now. Besides, manufacturers have always let journalists burn up tires, especially when you consider the film footage needed for a national TV show like that. Replacing tires was just part of their public relations budget, and still is.
